One He Can’t Read

Don’t worry, Cinnamon Buns. You’ll find out eventually. Just don’t ruin the surprise, please? This is probably the first post in a series about the same thing, so keep watching for this banner!

Now that he’s gone, let’s talk, ladies! We are talking about: boudoir shoots.

At first, when I started reading wedding blogs and saw mentions of boudoir shoots, I thought, “Why would people do that? Why pay for a photographer when you can just wear that same outfit for your fiance at home?” I have to say, I did not understand the point of spending all that money on:

  • photographer
  • hair
  • makeup
  • various waxing and exfoliating treatments
  • mani and pedi (because no point getting everything else done and still having raggy nails!)
  • new and fancy underthings

Then I thought about my assumption that all those garments in the photoshoots were new. Were they? I have to admit, I have bras and underwear I wear daily, and that’s it. No special-occasion stuff. OK, I only wear my sports bra on certain days (and those are exceedingly rare), but that’s even more boring.

Around the time I was thinking these thoughts, I got into a conversation with a friend who said that her bra and undies always match. What!? I mean, I know there are generally matching sets available, but I tend to buy new bras at one time and new undies at a different time. Even if I wanted to buy matching, I probably couldn’t. Said friend did say that she doesn’t need to wear the exact right set—if there’s black in her bra, black undies are acceptable and so on. Still, it made me think harder about underpants. Cinnamon Buns has never commented about my lack of interesting undergarments. The odd times I’ve mentioned it, he has said things along the lines of “Whatever makes you feel pretty, love,” “I think you’re gorgeous no matter what you wear,” and (his favourite) “It’d look better on the floor.” *leer*;)

I was still feeling like boudoir would be something I wouldn’t do, when I found this post from our own Mrs. Jelly Beans.

Baking? Cute apron? Oooh, silicone spatula…

OK, so maybe I was interested in things in this photo that the lovely lady’s husband probably wasn’t, but it made me see that boudoir shoots could be more than just standing around in your underwear in front of a wall or rolling around under a sheet. This photo shoot put boudoir photos back on my radar, even though I’m still undecided as to whether I’d actually do one.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around how people keep it a surprise. Don’t fiances notice an influx of new undies? A random trip to the waxer? Mysterious mani/pedis (something I only do for special occasions)? Coming home with crazy eye makeup? I guess you could take the eye makeup off at the studio and get rid of the fancy hairdo. It’d be easy to get out of the house with a bag of clothes when he’s at work, but what if he suddenly doesn’t have to work that day? Do you lie? I can just imagine a fiance getting the wrong end of the stick—him finding the secret stash of underwear he’s never seen before, and then she goes out mysteriously one night and won’t say where she was, and it all goes downhill from there.

If you’ve done a boudoir shoot, I want to know! How did you keep it a surprise? Were all the undies new and exciting?

I did one, I used all of FI’s favorite undies (and overcoats, and shoes ;P)– but he was very much aware they were happening- however, he doesn’t get to see them until his bachelor party :D it made it easy not to try to sneak around taking them (especially since our roommate [and my bestie] took the pics) but still keeps part of them a surprise.

And go for it- it’s a blast.

For mine, my sister came into town. He didn’t think twice about us going shopping all day (ok, we lied.) Surely you have a friend who could “convince” you to go with her to get manis or waxing? Or go on your lunch break before your shoot and be careful undressing in the interim?

Just make sure you’re packed well in advance, and bring everything that you would need to go back to “normal” so he doesn’t suspect anything (example - during my shoot we took a few awesome shots of me in my bikini in the shower, and then I used the hotel’s blow dryer so my hair was dry and normal when I got home!)

And don’t be afraid to branch out from just panties and bras. I stole two of my husband’s shirts, one button down dress shirt and a jersey of our favorite sports team. However, I would advise that you buy at least one something spicy, because after he sees the photos, he’ll probably want you to do a little modeling :) I also invested in some stockings which totally changed the look of my outfits.

What puzzles me is the common practice of giving the groom the boudoir album the morning of the wedding, with all his groomsmen and the photographer there to witness it. WHAT IF HE GETS A BONER???

I just did a boudoir shoot about a month ago. I bought one new panty & bra set, and have to admit, I felt stupid in it. I was so worried about the way it was going to look, and if it was “sexy” etc, that the night before, I just went into my lingere drawer and picked out bras and panties I knew he already loved.

I also took some just wearing his motorcycle jacket. Yep, total nudie underneath. Just the jacket and let me tell you, FANTASTIC photos!

I did 3 outfit changes: my normal bra/panty set, new bra/panty set, and his jacket. My photographer took over 350 photos. And… I only loved about 20 of them. They are very tasteful. Nothing tacky and as we’re already married, he actually took the photo and hung it in his locker at work. I have to admit.. that was like a huge YAY for me being I’m a plus sized girl and it made me feel so beautiful that he was proud of me and those photos. I would definately recommend doing it.

I bought myself a few new things, but my then-FI didn’t notice. I went for a wax and a spray tan - told him it was “practice” for the wedding - to see if I liked it (the spray tan) and how much it hurt (the wax). What threw him off was when I asked to borrow his guitar. I just said “Don’t worry about it” and he didn’t ask again. He had ABSOLUTELY no idea. I gave the book to him the morning after the wedding, because, like Miss Panther said, the idea of giving it to him the morning of in front of all his groomsmen just freaked me out. Plus, I wanted to see his face while he looked at the pictures for the first time. And, um, yeah…it was priceless.

I am a boudoir photog and I have had it done and let me tell you my husband is clamoring for the next time I have it done. I am a plus size girl, and I was SCARED AS HEY-BOB even after doing it so many times for other girls.

But when I showed him those pics I felt AWESOME, after doing I am even more so a proponet but for an entirely different set of reasons, it really was more about me feeling sexy and getting some of my olds swag back. (I’m a mom of three and all of my swag had been reduced to my SwaggerSUV.. )

I didn’t get boudoirs until weddings came into my life but I think it is such a great gift. I haven’t done it (maybe for a 1 year paper anniversary present) but I am certain Mr. G would be fairly oblivious to new undies and even a wax. Men! I am curious about this too though…

For all the hair/makeup/waxing etc., just say they are trials leading up to the wedding (boys won’t notice if you have more than one trial. And for new lingerie, just say you’re trying out different styles of the wedding night ;) ;)

@Ms. Panther: I like you. My thoughts exactly, but you made me laugh.out.loud!

I’ve thought about doing boudoir shots, but… I have *no* idea how to keep it secret. And I tend to ruin surprises easily because I can never contain my excitement. I’m also nervous about going to a photog and saying “Hey… So… Will you take nudies of me? It’s a common thing, I promise…”

I did do one, but I forgot that my google calendar is shared with Mr. Jelly so the surprise was ruined! A great place to buy cute, cheap lingerie is Target. Oh, and Ross/TJ Maxx, too.

@Miss Panther: I have been wondering the same thing! I’d love a photo of his expression when he sees it, but what happens then? What if he does get excited? Does he run to the bathroom? Does he think about dead puppies until it goes away? What if the other people in the room want to see what made his eyes go all wide like that?

I did a boudoir shoot and am so glad I did!! After the photos came back, I felt like it was more for me than for him. When again am I ever going to look this good and have this no-baby-yet-to-mess-up-my-belly-and-sexy-body???? :D

Okay, I did one for my boyfriend for xmas. If you go to a studio it would be much easier- I had to throw him out of our apartment to have a photoshoot which was great. Actually I think it was cool maybe we’ll look back at the photos and be like, oh, this is in our 2nd apartment together!

My b.f. is not super aware. I had a stash of some victorias secret stuff that I was not dipping into but I kind of eased some of the pieces in, just so that all of the underwear in the shoot wasn’t entirely new. Anyway he doesn’t notice new underwear unless I point it out to him.

Unless you’re going to wear a thong, dont bother getting a wax. I did my nails and hair and makeup myself. I wanted it to look like me, not a glamour shots version that my b.f. wouldn’t see.

So, I argue that you can take a bunch of these items off the list. you can contact me if you have any questions! I was shy about it but it was a lot of fun and I just ordered a photobook of my shots off of shutterfly. I only spent money on new lingerie, $150 on the photographer, and a wax, as well as $30 for my shutterfly photobook.

Let me know if you have any questions!
