Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Your Helpful Tools Are Not Helping

December 17th, 2010 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Brooch

When we registered at Bed Bath and Beyond, they told us about their online tools. They host wedding websites, provide a budget, guest list manager, seating chart application, and a lot of other things.

Well, I’m one of those people who loves spreadsheets, but I love them so much that I have too many of them. I probably had three spreadsheets for our guest list alone in Google Docs until it was time to send our save the dates and get them organized. I actually ended up erasing them all and starting again. Figures.

Mr. B joking said to me, “You’re so organized, you’re unorganized!” Well, thanks. That’s no new news here. He’s right though, I am pretty unorganized, and as much as I appreciate all the tools out there that are supposed to help me get everything done, all that stuff is more harmful than helpful for a person like me.

When I got an email from our planner introducing us to the awesome wedding window organizer, I was so excited. This is it, I thought! I’ll finally get organized, ditch all my other spreadsheets and checklists, and just use this one. But, um, it didn’t quite go down like that. Now I have two of everything again.

Anyway, my point is that I have to be careful not to re-start a spreadsheet every time I find one. I’m down to about two right now, and that’s impressive for a person who usually has 10 (of which, 6 usually wouldn’t be getting any use).

I’m using Mrs. Meerkat’s Uber To Do List—thank you for that, Meerkat. That was VERY helpful, and I’m using a spreadsheet one of Mr. B’s cousins sent to us that has our guest list, budget, those sorts of things. The other thing I’m doing to keep my impulsive need to create another spreadsheet at bay is the dropbox. I learned about it from Miss Sloth and it’s so awesome! I’ve honestly never been my organized in my life.

Good thing, since this is such an important time in my life! It’s such an important time to be organized, too!

Do you use a lot of wedding-help tools and spreadsheets?

Do you have duplicates? Do you find them helpful?

“You’re so organized, you’re unorganized” are you my twin? lol. I too LOVE spreadsheets and would go insane if I lost my beloved spreadsheets…but I am totally unorganized otherwise!

I did use a wedding spreadsheet - I believe I downloaded it off of the ‘bee…it was “wedding tracker”

OMG, I think I have about 6 different wedding spreadsheets going too - yikes! I am also using Meerkat’s Uber-list, which is awesome, but I also have backups…and guest list, budget, vendors, blah blah blah….I’m hoping I’ll narrow it down closer to the actual day but maybe that’s wishful thinking!

Dropbox and Google Calendar…amazing! That’s literally the only way FI knows what’s going on! =)

We had a guest and budget spreadsheet. We used the guest one to keep track of contact info, RSVPs, gifts, and now it serves as our X-mas card list. I am glad my husband is organized and more tech savvy than I!

My hard drive crashed twice during the wedding planning process. If I had been wiser, I would’ve had all my spreadsheets locked on Google docs, saved on my desktop and printed out a hard copy. I only had them in one place, on my desktop, and I never backed any data up. Yeah. Trust me, you are smart, and the next time Mr. B tries to tell you about how disorganized you are in your disorganization, you can tell him about how I cried over my lost guest list + addresses. Twice.

If you have an Iphone or Ipad I found this super helpful guest list app called myGuestList. Its super easy to use and it exports to excel! It has been a life saver for me. I think this is the site that I found more info about it on http://www.zeode.com/myguestlist/.

Good Luck!
