Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

We technically met with our venue, photographer, and DJ before we booked them…but let’s get serious: We knew we would book them before we even met them. After hearing great things about them from people we trusted, we basically had our deposit checks written the second we found out they were available for our June 2011 date.

And OK, we also kind of broke our cardinal rule of budget wedding planning: Don’t set your heart on anything when there’s still plenty of time to look for other options.

Luckily, those vendors weren’t budget busters and were totally in line with our $10,000 max total. We’ve grown as a budgeted couple and promise to not make that mistake again. Or, promise to not make that mistake again within reason.

On Having Love Affairs With Vendors, and Sometimes Having to End Them : wedding chicago music Jam1

Click here to be taken away to the land of amazing mixes that you will fall in love with. Trust me. It promises to give oodles of wedding-playlist inspiration.

We have a love-hate relationship with our budget, and when it comes to vendors, we try to prepare ourselves for disappointment. Too expensive? Let’s negotiate. Not willing to negotiate? Later, sucker.

And we really have had to say no…to a venue we fell in love with after we booked our real venue. Oh, the horror.

Remember when I told you about our dream to wed in a barn? Well, even after we booked our non-barn venue, we still still secretly clutched that dream in our hot little hands and kept our eyes peeled. And blessed wedding gods abound, we ended up finding one and it was all sorts of perfect: Perfect location on a few acres of perfect land, with perfect character and a perfect owner, with perfect potential for a perfect wedding.

It. Was. PERFECT.

But the price? Holy. They were asking almost $9,000 for the venue alone…this did not include food, drinks, decorations, linens, or ceremony chairs, among other important and quite necessary wedding-y things.

Like bathrooms. This price did not include bathrooms. We would have had to spend an additional $2,000 to get a portable bathroom trailer for our guests.

Oh, and did I mention ours would have been the first ever wedding on the property? Ever. Call me crazy, but the words “overpriced and inexperienced” are playing on a constant loop through my mind.

My mom, bless her sweet and stylish heart, sensed our frustration and promised to do anything she and my dad could for us to get this venue. But we declined because as perfect as this venue was, it wasn’t perfect for the budget. (And honestly, I don’t know too many budgets that it would be perfect for because that price is steep!)

So we walked away knowing that we won’t be forced to feed our guests pizza at the reception…a worry that other budget brides- and grooms-to-be have on a regular basis, I’m sure.

Have you had to negotiate with vendors to get them down to the right price? Or did you have to walk away from a too-expensive contract only to stumble upon a better (and cheaper!) option? And have you ever heard of having to rent $2,000 bathrooms?!

Like you, our dream was to have our wedding reception in a barn. We searched high and low and most were out of our 10k budget too, however we ended up finding one right under our noses at $180 per hour. Not too shabby. But good call not going with that expensive barn. Especially if they were inexperienced. That probably would’ve amounted to major unforseen problems!

WOW!! $9K for the venue ALONE??? how did they come to that price in the first place if they have never had a wedding there? that’s a huge red flag that it wasn’t meant to be, and you got the right venue in the first place. Ours was $6K but that included tables, chairs (not that we used them, we rented chiavari chairs), bathrooms of course lol, and an entire awesome aquarium for our guests to play in :) my mom did most of the haggling, and in some cases I have no idea what the final total came to. but she’s good at that so i’m sure she got a good deal!

I have been doing this with dresses. Even though i found the perfect designer that i want to work with, i keep going to the big bridal stores to try on more traditional wedding dresses!

We used Style Matters for our wedding, and they ROCKED. My favorite vendor by far. They will make sure everyone is dancing until the venue kicks you out!

That’s ridonkulous - $2k for bathrooms? Sounds like someone who isn’t prepared to host a wedding is trying to cash in on the barn-boom. Stick to your guns - not worth it!

@The IKEA Bride and @Ms.Editor: Holy crap, you guys are blowing my mind with excitement! We fell in love with their killer spinning and samples…did/are you using them for ceremony tunes, too?

Being a budget bride, I had to sacrifice so many things I wanted. In the end our wedding wound up being everything we wanted, so I guess it works out :)

On the opposite.. we had booked our photog at $1,700 for 7 hours and a CD of the images (nothing else) and I ended up winning a photography package at a bridal show that gave me: 2 photog, an album, and 8 hours of coverage for $1,000. We ended up canceling our first photog; even though we liked him, we got more services for less money in the end (even after losing our deposit!).

Our original venue also closed so we had to rebook at a new venue which ended up costing us less than our original venue (less what we had already put towards the first one which we have not recouped yet)

We were set on a beach reception venue and ended up finding one in our budget but had a similar experience when one of the appointments we made was for a tent on a dock and 9k pretty much got you the tent, location, bathrooms and a bridal changing room. And this was the cheaper of two venues owned by the same hotel.

@Miss Jam: No ceremony music for us. Our church has a strict no-DJ rule.

We had Ryan from Style Matters for our wedding- he was awesome! Definitely one of the easiest vendors to book- didn’t even meet with anyone else after Spencer.

We used Style Matters for our reception. They were amazing! So easy to work with and totally knew what we wanted. We had our wedding in a church so no ceremony music but our cocktail hour/dinner music was really interesting. We lucked out and had AMAZING vendors. Loved every single one of them, particularly Style Matters.

Also, I see you were having some budget issues with flowers. So did we and I found a great florist able to work in our budget. I’ll give you the name if you decide to go that route.
