About Ms. Sloth

Thank You for Being a Friendor

December 15th, 2010 @ 10:09 am by Ms. Sloth

Sometimes, I can’t believe how lucky Mr. S and I are. We have such talented, creative, and generous friends and family that are helping us out for free or at an incredible discount.

This post is dedicated to those incredible people. The people who are making our wedding possible. Our friendors.

Thank you for being our friendors!

Thank You for Being a Friendor : wedding philadelphia 0dcc2c9 0dcc2c9

Ooooh, I think I found my wedding necklace!

Hair - Mr. S’s sister-in-law is a stylist and salon owner. She’s going to do my hair and my bridesmaids’ hair for free!

Makeup - This is actually a friendor of a friend. Trying to find a makeup artist that was affordable and good had proven to be a challenge, and I had almost resigned myself to DIY-ing my face, but I was pretty nervous about it. I was complaining to my bridesmaids about the whole deal when Bridesmaid K said, “Oh! A friend of mine who I used to work with does makeup, and she’s amazing and cheap!” I got in touch with the girl, and her prices were totally in my budget. I haven’t had a trial yet, but if Bridesmaid K trusts her, I know that I can too.

Dessert - I’ve mentioned before that one of my bridesmaids is in school to be a pastry chef and that she’ll be making the desserts for the wedding. Lucky us! Another friend of mine likes to bake on the side, and her sweets are divine. When she found out that we wanted to have a dessert buffet, she asked if she could contribute as well. Um. OK. Twist my arm, why don’t you!

Coordination - I’ve mentioned this already, but my high school friend’s mother will be our month-of coordinator for a steal.

Florist - Again, this is more like a friendor of a friendor. I was telling the coordinator about my frustrating florist search, and she mentioned that her sister-in-law was a wedding florist! She negotiated a deal for me, and I couldn’t be happier.

DJ - In the dawn of our wedding planning, Mr. S and I had never even considered hiring a DJ. We were totally cool with renting a sound system and having an iPod reception. But then I remembered that an old friend of mine who worked at a radio station also deejays weddings part time. I figured I’d get in touch with him to see what he’d charge, and he gave us a great deal—only $100 more than the quote we’d gotten from our rental company for the sound system. SOLD.

Officiant - Mr. S and I couldn’t be less religious if we tried, and we knew from day one that we wanted a secular ceremony. And we didn’t want to be married by a stranger. Mr. S’s old roommate is one of our best friends and a super charming guy with stage presence, to boot. We asked him if he’d consider officiating at our wedding, and he got ordained online the next day.

I’m so excited about our friendors. It’s great that they’re helping us to save money, but it’s even better that most of the people who are working on our wedding are people who matter to us. The whole thing gives me warm fuzzies!

Are you using any friendors?

So many! And like you, I feel so incredibly lucky to have the friends I do. It makes me so happy that much of our wedding will be made by the hands of people I love.

One of my best friends (she was my freshman roommate!) is a textile artist and clothing designer, and she is designing and making my dress. Another college friend just got her MFA in printmaking, and is designing/printing our invites at cost. An old family friend is a semi-pro photographer, and is shooting the wedding for the cost of her trip. A friend of my fiance is officiating. Another family friend is making my jewelry. My mom is hosting the wedding at her house.

I think that’s it. We will have non-friendors doing the catering, flowers, hair and makeup, and my fiance’s suit/ring. But I think that’s it.

Miss Sloth! I may have to stalk you for your makeup artist ;).

I thought that PA didn’t recognize online-ordained officiants? Something about requiring a congregation. Mentioning just in case!

We are so blessed with our friends in the ceremony and our friends who are working behind the scenes. I cannot wait for our wedding, because it will be a product of love with gifts of help from our friends and family.

I am definitely taking advantage of friendors, it saves money and you know you can trust them becuase they are invested in your big day too! Also, love the Golden Girls necklace. In college each of my friends was a character and of course I was Dorothy because I was responsible lol

You’re so lucky to have so many friends (or friends of friends) in the various industries! I think the best part of using “friendors” is that they tend to actually care about your wedding, and not your money.

My brother married us, and my bff did our paper products and made our bouquets, along with my sister and they both threw me a bridal shower as well. And the venue was in the family, so I got that for a steal as well. We literally saved thousands of dollars for these things alone, and we got what we wanted, with a personal touch :)
