Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

What to Read?

December 16th, 2010 @ 7:08 pm by Mrs. Knitting

I’ve been so focused on our wedding that I kind of forgot about our honeymoon. Okay, I didn’t actually forget, I just didn’t really think about the fact that soon the wedding will be over and I will get to be on my honeymoon with my new husband.

As you might recall from this post we’re having a pretty relaxed cozy Christmasy honeymoon. I don’t really need to do much of anything to prepare for it, but one thing I did want to do is put together a reading list. While we plan on doing lots of active things like snowshoeing and skating, I suspect we’ll also have lots of cozy reading by the fire moments and I’d like to make sure I have lots of good things to read.

Here’s a few books I’m considering at the moment:

Cleopatra, a Life by Stacey Schiff

This book seems to be everywhere right now and I’m taking that as a good sign. Even Martha is recommending it!

Queen Elizabeth: the Queen Mother by William Shawcross

Since the William and Kate engagement announcement, but I’ve reading a lot of British royal family biographies. I also just got it out of the library and it turns out it’s the biggest book ever. I’m not kidding. It’s hilariously huge.

The Postmistress by Sarah Blake

I’m always on the lookout for amazing fiction and I’ve heard good things (that’s code for it had was displayed prominently at Chapters and I’m easily influenced).

In an ideal world I would have never read any of the Harry Potter books before so I could read them all on our honeymoon. It seems like heaven to read them snuggled in some gorgeous cozy library with a fire going after a day of snowshoeing and skating. Although, if that was the case then there’s probably a good chance that I would spend all of my honeymoon reading and completely ignoring my husband.

Do you have a really good fiction recommendation for me?

OMG I am reading the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, and I cannot get enough. Buy them, and love them.

From the books you mentioned, I think you would like The Other Boelyn Girl.

My all time favorite is East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

ENJOY! and Happy reading :)

Trust me, Harry Potter can be re-read, and I think in a cozy chair by the fireplace is the best place to do it. You can pretend you are in the common room in Gryffindor Tower!

My new fave is the Hunger Games trilogy. Very suspenseful, but it is a young adult book. So good though!

I just got done reading “Even Silence Has an End” by Ingrid Betancourt. AMAZING story, couldn’t put it down. A tad bit of a downer, but a powerful story!

I just created a post about this the other day to get some good books to read. I second the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo…great series! I just picked up some Jodi Picoult books upon recommendation. Also, I got the Hunger Games book and I heard the Host is good by Stepahnie Meyers.

No books to recommend… but, girl getting married sparks some madness and you won’t have time to read anything! You will just be so enamored by each other and you will probably be pretty “busy”! Me and my hubby lived together for years before getting married but being away on the honeymoon gives the romance factor a huge boost! You should be reading each other! I say bring just one. If anything you will have time to read on the plane :)

I can’t say enough great things about the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins…they’re technically young adult (pish posh) but they certainly don’t seem like it. The best part is they’re hard-hitting, insanely suspenseful fast reads, so IF you get any time to read, you can quickly devour a lot of book. : )

I love Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series…characters from my favorite books pop up in unexpected places!

If you like historical fiction (with a dash of romance), Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnation series is great. I’m so addicted, it’s not even funny…

I cant wait to read some good books on the honeymoon- it feels like all my time has been swallowed by study/work/wedding and I cant wait to have “me and book” time again! Im a sucker for British royal family biographies too….

I have to third the “The Girl…” series. SO GOOD. Also, I recommend Tana French. She’s an Irish mystery writer. Her books are fantastic - Into the Woods, The Likeness, and Faithful Place.

@ktbrady: Yes! And it’s still equally good if not even better the second time around!

Have you read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell? It’s got magic, like Harry Potter, but it is written more in the style of Jane Austen. I love it so much!
I also second @lifegavemelimes: the Thursday Next books are also awesome, and full of booky references.

Well if you like history, and you like ficton- you’ll LOVE historical fiction! :-)

Can I suggest ‘Pillars of the Earth’ or ‘World without End’ by Ken Follett?

Without a doubt, hands down, two of my favourite books, ever. Pillars was on Oprah’s list and both have somewhat of a cult following. And TOTALLY perfect for by the fire reading :-)

He’s also just relased a new one, set in the 1st world war but I dont think its quite as good as the other two.

Go buy it, go buy it now!! :-)

Have you read the Help? Love it.
Also, the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is great for fireside reading! and honeymoon reading for that matter!

When I realized what this post was about, I have to admit my excitement level was probably a little beyond necessary! Talking about books is probably one of my favorite things in the world!!! Might I add Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and also Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer to the list.

@bridecat- I just finished The Help a few weeks ago…absolutely amazing!

I second @bridecat; the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon! Historical time-travel romance; sounds weird but very entertaining!
