I’m So…Not Excited?

December 16th, 2010 @ 10:10 am by Mrs. Waffle

I am pretty much gung-ho, woohoo, and all that jazz about everything pertaining to the wedding except for the invitations. The excitement and inspiration is just…not there. It’s kinda bumming me out. I asked Waffle if he had any thoughts on the matter.

“Can’t we just do an e-vite or a Facebook invite?”

Sorry, Mr. W. That’s just not an option in my book.

I have scoured the Internet and looked in wedding magazines, but nothing is really standing out. There is a lot of gorgeous stuff out there, and nothing feels right to me. What is wrong with me? I love paper! I love cards and invitations!

The stress is really starting to mount for me, too, because I have a meeting with our invitation designer next week and I have nothing to bring to the table. As a designer myself, I know how frustrating it can be when a client has NO clue what she wants and just expects you to pull some creative genius out of your back pocket. I can’t be that client. That client makes me bananas!

Being a very visual, tactile person, I am going to go to a local store called The Paper Place later tomorrow in the hopes that seeing and feeling some paper I just can’t live without grabs me by the collar and says, “Here you go, kiddo! I’m everything you’ve been missing!”

Is there a part of your wedding planning where you just can’t muster up the excitement?

I’m not particulary excited about invites either. So I’ve just taken the approach that we’ll do a simple/traditional thermography invite on nice paper. I’ve shown a few examples to my FI and he said he liked the idea of putting a border around it, so that’ll be included too. We aren’t doing a theme wedding or anything and I like the feel of nice paper, I just don’t need a whole bunch of ‘design’ going into it. Once I accepted this, I felt much better. There’s no obligation to have some stand out stationary for the wedding.

yes, the ceremony reading selections and song selections. the readings are supposed to be something very meaningful but i just felt overwhelmed trying to sort thru all the options out there! and i had no inspiration to take a passage from something personal to me or my husband. and the songs, that was weird because we are HUGE music fans so it should have been easy! it felt overwhelming to me too. the only ones i knew for sure were Across the Universe for the bridesmaids processional and Here Comes the Sun for the recessional. mothers entrance? bridal processional? we had nothing. we just talked to our friends who were playing the ceremony to get suggestions from them, and i’m happy with our selections for the most part. as for the invitations, those were one of my favorite parts! i designed them myself and LOVED how they turned out, i spent months on them lol

Oh man, I am TOTALLY that client for the poor florists. I have no clue, and I don’t care very much. I don’t want to spend a lot, and I want it to look good. That’s where my ideas end. I don’t know how many arrangements I want, whether I want a bridal bouquet, what colors, what flowers, what theme…I’m clueless. And I don’t know how to become un-clueless!

Trying on wedding dresses……isn’t that horrible? I’m afraid of not being able to try anything on because I’m a size 14. I’m trying to lose weight but it’s going very slowly. I like reading about the bee’s experience with wedding dresses because it makes me feel better! Also I’m a designer too and I want to design my own invites but then sometimes I feel lazy and just want to pay someone on etsy to do it. Going to see and feel the paper might work for me, I’m going to try it!

We’ve got 15 days until the BIG event … we originally envisioned a beachy type small get together with a reception to follow with hundreds of our closest friends and family once we returned!

Once we announced the engagement we quickly realized that that was not going to work for us. It has now turned into a huge new year’s eve party/event ~ I’m excited but exhaustion has quickly taken over. At this point, I’ll just be happy to NOT have to make another decision.

I was just so happy to get married that much of the wedding was a “what’s easy? sure … that works for me!” attitude. Funny thing is that it’s all come together without any major drama or issues. With a LOT of extra things that we never thought we’d do or even want!

Mr. Ellie has a lot of opinions and jumps right in to get me hyped up about some of the most mundane tasks re: wedding planning. Makes it fun and easy.

Now, with everything DONE (just finished buying all of our liquor last night!) …. I’m ready for the HONEYMOON!! Happy planning and Happy New Year!!

I think going to the store and seeing them in person is exactly what you need. I was all over the place with what I wanted until I actually sat down with books of real invites in front of me. I found one that wasn’t the one but it gave me the inspiration to design the one along with help from a professional.

if you’re working with a designer, that makes things easier. we just looked through what she had done in the past and picked bits and pieces of different things that we liked. she then did 3 completely different mock-ups of designs. then we chose one of those. then she make that 8 different versions of that (electronically) that we chose from. it was WAY easier than looking through books and books and books of invites at papyrus or similar. if you have a good designer, they should be able to help design an invite that will compliment your theme and the feel that you’re going for.

I know what I don’t want…which is 90% of the invitations out there.

I’ve decided on a concept (monogrammed) and that it’s not going to be uber fancy, but other than that I have no idea & I’m really not fussed about it.

But then again, it IS kind of early to be thinking of them, so who knows as time gets closer. We’ll see.

I had the same problem when I was planning my wedding. I say pick a theme or something uniquely you and your fiance and go from there. Sometimes focusing on the details will only make you go crazy, the big picture may help you come up with the pieces you want to create your ideal invite!

Good luck! :)

So sorry to hear that, it’s hard to feel exited about something when you are not sure of what you want in the first place!
But if you have nothing to bring to the table at the meeting with the designer, focus instead on explaining and showing the theme and overall feel of the wedding - perhaps the designer will be able to actually come up with something that really reflects the tone of your wedding! And if you can’t be specific on what you do like, make at least a list of what you already know you don’t like - this also will help! Good luck and I’m sure once the vision is more clear you’ll be feeling so much more exited! Sending the invites is the first moment that makes it all “real”, for you and for your guests!

Good luck with your invites! I personally am having a hard time with the photographer. Not that I’m not excited about it, just that I’m overwhelmed by the choices.

I’m with you. For some reason I was just not into the whole invitation thing, which was surprising for someone like me who’s a pen, ink and paper addict; it was like a kid saying, “Who cares if Santa gives me coal?”

Luckily our designer brought along a fantastic presentation book, and after flipping through it I was able to say “those fonts, exactly, with these colours and a design kind of like this”. She went to work, got it right on the second try, and they looked great.

Then they were painstakingly hand-addressed by yours truly, slapped with all manner of necessary stamps, and unceremoniously chucked in the mail. And you know what? I was unabashedly glad to be rid of them.

You should contact my friend, Kat, who is a letterpress designer in Austin. She makes really awesome things or she will print whatever you might come up with.
