The Great Glasses Debate

December 11th, 2010 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Waffle

I don’t just like my glasses. I love my glasses!

The Great Glasses Debate : wedding austin beauty Waffle1 waffle1

At first when I chose to wear glasses over contacts, I had a hard time struggling with the whole vanity issue.

That was a time when I was a less confident lady. My allergies were soooooo freakin’ bad when I moved to Austin that contacts just weren’t an option for about nine months out of the year. Glasses it was.

Four years ago, I found the frames I currently wear. They are a slight cat-eye shape with rhinestones in the corners, and they are so me. So much me that when I accidentally placed them down in a tealight on my bedside table and set them on fire, I cried like a big baby for a few hours. It took me forever to track down the exact frames and get them replaced.

The Great Glasses Debate : wedding austin beauty N125044

They have become such a part of my identity and, oddly, my personality, too. When I asked Mr. Waffle if I should or should not wear my glasses for the wedding, he said, “You wouldn’t look like you.” He loves the glasses, too.

Mama Waffle, on the other hand, seems to think I look better without them. Her argument is basically that a beautiful girl like me shouldn’t be hiding behind her glasses on her wedding day…that they will take away from the moment.

Part of me can see this. Part of me wants to be that stunning, radiant lady in the glamorous dress sans glasses. Am I using the glasses as a security blanket? Do I just feel “safe” in them? I would still be me without them. Right? It’s a funny thing, but this is a tough decision. If I don’t wear them, I won’t be able to see anything and will surely end up going ass over teakettle while walking down the aisle. If I wear contacts, I’ll be going nutso with all the blinking, itching, and possible crying. If I wear them, I kind of lose the beautiful goddess effect.

Pretty soon, I’m going to need to get a new prescription, and I would love to just replace the lenses in these frames. While they are at the glasses hospital, I plan to try out a pair of contacts…just to try (for Mama Waffle). This will hopefully help bring me some clarity to the whole situation.

Are any of you glasses-wearin’ gals wrestling with the same dilemma?

I have HORRIBLE allergies year round (thanks so cal!)- i take 2 diff meds every niight and i still have problems- its that bad. It took a lot of different contacts tries to find the ones I am comfortable in. They still get bothersome when i stare at a computer all day, but rewetting drops work. And eye allergy drops also help. But there are contacts out there that you will find comfortable in. You just may habe to go through a crap load of trial and error

I’ve seen brides wear glasses on their big day and it looked great. So I’m sure you will look gorgeous either way! Maybe you could compromise and wear contacts during the ceremony, and then wear your glasses during the reception so you can have two different looks. I think what matters most is your comfort and how you want to look on your wedding day.

p.s.- I love that book!

You accidentally set your glasses on fire?! Awesome :) And yes I have definitely had this dilemma as well. It looks like I will end up with contacts on the day but after the wedding I think Im going to just stick to glasses- so much simpler and less terrifying than contacts!

That is a tough call since obviously you want to look like “you” on your wedding day and clearly your glasses are a big part of that but on the other hand, they do cover a part of your face…Hmmm, tough call! I think trying out the contacts is a good idea, you could always wear contacts for the ceremony/pictures part then throw on the glasses for the partying/dancing part!

Good for you for being so confident! I am SO self-conscious about my glasses. But if you rock ‘em and you know it…go for it!

I think you should wear them, since you’ll be more comfortable and feel more like yourself. But during your formals, you could always take them off for a few shots, just so you have both looks. And if your mother wants one of those pictures, then fine.

You look beautiful with your glasses and I agree, they’re part of you.

Mr. Oyster is also a glasses-wearer and we got him a new pair before the wedding. Just make sure to get anti-glare frames if you can–it keeps the camera from reflecting on the lenses! These worked wonderfully for him, you can see his eyes so clearly in every shot! :)

If you wear your glasses all the time and they are “you”, I think you should wear them at the wedding. You could always take them off for some of the portrait shots to appease your mom.

I think you can do both looks and be okay, but I will say that as a photographer I’ve taken pictures of several clients with glasses, and sometimes it’s hard to be watching for a glare in every picture. It’s something few people think about but if your photographer is going to use a lot of flash, you may want to consider not wearing them during portraits or something because it’s hard to control glass glare.

Good luck! :)

I am so glad I read this! I thought I was the only person in the world who had accidentally set her own glasses on fire. I had a candle on my bedside table, wasn’t looking and put my glasses on top of it. As me and SO are lying in bed, all of a sudden we see this plume of black smoke floating up to the ceiling. 8 years have passes and he still teases me about it!

I am a big glasses wearer too, and I struggled with the same dilemma. I wrote a post about it, too. Basically, I decided not to wear them because I wanted to be able to kiss Mr. Jelly with reckless abandon without worrying about getting oil smudges on my glasses (this happens every time we kiss). Also, I was worried about a glare in photos. But lots of brides have worn glasses and pulled it off, so if you and Mr. Waffles like it, then go for it!

Oh man, I am having the same dilemma! I love my glasses. I’ve had the same frames for 7 (!) years. I even kept them a few years ago when I needed to get my prescription upgraded, and just got new lenses for them.

But…I usually take them off for pictures, for some reason. However, wearing contacts often makes my eyes itchy/red and heightens the giant rings of darkness that are under my eyes. So I don’t know what I should for the wedding. Let us know what you decide!

I’ve had glasses since I was 11. I’m now 29. I am going through the same thing in regards to deciding whether or not to get contacts for the wedding. Here’s the thing - I can’t really wear contacts b/c I have sensitive eyes. I’ve tried them before. And my fiance says the same thing: your glasses are you. So I will be proudly wearing them for the wedding. In fact, I might get a new fabulous pair with the anti-glare that are a little fancier than my black and purple plastic frames. Every photographer I’ve interviewed has stated that people with glasses aren’t a problem for photos. They know how to bounce the flash so it isn’t aimed directly at your glasses.

I wear glasses 99% of the time in my daily life (and have for 16 years) but I will SO be wearing contacts the day of.

I’d wear your glasses if you feel that strongly about it, and to appease Mama W, perhaps take them off in a few pictures when you have your formals? :)

You need to look up Mrs. Gummy Bears’ wedding. She totally rocked her glasses, and looked absolutely gorgeous and bridal. I think you’ll look amazing in them!

I have not spent a day without my glasses since I was 6, and I wasn’t going without them at my wedding! My glasses are so a part of me that most people even forget that I wear them until I take them off for a moment to clean them! You rock ‘em at your wedding girl!

My glasses are also a huge part of my identity, but I’ve decided to go sans spectacles. Glasses definitely hide my eyes, then there’s the glare, practicality (smudges from all those hugs and kisses)… The plan is to wear my contacts more frequently in the months leading up to the wedding so my eyes get more “practice”.

I say do what you want to do. But if your not sure you could always go without them for the ceremony and wear them for the reception.

I am so not showing this post to my fiance, because he already worries about me setting things on fire with the candle on my bedside table.

He also thinks I look sexy in my glasses (and in white), so I’ve been going through this same thought process. (Except I can see pretty well without my prescription so long as I’m not driving, so I don’t have to test out contacts.) I also like how I look in them, but… don’t know yet. I’m guessing I’ll decide after some hair/makeup trials.
