Choosing my old-new-borrowed-blue items was one of the easiest decisions I made throughout the entire wedding planning process. There were too many new things to count (but I would count my dress), and the old, borrowed, and blue were all rolled up into one beautiful piece of jewelry:

My grandmother’s sapphire ring is one of the few pieces of jewelry that my mother and aunt have of their mother’s.

Both of them love it so equally that every few years the carrier of the ring will wrap it and hide it beneath the Christmas tree for her sister. Every time this happens, it’s one of the most touching moments of the day. I asked my mom if I could wear it on my wedding day, and she agreed.

As Mrs. Octopus recently talked about, when I scratched it from my to-do list, I scratched it from my mind— permanently, until we were getting ready the morning of the wedding. And—shocker—my mom didn’t bring it, because I didn’t think to mention it again since I had first asked a year earlier.

As a reminder, our wedding location was 2.5 hours from our home, and running home to grab it was completely outside the realm of possibility. So, we improvised.

I still had my new. I just happened to be wearing something blue beneath my dress. But the old and borrowed were still up in the air. Everyone began furiously searching their bags for something—anything!—they could lend me that was old. We started to get creative with the word “old” —“I’ve had this powder compact for two years now, will that count?” Until finally, BM-N remembered that she had a few pieces of her grandmother’s jewelry, including her beautiful pearl bracelet that just so happened to match my attire perfectly:

While it wasn’t what I had originally planned to wear, it was the perfect substitute!

Did you have to make any last minute adjustments to your traditions?
