Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!
About Mrs. Pancakes

Around this time each year I watch a lot of wedding movies. I think they provide perfect background noise when studying for exams.

These are my top five favorites:

5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

This movie makes the list primarily because I love the cultural interactions. I also love Aidan. I was pretty mad when Carrie cheated on him with Mr. Big (hahaha).

4. Wedding Crashers

Although I love the first half of the movie, I think once they leave the house the movie really goes downhill. Once Will Ferrell enters the movie I think it becomes unwatchable…no offense. Regardless, I think the first half alone makes it totally worth watching.

3. My Best Friend’s Wedding

I went to see this movie on my 13th birthday with four of my best friends at this awesome movie theater in Singapore. Even after all those years, I still love it, but it’s a little hard to watch now because Kimmie is a 20-year-old college sophomore! Every time I watch it I find this fact more and more disturbing. At one point she contemplates dropping out of college to follow her husband! WHAT!?! (No offense to all the young brides out there!)

2. Bride Wars

When I finally narrowed things down to my final two dresses, I named them Kate and Anne. I adore this movie. I love Kate Hudson and have a soft spot for Anne Hathaway. I think these brides-to-be are hilariously neurotic. Not to mention one is a lawyer (like me, sort of) and the other is a teacher (like my MOH, sort of). That being said, I haven’t watched this movie since getting engaged, so my opinion may change…

1. Father of the Bride

I adoooore this movie! I love watching this movie partly because I am a Daddy’s girl and partly because it focuses solely on the period between the engagement and the wedding.

Some other great (and not-so-great) wedding movies that I love to watch:

  1. Wedding Daze
  2. The Wedding Planner
  3. Made of Honor
  4. The Wedding Date
  5. The Wedding Singer
  6. Our Family Wedding
  7. Runaway Bride
  8. Monster-in-Law
  9. The Bachelor
  10. 27 Dresses

What am I missing? What wedding movies do you love?

What about Mamma Mia?
I wanted a wedding film to play whilst me and my maids are getting ready and this was the only one I can think of which doesn’t have any sad bits to it.
Plus, I can dance and sing along like a madwoman!

I really enjoyed I Love You Man…it def offered a new twist on the wedding movie genre. I also love Father of the Bride because I too was a daddy’s girl once upon a time and I remember watching the heck out of that VHS when we first got it.

How did I not realize that Kimmie was a sophomore in college? I knew she was young but assumed she was finishing school maybe because Cameron Diaz does not look like she could be of college age in that movie?

I never realized how completely over the top most weddings in movies are until I watched some wedding movies after becoming engaged. In Father of the Bride, he says that the wedding costs more than their house! Steel Magnolias is definitely my favorite wedding movie because the wedding is realistic and I like that it goes on to show their newly married life too.

I love Big Fat Greek Wedding! Haven’t watched it in a while, but it may be hitting my dvd player this weekend. :)

I may be showing my age here (and I am shocked no one else mentioned it) but if you have not seen Four Weddings and a Funeral you MUST see it now. The best wedding (plus) film ever.

AGREED!!! FOTB is the best wedding movie ever :) although i watched for the first time in a LONG time recently and it made me cringe a bit as to how insensitive the girls were to poor dad’s money worries. and then he actually felt bad for his “measly” gift of a cappuccino maker when the groom’s parents gave them a car?? he was giving them a WEDDING, for christ’s sake! i still love it, it still holds all the nostalgia from watching it as a girl and is super funny, but i thought that stuff was kinda off.

I know this is a little off-beat, but I love The Hangover and would class it as a wedding movie :)

@Kemi82JP: I was just watching FOTB this weekend and I realized that his 300 person wedding was $75,000 ($250/head). I couldn’t help but wonder if that was a little low… they had swans, re-planted the front yard, added skylights to the house… Maybe I am not accounting for inflation.

I love FOTB. It was the movie I watched before I got married. I still love watching it. My close second is the Wedding Singer because its the first movie my husband and I went to see when we started dating.

Father of the Bride is my all time favorite. I love both the old and new version. And I know it isn’t exactly a wedding movie, but the wedding scene in love actually gives me goosebumps!

I watched Father of the Bride A LOT before I got married, usually when I was home alone on Saturday nights doing DIY projects :)

Not only did I love her OH SO 90’s dress, I thought it was really fun to calculate the cost of that wedding (at some point they give the price per guest as well as the head count)…it was a crazy expensive wedding! At their house no less. Since I watched that as a kid, it was fun to see the movie from the bride/budget perspective :)

Father of the Bride is one of my all time favorites! Especially the original with Elizabeth Taylor and Spencer Tracy! The Steve Martin remake is a very close second though.

Does the Princess Bride count as a wedding movie because if it does then…it totally needs to be added to the list!!
