Controlling the Bride

December 15th, 2010 @ 5:52 pm by Ms Cheetah

After I bought my dressy-dress, I had one very important question for my bridal consultant: what kind of undies should I wear with this thing? She said I should wait for my fittings to see if I needed a bra, or if I should just have cups sewn into my dress. And then she suggested some kind of Spanx, just to make sure I’m as smooth as Bublé on the wedding day.

Controlling the Bride : wedding palm springs undergarments 6a00d83 Me & my bridesmaids the morning of my wedding. Your ’maids dance around you in their undies as you get ready, right?

I have never worn Spanx before so I have a couple concerns. Do they work? Are they comfortable to wear all day? And, um, going to the bathroom…is there really a hole for that? Do you really use it?

With my first fitting early in the New Year (What? How is 2010 ending already?) it’s time to start testing out some possible under-things. Armed with a 25% off + free shipping coupon I just ordered these three options to try out from Bare Necessities:

Controlling the Bride : wedding palm springs undergarments 394spa Simplicity High Waist Shaper by Spanx

Controlling the Bride : wedding palm springs undergarments 096spa Hide-n-Sleek Hi-rise Thigh Smoother by Spanx

Controlling the Bride : wedding palm springs undergarments 5063fle Weightless Power Hi-waist Slip by Flexees

Any advice for a Spanx newbie? Is there some great Spanx-like product that I should know about? Bridesmaid WD40 told me Target has some inexpensive Spanx-like options, so I plan to check those out soon, too.

What kind of undergarments are you wearing under your gown?

i just got married in July and i wore a one piece spanx, mine was biker shorts style with a strapless bra. i don’t like the skirt type, i find they tend to roll up. mine did have a “pee hole” but for some odd reason I never peed all night! LOL..

my advice is to try them on before you buy them. spanx don’t work for everyone, especially if you have a shorter torso. my spanx were supposed to fall under my bustline but they ended up going way over my bust. so i couldn’t wear them. i bought a similar pair in a different brand at kohls. those worked much better and weren’t so long.

I love Spanx (and Target’s Assets and other generic brands) & wear them almost on a daily basis…weird? I can’t help that I love a smooth tush and lack of muffin top in all of my clothes. They’re not scary in the least…although I am a little afraid of the pee hole, in the case of shifting when you accidentally pee on yourself.

Ugh, omg.

& PS, I got my favorite pairs of generic “Spanx” at a questionable indoor flea market, only $5 a pair! If there are any year-round places like that around you, I say to check ‘em out ; )

My advice is don’t go to small. If it’s rolling up on your or rolling down, chances are it’s a size to small. I had a shop lady tell me that some ladies try to go smaller thinking it will hold them in better, but it ends up bunching up and rolling everywhere.

I personally don’t like the version from Target “assets”- I thought they were too thick and uncomfortable. I did buy a thinner version from Kohls though and I like it. It was comfortable and didn’t move at all. It did not have a pee hole I don’t think- if it did I didn’t use it.

I’ve never worn real Spanx, but wear the Target Assets almost every day and love them. I’ve found the actual shapers are comfier than the ones sold near the hosiery, even though the shapers are thicker and scarier looking.

@lolo7835: I had the opposite problem - I bought the Target Assets ones to wear while trying on wedding dresses and my ht/wt was between sizes, so I went up. I’d forgotten the fact that I have like 15 extra pounds in my calves and biceps, so of course the spanx were too big. They stay on ok, but they are glorified bike shorts that serve no purpose other than sparing everyone else in the dress shop the sight of my thong.

I love Spanx! I’ve worn the ones at Target (assets) and they are ok but once you have the real deal, you’ll never look back! The ones I have do have the pee hole and it works perfectly! I suggest trying it out before the big day (weird but I promise it’ll make you more comfortable)!!

I got the Target version of Spanx thanks to having a wedding registry with them and receiving a coupon. But on the actual day, I found the (expensive) corset, petticoat, and many layers of my dress to be enough to hold it all in and very constricting as it was. I would’ve never been able to pull off going to the bathroom under all that!

Can you try them on in the store before you buy them? And, where do you buy spanx?

Does Victorias secret have anything comparable? Or are spanx the best bet for comfort? I would hate to get sweaty after dancing…did anyone have that problem?

I got the middle pair that you link and have worn them to every dress shopping trip & fitting so far and one wedding. They were totally comfortable through the all day shopping marathons and the dinner & dancing at the wedding.
I will say that they really are more of a smoother than a miracle fat cyncher. I put mine on the first time hoping to be transformed to 2 sizes smaller– this was not the case. They really did just shape all of my curves into a more smooth line.
I only remember peeing in them once- it was awkward, I’ll admit- I sort of squatted but then leaned forward to make sure any stray pee-stream or dripping didn’t fall back onto the material, all while pretty much sitting on my hands to hold the little crotch flaps open.. again to ensure no stray pee got anywhere. (Sorry– probably way TMI. But you asked!)
So.. yeah there was some effort to wearing them, but they did their job!

Thanks for all your advice!
@missbiscuit: Not TMI–that’s just the kind of stuff I want to know :)
@PARISGIRL: I ordered mine online (click on the product names), I think you might be able to try some one (Nordstrom?), but others come is sealed packs, like tights or hose.
@cutemommie: @lolo7835: I didn’t even think about them rolling!
@Miss Jam: @Angela: I love to hear that you can wear them often!
@Miss Ostrich: We should exchange notes ;)

@PARISGIRL: I got mine at Coldwater Creek. I think Talbots has them as well. They let me try them on before I bought them so I could test which size I needed… I just had to do it over underwear like a bathing suit.

I’m not wearing Spanx at my wedding, but I wear them occasionally under regular dresses. Victoria’s Secret also has their own version of Spanx, but they weren’t as comfortable when I tried them on.

A great place to get discount spanx is a Filene’s Basement. That’s where I buy mine, because sometimes it can be expensive. And I totally agree with the recommendation not to get them too small! If they are overly restricting, or roll down, you’ll be miserable!

@Mrs. Glasses: I’ve been looking for a corset. Did you buy yours online by chance?

Love this post! I tried a generic brand once and it kept rolling which made it uncomfy- I will have to try some of these suggestions.
