Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

My first experience looking at wedding dresses in the flesh wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped it would be. I was only in Sydney for two weeks, but had one of my bridesmaids in town from inter-state and decided to her  them for a peek inside some bridal stores. Two out of my three bridesmaids came along for the ride.

We started off at a small local store, A Bride’s Blessing. You’d think we would have been put off by its slightly cheesy name, but no; it was close by, so we decided to take a peek inside. The girls flicked through the racks of bridesmaids dresses, keeping an eye out on any styles that took their fancy and  for either green or grey shades that looked promising. I wandered over to the bridal gown section to flick through, but wasn’t that impressed; most gowns looked like they were in tattered condition (even for floor-dresses) and the  selection of gowns were all NOT what I was after. The girls found a few styles that they liked, like this Alfred Angelo number.

Afterwards we moved on to another store, Sweethearts Bridal. This store looked much nicer, cleaner and more relaxed, except for one thing: it had pushy staff. We walked in the door, making a beeline for the bridesmaids’ and formal wear selection, but were still instantly hounded by a saleslady asking who the bride was.

I should have prefaced this post by admitting that I was definitely not looking for my dress that day—I was hot, grumpy, slightly jet-lagged and wearing completely inappropriate underwear to try on formal wear. Unfortunately, the woman chose to ignore all of my protests and went about selecting a handful of gowns that she thought I’d like. Now’s about the time that you have to picture me literally being herded into a changing room by a teeny tiny saleslady, while my girls watched on with their mouths hanging open. It was not really the bridal fitting session I had planned out in my mind, but off we went.

Here’s the thing I noticed pretty quickly during this experience: the choice of gowns for plus-sized brides was very limited. I wasn’t expecting to be able to try on everything in the store; geez, I wasn’t even really wanting to look! But when every single dress she brought over was strapless and A-line, I got frustrated pretty quickly. They wouldn’t allow me to take photographs, but this was the dress that looked the least horrific on my body that day, even though it was strapless. This is ‘Lillian’ by Maggie Sottero.

The dress was beautiful, but honestly? The saleslady was so pushy about it that it completely turned me off the dress at all. It wasn’t anything like what I’d told her I was looking for, but it was one of the few size 18 dresses that fit me, so I think she was just working with what she had and really pushing for me to make her a sale. That’s fine, but it wasn’t the one—there was no magic for me. I left the store soon after that, wondering if this was how all wedding dress experiences were supposed to go, and feeling more than a little nervous about how I was going to find my perfect gown.

Plus sized brides: are you/were you nervous about finding gowns in your size at bridal salons? How are you preparing for the experience?

I went with my fiancee’s mom, and I strictly said that I was just going to try silhouttes to see what fit my body best. However, fate took its course and I actually found a dress of the rack. It was little disturbing how small fitting they are..so imagine my surprise that in wearing a street 18, I had to get a size 24.. *gasp*. I picked out the dresses I wanted to try, I believe I picked 5. Tried on 3, because the other 2 I realized were too low cut. Anyhow, what I found is that you have to be realistic. I wanted the whole roushing gown with long train..my oh my is it HEAVY! Looked great, but so uncomfortable! The dress I got accents my curves, has a train, and is light as can be..and I LOVE IT! Don’t let someone pressure you…you make the day of picking out your dress how you want it! Don’t let size detour you! At all!

Pushy sales people was a big turn off for me during the dress shopping experience! I was pretty nervous about going to stores with a decent amount of plus size dresses, so I called ahead to get an idea of the store’s size selection.

I went dress shopping once at a store outside of Boston. I made an appointment and brought my soon to be sister in law, mother in law and auntie in law. The saleslady asked me my name about 100 times (and kept forgetting it), never asked me what I liked and told everyone that I was with that we cannot pull a dress off the rack unless it fit me.

She proceeded to pull all of the size 18 gowns into the fitting room - no matter what they looked like - just because they would fit me. I am a street size 14 - it is not like I am huge or anything. But every.single.one of those dresses was hideous and my #1 dislike? Satin. Guess what each one of those dresses was made of? I was so frustrated - and felt ugly and fat and just horrible that I almost started crying. Thank goodness my soon to be sis in law has some huge coconuts and asked for the manager or store owner, and proceeded to tell the store owner what a horrible experience we had and we all stormed out of the store.
I hope that sales lady got in trouble - she was horrible! I couldn’t go looking at dresses again for 2 months after that….

A million times yes on the dress shopping anxiety, and I’m not even quite plus sized at a street size 12. I put off dress shopping for almost 5 months of my 11 month engagement. My big concern: that the dresses wouldn’t go up over my ample booty. And you know what? A lot of them didn’t. But many of them did! Yes, the sample size 10’s had to be clamped. And yes, there were a few dresses I couldn’t try on because they were sample size 8’s. And I had one smug sales lady try to sell me on a sample size 18 that wasn’t my style but because it actually zipped looked better than a lot of the 10’s.

A few words of advice for other more voluptuous ladies who fall between the regular and the plus sizes in wedding dress land:
- David’s Bridal is a great place to go to get a sense of silhouettes, as they have a wider range of sizes than most shops.
-Tell the ladies on the phone what size you are when you book your appointment and ask what percentage of their dresses you’ll be able to try on.
-Priscilla of Boston had- by far- the smallest samples of anywhere I looked. Including Vera Wang, whose sample 10s ALL went over my hips no problem.
-Side zip dresses are harder to try on than back ones
-Flowy chiffon dresses are the easiest to get on
-Book a low-pressure appointment with a friend or relative you trust before you officially start the hunt, to help get some of the body issues out of the way
-Even when things don’t zip and are clamped and such, you’ll still look BEAUTIFUL

I have the opposite problem. I’m pretty small, and even though I’ve ordered my dress and tried on over 200 dresses, I have still NEVER tried on a dress that fit me. I mean, I know there’s not a lot of brides out there my size, but I really wish stores would have a larger and a smaller size of every dress so that they could help everyone who is not a size 8 - 14.
