*Flicks my hair, turns my head and bats my eyelashes behind thick, thick glasses*
I’m exaggerating when I say that if you flip to the term “Opposites Attract” in the dictionary, you’d probably find a photo of Mr. French Toast and me next to it.
But truth be told, we really were worlds apart. Although we went to high school together in San Francisco, we were far from being high school sweethearts. In fact, he was a senior with a slight bad-boy twist. And me? I was a lowly sophomore. With thick glasses. And a mushroom haircut. I wish I can say I turned into the hot girl whom all the guys wanted to take to prom a la She’s All That, but who am I kidding? I still am that nerdy girl, minus the mushroom head.
Not fair that Rachel Leigh Cook is cute even though she’s supposed to portray a nerd
Mr. French Toast had a steady girlfriend and hung with the “cool” crowd.
He was the guy that schmoozes with girls by the lockers, and I was the girl carrying a million textbooks and a heavy backpack who would walk by unnoticed. I never, in a million years, would even imagine that we’d end up together.
Fast forward 5 years. Pomp and Circumstance? Been there. Prom? Done that. We were now in college. He stayed local in Northern California, finally dropping that bad-boy figure and focusing on engineering. I was further away at Southern California, enjoying the sun, the beach and starting a co-ed fraternity with some friends.
And then I found out that Mr. French Toast was in the same fraternity at his university. We re-connected through the fraternity and started spending more time chatting online. During the summer of my third year in college, I moved back home and took on a summer job. Coincidentally, Mr. French Toast also worked at his summer job in the same area, so more opportunities for us to hang out presented themselves. When school started again in the fall, needless to say, those late night AIM chat sessions and cell phone minutes started to rack up.
One night we went out to dinner, purely as friends, and when I looked across the table, I realized that he had a really nice smile. And I said to him, “You have a really nice smile.” It was his smile that captivated me…and the rest, they say, is history.
