Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

After walking down the aisle with Papa Hot Wings, we ended up next to Mr Hot Wings. Papa hugged me and shook Mr Hot Wings’ hand. I’ve written out our ceremony for you below.

Welcome, family, friends, and loved ones. You have been invited here this afternoon to share in the celebration of Mr and Miss Hot Wings’ marriage. This ceremony has two purposes.

First, by stating their vows to one another in the presence of friends and family, Mr and Miss Hot Wings have chosen to share their promises to one another with you. You are their community—the people who have played an important role in their lives, and the people who they hope will be a part of their lives in the years to come. Today, we honor them by sharing in their public expression of their commitment to one another. Your presence here today shows your love for Mr and Miss Hot Wings and your support of their decision to marry.

Second, participation in this ceremony serves a legal purpose. When this ceremony concludes and the marriage license has been signed, Mr and Miss Hot Wings will have satisfied the legal requirements of the State of California for two people to marry one another. Mr and Miss Hot Wings would like their guests to be mindful of the fact that as recently as 1967, it was not legal for Asian Americans and Whites to marry in some parts of the United States. They are grateful that this time in our country’s history is behind us and that today they have the legal right to wed one another. They remain hopeful that one day all citizens of this country will enjoy this same legal right regardless of their sexual orientation.

Mr and Miss Hot Wings, please take a moment to turn and look upon the faces of the friends and family who have gathered here to spend this day with you.

This group of loved ones may never be all together in the same place again. Many have traveled great distances for the sole purpose of being here today to witness your union. Take some time to think about how they have touched your lives, and appreciate that they are here with you today.

As you acknowledge those gathered here today, let us also take a moment to remember those that could not be with us. Even though they are not present in body, we know that they are present in spirit and send you their blessings.

Acknowledging the people who make up our “community” and taking the moments to turn around and look at all of them was really important to me. It really slowed down the ceremony for me and allowed me to take a nice long mental snapshot of everyone who attended. I remember thinking, “they’re all smizing at me!” I can still remember where people sat at our wedding because I had those moments built into the ceremony. I seriously had to hold myself back from pointing and pulling on Mr Hot Wings’ arm while saying, “Oo Oo, so and so is here!” I highly recommend this.

Are you taking a moment to take your mental snapshot or to acknowledge your community?

*All photos by the ever fab Hanssie Trainor unless noted otherwise*

Do you need to catch up with the hotness?

We did exactly what you did! I love the pictures of us looking at our guests and them looking back. That was one of my favorite parts of the ceremony because it made me realize - all of these people are here because they love us and support us!

PS - your guests took some damn good photos!

Gorgeous pictures! Also, I had no idea it was illegal for Asians and Whites to marry in some parts of the States as late as 1967!

I love your moment of acknowledgement. We have incorporated that into our DIY ceremony as well. I think it we be a great moment for us to reflect on all of the love that surround us.

I love this - both the recognition of the legality and that not everyone has that right, and the recognition of your own community there to support you. Absolutely beautiful.

What a gorgeous ceremony, and I agree with the PPs — I love that you included a statement about marriage equality. And the guest acknowledgement is such a great idea — totally writing that down!

You’re all so sweet. I’m blushing. I’m really honored anyone would want to use anything we did! Take it! Feel free to take it. I’m flattered.

Thanks so much for this post, Mrs. Hot Wings!! I think I’ll take my case to the Mister, and ask him if he would like to do the same (acknowledge the guests).

P.S. You are gorgeous!!
