DIY Project No. 1: Fabric Flowers

December 15th, 2010 @ 5:13 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

I’ve decided to finally try to complete a DIY project that I started almost three weeks ago.

DIY Project No. 1: Fabric Flowers :  wedding accessories costa rica diy flowers Pancakes {100 Layer Cake}

I do think of myself as crafty. I crochet, quilt, sew…I even know my way around a hot glue gun…I think. In honor of spring I have decided to make about two dozen fabric flowers to attach to my bridesmaids’ invitations.

So Mr. Pancakes and I went down to the fabric district and bought a yard of pink fabric and a yard of white tulle.

Things I forgot: felt, buttons, beads, and hot glue…It was a little overwhelming for me.

So this is the basic idea:

Go here for the directions from to Lanie on 100 Layer Cake.

Here are some other DIY fabric flowers that I considered. Enjoy!

Have you tried any of these other fabric flowers? Or do you know of others that are particularly easy??

These are pretty popular around the Bee. The only really popular bee project I did was embossing and I had my Internet browser open the whole time ;) Can’t wait to see how these turned out!

I’ve tried the fabric flowers from the Once Wed garland. They were easy to make (surprisingly!) but I had no use for a fabric flower garland. I tried to make the fabric flower into a pin, but the flower droops down…(better for a garland, not for a pin)

Every time I try to make a fabric flower out of chiffon, I end up swearing and/or bleeding and quitting the project prematurely. The fabric just moves around too much…don’t even try to cut a perfect circle out of it. Yeesh!

I made a bunch of these Martha Stewart ones for my wedding, both big and small:

i’ve made the flowers that are on the yellow headband. it took me some time to perfect it but once I got the twisting of the fabric, the wrapping and the very light hot gluing (so that it didn’t get everywhere) it was super easy!

I did the Maize in Montanna version with dark green corduroy. Super simple, and they give my teacher outfits a little bit of spark, I’ve also done the dahlia version on Martha Stewart’s site using a light jersey cotton (very difficult to work with).

My fave so far was this one http://blairpeter.typepad.com/weblog/2006/03/fabric_flowers.html I used a plain, light weight denim, in purple. They frayed juuuuust enough to make it awesome!

Do you know you can make Bridal bouquet from fabric too? http://mgmart.blogspot.com/2010/09/bridal-bouquets-lasting-reminder-of.html

Good luck with the DIY project :)
