Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

A Helpful Template

December 10th, 2010 @ 6:17 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

I got my issue of Brides magazine in the mail today, and for once I found something really useful in it! I’m not sure how I even got a subscription to it, but I have one and I’ve found that it (along with most wedding magazines) tends to have the same articles every month, just written slightly differently. It’s probably much more useful if you’re newly engaged, but for someone like me who has been engaged for what feels like FOREVER it’s definitely less than helpful.

Anyways, I was flipping through it and I saw an article that I was actually really excited about! I immediately ripped the page out so I could save it, and I thought y’all might appreciate how helpful it is.

What’s the article about?

A Helpful Template : wedding etiquette thank you Thank Y

(Source)

Thank you notes! The article has a few tips for writing thank you notes, as well as a really great template to use!

Now, normally I’m not a big fan of templates for something like a thank you card. However, in some situations I think it can be helpful.

For instance, FMIL Cardy recently threw me a small shower with some of her friends and co-workers, most of whom I didn’t know or had only met briefly. I don’t know about you, but I find it really hard to write a great, personal thank you note to someone I don’t even know! This template will come in VERY handy when I’m writing those thank you notes this week!

So, here it is! It’s from the January issue of Brides magazine. It’s kind of a Mad-Libs style template, with several suggestions for the wording where you can choose what fits best. The part in italics are the suggestions, and you’re supposed to choose just one, not use ‘em all. :)

“Dear ____ (giver’s name),

Thank you so much for the (gorgeous, stylish, super-useful, classic, unique, stunning) _______ (type of gift).

(It rocks!, We were thrilled to get it!, We simply adore it!)

___________(name of fiance or spouse) and I cannot wait to (start using it, show it off in our home, enjoy it together) - we will think of you every time we see it.

Looking forward to (seeing you, meeting you, catching up, chatting with you) (at the wedding, after the honeymoon, at work, in the neighborhood, soon, during the holidays).

(Love, Best, Sincerely, Cheers!, Fondly)

________ (your name)”

It’s great, right? It’s not absolutely perfect for every situation, but I think it’s going to make thank you note writing a lot easier for me!

Did you have a hard time wording your thank you notes? What helpful tips can you lend to the hive?

Perfect! This is basically the template I used for all our thank yous too. Makes writing them easy peasy.

Our invitation lady told us last weekend that she had a groom come in once who wanted thank you notes printed that way. So he could just fill in the blanks.

@tarabonistall: that is hysterical! I didn’t use a template, had I known there was one out there I totally would have used it :)

That is awesome! I looked for something similar on the internet when writing our Thank You Notes but didn’t find anything that good. I still wasn’t very good at being particularly personal because I’m not a mushy, touchy-feely person and I got exhausted doing it.

At least you plan on writing them. I recently spoke to a bride who got married three weeks before I did. I hadn’t realized she didn’t send thank you notes until she brought it up. Now that it’s been six months, she’s just not going to do it at all. I think she still could but she couldn’t be talked into it.

I totally used a template when I got stuck, and I also got stuck when it was for people I didn’t know well. Mine was pretty similar.

We definitely had a formula to our thank you cards, there were so many to write! Although, funny story, we had an assembly line going and apparently a few of them missed me because we got reports of some of the cards reading “Mr. G and ” Doh!

@girlygirlqc: I second this question. Any good wording for gifts if cash or giftcards?

@piesky: Dear X, thank you so much for your generous gift. It will really help us as we begin our new life together. We were so glad to have you join us at the shower/wedding, and we look forward to seeing you again soon…

You can polish it up a bit, but that’s gist of it for cash gifts, I think.

@girlygirlqc: @piesky: We haven’t received many cash gifts yet, but when we do, I’ve basically said “thank you for the generous gift/gift card” and let them know what we’ll be doing with it. For example, Mr. Cardy and I have decided to put all of the wedding money we receive towards a downpayment on a home, so I write that in the thank you note. I don’t know if that’s the “right” way to do it, but I figure our guests might like to know what their gift is going towards! Hope that helps! :)

This is so helpful, thank you Miss Cardigan!

One word about the mystery magazine subscription: You can log on the mag’s website and see who paid for it. If it’s some sort of marketing company, their (the marketing company’s goal) is to get you to contact them so they can get even more details about you — email, phone number, etc.
I recently began receiving InStyle randomly. I looked into it and found it to be the above situation, but I will keep getting it (for free, of course) because you HAVE to input all that info and more just to send the marketing company an email.

Another possibly helpful tip - I was the person assigned to keep a list at a shower of all the gifts received, and everytime the bride opened something, I wrote an adjective down as well. Usually it was something she or the other guests had said, but if I was at a loss, I’d just make something up. Then when writing the notes, she already had “lovely lamp” and “exotic serving bowl” written down.

@Coffeecake: That is so interesting because I recently started getting inStyle and could not figure out why!

Great tips Miss Cardigan! I was just reading that issue on the plane and marked that page.
