Mrs. Jam's Picture
Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

This is a little note to the gals nearest and dearest to our hearts: Our five bridesmaids. God love them.

You know, when Mr. Jam and I started wedding planning, he only really wanted one thing: A wedding party. And I wanted nothing to do with one thing: A wedding party.

We quickly learned the meaning of compromise because one can only threaten to call off a wedding so many times before it gets a little tiring. And yes, we decided to have a wedding party. And YES, I’m actually so excited about it now I want to scream in their faces every second.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam1 jam1

I even made each gal a card with a flower on the front that can double as a hair clip. Because, you know, I’m pretty obsessed with them myself. The cards turned out a little wonky, and I’m sure I could have ordered sweet little cards on Etsy, but I think the Jam ’maids liked the handmade touch. Actually, I don’t remember because we were too busy screaming and freaking out to even talk about them.

The only thing I really wanted for our wedding party (for both the guys and the gals) was that they each dress in what they what they’re comfortable wearing. Mr. Jam is dealing with the guys because that’s his thing. BUT we’re making each gal pick out a bridesmaids’ dress in a color within the beige-champagne-tan color family that she would totally want to wear again in whatever price range she wants.

But, but, but…there are just a few rules:

1) Dresses have to be short without being hoochie-mama short;

2) I despise the tugging that often goes with a strapless dress, so I would prefer they have some sort of strappage;

3) Nothing too fancy because it’s a more casual wedding. Seriously, I wouldn’t be shocked (or mad) if some old man showed up in jeans.

And just to prove that the rules can be followed and our bridesmaids will all look as fabulous as they are (straight-up divas, I tell ya), here are some ideas to get the wheels turning:

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam2 jam2

Cutie-cute-cute and on sale for $19.99!

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam3 jam3

I love this! I want to wear this! It’s just $23.99!

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam4 jam4

CHEAPY-CHEAP with the one-shouldered ruffle at just $13.69; it’s so cheap, how could you NOT at least try it?!

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam56 jam56

You could totes wear these again, and I’m even digging that little beige and white print. Each $75 here.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam7 jam7

I am dying to dress this up; it’s seriously screaming “JAM BRIDESMAID” for just $58.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam8 jam8

PRESH and totally re-wearable, on sale at J.Crew for $99.99.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam9 jam9

This crinkled chiffon dress is pretty darn cute, and GASP! It’s from David’s Bridal for $120.

Actually, I’ll be happy with whatever the ladies wear, just as long as they’re comfortable gettin’ down on the dance floor…and NOT wearing these:

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam10 jam10

Oh, it’s Gaultier? Yeah, no.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam11 jam11

I know you love Jersey Shore, but do you really want to look like JWoww? Let me answer that for you…NO.

To My Dearest, Darling-est Bridesmaids (Whom I Lurve) : wedding bridesmaid dress chicago Jam

…but I dare you to look as cute as this bb.

I could seriously go on a neutral-champagne-tan dress hunt forever. So what do we think? Are we digging this? Did you let your bridesmaids choose their own wedding-day frocks? Was it a total disaster and you barely escaped with your life?

And bonus question: What sorts of things did you do to make sure your wedding party was comfortable…or was that not an issue?

I’m doing the same thing. I gave my gals a color and let them pick whatever suited them best. I’ve seen all their choices and they look fantastic. Guess we’ll see the final product at the wedding next summer! :)

My girls wore the Davids dress you noted and raved on how comfy they were, especially since it was a sweltering June day in Southern Missouri! It is also a really ‘fun’ dress…really flouncy and they looked super sassy. ;)

Unless all of your BMs are stick-thin, I don’t think those baggy shirt-like dresses will look good on all body types. They are too trendy for my taste. Stick with the J-Crew dress. That’s very classy.

@amariem25: I’ve got 5 BMs with 5 completely different body types. Whether they choose something loose or fitted is completely up to them…I just want everyone to be comfortable :)

We all went to the J Crew bridal boutique in NYC, I picked out the color, and I said choose whatever style you want. They loved it! It really was important to me that they have a dress that was well made, and that they loved enough to wear again and that they were comfortable in. I told them that if they couldn’t find one that they liked, they could go elsewhere to find one in a similar color and it would be fiiiine. They all chose J Crew anyway hah!

@Miss Panther: Gah, no need to be jealous. I just faked knowing pretty, scripty writing to save a few bucks ; )

I really admire you for letting them have so much freedom. In my ideal world, I would, but I have these nightmare images of the dresses totally not meshing well. I’ll let you know what I decide to do…thanks for sharing regardless. :)

Love in the neutral tones of these and the flowy romanticism. My wedding dress was so tight and I had to keep pulling it up - so irritating!

Ooh, gorgeous choices! I was all up for letting my girls choose their own dresses. I mean c’mon, we had a 2 yr. engagement. Cut to 6 weeks to wedding and only 1 of 4 had her dress. Have a back up plan sister! I ended up magically finding 2 matching (for sisters) on sale at bcbg for 89 each and my final, clothes-horse bridesmaid went shopping at the last minute and found a perfect dress for 150 and texted me a photo AFTER she bought it.

Keep something in your back pocket just in case :)

I am LOVING the neutral tones - and what beautiful choices - at fantastic prices you found!

I did something kinda similar with my bridesmaids. We went shopping together to try some dresses on. I ended up loving crinkle chiffon fabric and wanted something in purple. I ultimately chose WTOO crinkle chiffon fabric in Plum. The girls ended up having like 15 dresses to choose from and each one chose a different style! I am also letting them choose their own shoes and jewelry! I really wanted them to be comfortable!

A little late to the party…but I just bought the J.Crew dress for my rehearsal dress. They are having a 30% off final sales (which this dress is part of) so you can get the dress for $35! I just wanted to pass this info along to anyone who might be interested (including your bridesmaids:)
