What’s The Dilly USPS?

December 17th, 2010 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. Zebra

What's The Dilly USPS? : wedding postage providence Kingque KingQue

??????????????

My brother’s fiance notified me last week that the price of stamps is supposed to increase by 2 cents on January 2, 2011. The fact that we want to send out our invitations right around that date has me a little worried about the procedure.

I was going to buy up Ye Olde Liberty Bell forever stamps and call it a day, but then I did the math.

Stamps are very VERY expensive when buying in bulk, as you well know by now. ‘Tis the season! Zeb and I are sending our 160 invitations with 160 RSVP cards and estimating having to send 160 Thank you cards. That would be 480 stamps if my math is correct—although very rarely is my math correct. At 2 additional cents per stamp that is a whopping $9.60! 10 bucks—to fill the budget deficit and possibly save some worker’s jobs. Yeah…that is $10 I am totally willing to spend. I really hate the idea that snail mail will soon be rendered useless. I, for one, love receiving letters in the mail—or even a hand written note. It’s one of those things that can instantly change my day from bad to good. Unfortunately I can’t find any hard, steadfast facts about whether or not it is indeed increasing. My very quick google search only resulted in a proposal from the summer. I can’t find anything that says it is most definitely increasing. Although I’m not worrying about the price, this does pose a problem for me and the other brides sending their invites around the same time. What stamps do we use? What’s the procedure USPS? HUH! Can I use my Kings and Queens and you’ll give me a grace period? If I get them out by December 31st (ha—yeah right) will you still deliver it? It’s looking like I’ll probably have to use Ye Olde Liberty Bell on the RSVP cards which I’ll just get right on over that bridge. But…could you give us the 411 USPS? I’d really like some time to figure it all out. DON’T STRESS ME OUT LIKE THIS!

It probably isn’t going through…right? I mean—they would have notified us by now? It’d be all over the news. Granny, run to the post office! Save yourself some cold hard cash before it’s too late.

Have you heard whether or not the price of stamps will increase in 2011?

As I understand it, shipping rates (for packages) are set to increase, but not postage for letters (ie: 1-once is still 44 cents). In October, the Postal Rate Commission rejected the 2 cent increase on ’stamps’.

The good news is it isn’t confirmed yet which means it probably won’t happen on Jan 2.

Girl, now you have me worried. For our March 5th, wedding I was planning on sending out invites right around the same time! Ugh, I will let you know if I have any definitive answers from usps. My MOH’s dad is a mail carrier, I will be making a call today :)

Buy the Forever stamps and don’t worry about it. I think they are supposed to be good indefinitely.

I agree with Oracle. I just went to the USPS website and saw only news about the shipping rates increasing, nothing about the regular letter….not that there is anything regular about wedding mail! For your RSVPs and everything though, you could always go with the new “Forever” stamps (or as my post man calls them, Fir-ever). They have evergreens on them and IMO are pretty.

I asked our post office before ordering stamps last week and they said no, so I hope they were telling the truth. The good thing is that our invites only need 81 cents to ship, but I plan on putting the king and queen stamps, so even if it did increase 2 cents we would still be ok.

They better not increase though, because I would have to add more to the postcard stamps.

Ditto - postage is NOT increasing in January. Possibly will in May/June timeframe though.

The USPS’s request to raise the price of stamps was declined. They won’t be going up.

They canceled the postage increase! So, no need to panic.

I went to the post office about a week ago. They said that it will not increase in January, but there is a chance for it to increase in May!

Another no here. I asked the Post Office recently too, and the request to increase first class mail postage was denied. Like other posters have said, it could increase in spring.

Postage rates here in Canada go up every January! They always sell 1 or 2 cent stamps, so if you really want to use a current stamp design, buy them now, and buy your extra 2 cents later (or now, those stamps are available all year round!).

I think credit card solicitations and wedding invites alone will keep the Post Office afloat! We had to use a weird coupling of fruit stamps (which I thought looked well…”special triangle”ish if you catch my drift) and Tiffany lamp stamps on our RSVP cards, b/c while our invites went out before the postage increase, our RSVPs were due after. We used RSVP postcards which worked out A LOT cheaper. My husband and I agree -just raise the postage to a buck and leave us alone with the $.02 stamps for a while!

We used the “forever” bells, just to be safe. Our invites have already been mailed out, but the rsvp deadline is in the middle of January, so I didnt want any issues. I asked my local post office branch worker, and he said the rates are being changed, but they havent been given the official date yet. (That was at the beginning of Dec. when we mailed out our invitations.)
