Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!

And They Called It Puppy Love…

December 17th, 2010 @ 10:07 am by Mrs. Pancakes

This is my ring bearer. (Isn’t this an amazing picture? He really loves to give kisses.)

And They Called It Puppy Love... : wedding costa rica pets Bourbon

His name is Bourbon Thomas Monroe III. I know that’s a lot of name for such a small dog. At four-and-a-half pounds, he is the cutest six-year-old I know! He’s a Maltese/poodle mix and has the best little personality.

He is the other love of my life and has been for many years. He was the man that lay in bed with me when I was at my worst. He spent every minute by my side during Hurricane Katrina and cried softly in my lap on the plane home. It only seems right that he would stand by my side on the biggest day of my life.

I have such a soft spot for puppies at weddings:

The problem is how do you get a puppy to Costa Rica?? Since B is so small, he can fly in the cabin with us, and since he’s not a flat-nosed dog, there are no restrictions on flying overseas.

From what I can tell, Costa Rica is not a quarantine country, so as long as he’s had his rabies shot at least 30 days before we arrive and he has a certificate of health, we should be good to go. I am not quite sure about bringing him back into the States, though. Besides that, I would just have to figure out how much extra it will cost to fly with him and remember to pack him a bag of food and toys.

My biggest concern is that I am not sure if he would actually enjoy being out there. He’s a little anti-social in his old age, and the whole thing might just be really stressful for him. On the other hand, being in a kennel for a week would also make him pretty sad. I’ve traveled with him in the past, but he’s never been on a plane for more than two or three hours, so I’m not sure how he would handle it. I suppose it will really come down to how complicated it will be to get him there and back.

There are obviously a lot of things I need to consider, but I would love to make this happen. Has anyone every traveled with a small dog? What about puppy ringbearers…do or don’t??

I am hoping we can convince our church to let us use our dogs as ring bearers also - they are also maltipoos!!

As for flying - we have flown ours to and from NY and Puerto Rico and next time we go back to Costa Rica they are going with us. As far as I know there are no restrictings bringing dogs to and from Costa Rica, but if you go to the USDA website I believe they have all the travel information you need. Also usually the air lines website will tell you. They will tell you he has to sit in his carrier under the seat, but they always are softies for cute little dogs and never make them actually stay in there :)

I have no advice about traveling with pets, I just wanted to say that your dog is the cutest!

We have taken our Doxies over seas and brought them together on the plane. We needed a specific carrier, but it will specify on the crate that it is “airplane safe”.

I would LOVE to incorporate our pups in the wedding, but Daisy gets really excited when she sees new people and tends to roll over pee everywhere. So, probably not the best decision. :)

Your doggie is adorable! You might take this with a grain of salt, because I’ve never travelled with a dog, but I’ve heard there are some safe sedative type pills that the vet can prescribe to keep the pet calm during travel. I have no idea what they are, but it might be worth a call or visit to the vet to find out if they have any options…good luck!

oh bourbon. this is love at first sight. i had my dogs in the wedding, not as ringbearers, but just walking down the aisle with my sister. we travel with my pugs all the time, and they actually take to it very well–they just sleep the entire time. i have heard of owners who give their dogs a smidgen of benadryl to make them sleepy if necessary. definitely ask your vet first, as bourbon is so tiny!

So cute! I would say if you can find (errr…. pay) someone to watch him while you are running around and getting ready so he isnt lonely, and of course if it’s easy to fly him and get him back home… DO IT!

Oh and don’t bother going to the vet for sedatives… just go buy generic over the counter benadryl and give him like 1/2 of one about half an hour before take off. I say only 1/2 a pill since he is so itty bitty. 1 pill is enough for a 8 lb puppy for a 7 hour road trip. This info came from my vet. It just makes them drowsy but not so out of it that they dont know whats going on. They just sleep and totally go to the bathroom when you take them. For 4 bucks its worth the peace of mind :)

Awww what an adorable furbaby! I wish my gals could have been at the wedding, but I know they would not behave….they are a bit jumpy in excited situations!

Awww what a cutie pie! I am crazy and bring my rabbit on 8 hour road trips from L.A. to S.F., but I do worry about the stress it puts on him. The little guy is shaking in his cage the whole time. Tough decision!

Pancakes, we brought our 8-lb pup to the east coast from Guam and back again! It’s over 22 hours of travel and he was a champ. Your vet will know what you need, but start early. Guam is a little psycho about bringing pets back so we had to start prepping him 8 months ahead of time. Our cost for international travel was $200 at the ticket counter each way. Message me if you want any other info :)

My dog kept me sane during Katrina! I would watch way too much CNN while crying, and then notice how much fun she was having running around in the country, and I would just have to take a break to play with her!
