Make It vs. Buy It

Make It vs. Buy It : wedding palm springs veil Goawaym

Mr. Cheetah, are you there?

No?

Good. Now back to the veil discussion.

As I mentioned the other day, I’m in love with long veils and I plan on wearing one during our ceremony. I tried on a drop dead gorgeous one when I bought my dress. It was cut slightly different then most of the cathedral veils I’ve seen, I believe my consultant called it a Rectangle Cut. But it was $400. For two unadorned pieces of tulle—albeit long and pretty pieces of tulle. I know veils can reach much higher than $400, but since I want multiple veils $400 seemed a little steep. But I wasn’t worried. Hey, I can sew a little, why not just make my own? Sewing, Beagle, Cola, and Perfume did it, so maybe I should give it a try.

Then I learned about OBridal.com by Occansey Designs here in the hive. OBridal custom makes veils to your specifications often for much cheaper than bridal salons. They even make rectangular cut veils!

Making my own veil has been my plans for months. But I’m nervous. I have sewn, but I’ve never made a veil before, and 2 tiers of 100+ inches of tulle seems a bit intimidating. I feel like I could do a decent job…but perhaps OBridal could do an awesome job?

Pros of making it

  • It’s cool to make things!
  • It’ll be cheaper (estimated at $24-50 to make, $70-90 to buy)

Pros of buying it

  • It’s so easy and will take only a couple minutes vs. a few hours of work & planning
  • I won’t have to worry about Mr. Cheetah seeing me make it
  • I can’t screw it up (I hope)

I’ve noticed as it gets closer to my wedding date, I’m having the make it vs. buy it debate quite often.

So, what should I do, hive?

My mom made my veil. She took it a step further by beading it, but she seriously went to Michael’s and just bought veil stuff and it looked fine even without the beading. (Actually the beading was a hot mess and this is the only place I’ll actually admit that!) But when I was trying on veils and DB me and my friends were whispering to each other, “Let’s just make this. $200 for this is BS!” I recommend the fashion district - you can get veils for cheap there too!

I feel like the cost difference isn’t that big and (personally) I’d be willing to spend the bit extra to save myself the time and work. So unless it’s been something you’ve always wanted to do (not thought you HAD to do) I would buy

If you can afford it, I’d just buy it and get it taken care of! You’ll already be saving a lot of money by not getting your veil through a bridal salon. :)

Buy it! I bought a gorgeous cathedral veil with scattered rhinestones for 30.00 off ebay. It was easy, simple, efficient and CHEAP.

PM if you want the name of the store :)

I tried to make mine cuz I looked at designs and thought how “hard could it be?” but it was a disaster since I didn’t have enough room to lay it out on the floor. In the end my MOH who can sew made it for me. If you want anything other than just tulle it’ll take forever to put the details in. I only put a lace edge on mine and it took her forever to sew it on. So if you want some sort of beading or decorations and the price isn’t that huge of a difference I would just buy it and save yourself the time and trouble. If you just want a plain veil with nothing then you should make it yourself if you have the floor space to lay it out flat.

I’ve been having the make v buy debate on many wedding things lately. (I am going to buy my veil, off etsy… I just haven’t figured out if I want fingertip or waltz length yet.) It seems with most things buy is winning… it’d be fun to make things, but most things will end up being cheaper to buy than to try to buy all the materials to make something, then put it together to “hopefully” look ok. If it doesn’t I’d have to buy anyway!

I’ve been thinking of things I want to make lately & then doing some research only to find out buying would be less expensive. :-/

I voted to buy it. You have to think of the cost in terms of your time/sanity in addition to dollars. Saving 20-40 just would just not be worth it to me (plus I can’t cut straight to save my life)

Buy it! That’s the site where I bought my veil - they were very nice, and the veil was gorgeous!

I bought my veil from OBridal, and they did an amazing job. I actually purchased silk tulle from a merchant in England and had it shipped to OBridal. They made me the most beautiful silk tulle veil, at 1/3 of the cost. It might be cheaper to make it yourself, but it will definitely save you the headache!

as someone who made her cathedral length lace-edged veil: MAKE IT. (or at least attempt it) supplies were so cheap. i got like $5 worth of tulle from joann’s, enough to make 2-3 cathedral length veils & a pack of clear combs. laying it out to cut the shape is the hardest part but i laid down a colored flat sheet on the floor, folded the tulle down the middle long ways & cut carefully. i only had to cut once :) and if you want a plain rectangle cut veil, i bet you could get it done in an evening. i made a plain single layer fingertip length veil for a friend, literally took me 30 min. TRY DIY FIRST! you’ll surprise yourself.

I haven’t done much research, but I’m always a little confused when people talk about ’sewing’ their veils. Isn’t it more ‘cutting’ your veil? I haven’t yet seen a veil big enough to have seams in it (at least not any that show up in pictures), so really it is more about cutting the right shape.

I suppose you have to sew it to a comb, but I feel like the cutting is the bigger part. I’d totally try making it!

Buy it. The cost factor to me is irrelevant. You can always sell it afterwards to recoup some of the extra and you’ll save yourself time and stress.

Can you give it to your seamstress? I got $6 of tulle from Jo-Ann’s (the seamstress assured me that this is the same tulle in the expensive veils) and gave it to her to cut. She included it in the cost of making my dress, but I imagine it wasn’t too intensive.

It would be cheaper than paying $200 for some polyester tulle, and you would have the exact veil you want. You don’t have to do EVERYTHING yourself for your wedding. :)

Cheetah! Check out Joyous Illusions on Etsy before you spend any more. I bought my cathedral length veil there. I was SO pleased with the quality of the sewing (she even added teeny-tiny loops so I could secure the barrette with bobby pins!) as well as the customer service of Shirley! Check it out.

Your sanity is definitely worth just buying it.
