The Immigration…It Never Ends

December 11th, 2010 @ 11:10 am by Mrs. D'orsay

Mr. D and I have been enjoying our temporary break from USCIS paperwork over the past 12 months (with the exception of filling out a painless change of address form). However, since I am an obsessive planner type, I sometimes like to check in and see how everything fits together. So to date, we’ve already spent about $2,000 on immigration (USCIS fees, plus all the traveling to London and extra costs for the fiancé visa medical, etc.) and we’ll have to set aside another $1270 for the next 2 years.

We spent $590 in October for the restrictions on Mr. D’s conditional permanent resident card to be lifted (after you marry you are granted a two-year card, but you have to apply 90 days prior to its expiration). Then we will spend $680 for Mr. D to apply to be a citizen in January 2013.

Then for the UK, we’ll need to set aside £750 (about $1,181 at this moment in time). The process is easier, and less expensive, if we’ve been married for four years prior to moving to England, so August 2013 will mark four years for Mr. D and me. Otherwise we move there and receive a two year provisional stay, and pay again in two years.

I don’t even know how much it will cost me to apply for citizenship there…because at the moment, my brain is fried from immigration/ £/$/citizenship research. We will pay it though, because once we’re citizens of both countries we’ll be able to move back and forth more easily, and I’ll also receive all the EU benefits (let’s move somewhere warm!).

The most bonkers part of this (to me at least) is that in 2013 I’ll be 29, and celebrating my 30th birthday in England. WHERE WILL WE HAVE BABIES?!!?!? {Cue irrational freak out…}

Are you dealing with immigration issues surrounding marriage? How much do you think you’ll have spent when all is said and done?

I totally feel your pain. I haven’t even looked into the details of how marriage will affect my immigration status. I don’t think it will. Thankfully I already have my green card but it’s become more and more of an issue that I am not a citizen of the US. Immigration is such a nightmare. I wish you the best!

Oh yes! We’re currently dealing with getting the ball rolling on all of our green card paperwork for Waffle and are shocked at the rather hefty chunk of change we’re going to have to fork over to the immigration lawyer and US government. He’s also changing jobs at the moment, so that’s another couple thousand just to transfer his visa from one company to another. It’s also super frustrating to fill out the SAME information on fifty different pieces of paper that are essentially going to the same place. Immigration is time consuming and EXPENSIVE!

(sigh) I can’t even tell you how much trouble my family has had going between US/UK…red tape everywhere. One of my aunts came very close to deportation because of some absurd, logistical error. They’ve since moved back to the UK. I know some of it is security measures…before 9/11, my dad could even use his British passport one direction and his US the other and no one minded.

I’m lucky with my dual, but if I stayed in England for too long, the US would for SURE try to make me give one citizenship up. I’m lucky I fell in love with a Yank, I guess ;)

We are only in the beginning stages - already shelled out a pretty nice chunk of change to file for the K-1 visa about two months ago (right BEFORE the fees went down, unfortunately)……and we are still waiting to hear something :( I know we have a long and expensive road ahead…

I love your immigration updates (not so much the stress they cause you) because it reminds me that so many people have to go through this. We have yet to try to get DH any status in the US since we are currently living in Europe. I don’t look forward to the US visa process. It was not so bad for me in Germany, since we’re married, I pretty much have all EU rights bu I can’t vote and have to renew my permission to stay ever 2-3 years for now. Neither of us are planning to apply for the other’s citizenship though because Germany and the US don’t offer dual. Good luck with the visas, hopefully it will get easier.

Oh goody…all the paperwork Mr E and I have to look forward to! Hopefully it will be a tiny bit easier for us in the end because I wont have to apply for my green card until I have been married to Mr E for 2 years. But then again, when is immigration ever easy? We dont know where we will end up having babies either :P Maybe some random country that neither of us are citizens of…

Kudos to you for keeping all of that straight! Luckily we are and plan to remain US citizens. However, we have several friends applying for citizenship right now and it seems like such a nightmare. Gone are the Ellis Island days…my grandma just came over and passed through EI no problem, and when my grandfather came ten years later he just flew over, went through customs, and was done. The good old days…

We actually ended up hiring an immigration lawyer and paid around $4000 which includes all the filing fees. I know this is a lot of money, but we saved up in advance and I am so happy about this. I had so much trouble with my visas before (as in: passport lost in mail while on the way from the embassy to me; employer forgot to sign forms etc etc) that I am just happy that someone takes over and just tells me what formns to fill in and where to sign. Also, they go the interview with you and intervene if the interviewer goes crasy on you.

Just one little clarification: The 2 year conditional green card is only if you’ve been married less than 2 years. I feel for you though. I’ve been married 12 years now and we’ve spent 2 1/2 of those in separate countries. It’s worth it in the end!

After “I Do”: Children | Weddingbee

[...] 31? It will be easier for us to move to England in 2014 (see this post) and I don’t want to have to fill out the paperwork (and pay) for a child to move to England [...]

I was wondering if you know where to find those monkeytail/fiddlehead ferns in an artificial? We can’t find any place to buy them.
thanks,
Nickie
