Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

Ridiculous Registry Problems

December 18th, 2010 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

Before Mr. Cardigan and I had even thought about registering, I heard a few warnings against registering at certain places. One of those places was Target. From things being unavailable, to trouble returning items, to mysterious items being added, Target’s registry doesn’t really have the best reputation.

However, I love me some Target. It’s one of my favorite stores ever, and when it comes to a nice big chain store, I prefer it to Bed, Bath and Beyond or Macy’s. So, ignoring the warnings, we registered at Target.

Now, I’m not saying that I regret that choice. I love, love, love the items we’ve received off of our Target registry, and I love every item we have left on there. But let’s just say our Target registry hasn’t been the easiest thing to maintain.

Let me fill you in on the problems we’ve had so far.

1. Target changes their stock OFTEN. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but with an engagement as long as ours, it’s really hard to keep up with the constantly changing availability of the items we want. All in all, that’s understandable and not a huge problem. But it becomes really annoying when you compound it with our second gripe with Target…

2. The integration of the in-store registry and online registry is less than seamless. For example, Mr. Cardigan and I registered for a shower curtain in the store the first time we set up our registry. A few weeks later, I was looking at the registry online and realized that the shower curtain didn’t have a photo. I looked around on their website to see if it was available online and I found the exact same shower curtain, with a photo included. So, I just switched it out for that one.

The next time I checked it? There was a photo there but the shower curtain said in big red letters “Online Only”.

Target, you are a LIAR! I know for a fact it’s available in stores, as are many of the other items that our registry has marked as “online only.” It’s frustrating because many of our guests are shopping in the stores and assuming they can’t get these items, but they totally could if Target wasn’t such a dirty stinking liar.

3. I’ve also had the problem of random items appearing, although mine doesn’t have quite as easy of an explanation as Mrs. Buttons’ did. We registered (online) for a comforter for our extra bedroom, and the registry added not only the one we wanted, but also another completely random one (that we did not want). And, of course, the one we didn’t want was snatched up before we had a chance to delete it from the registry.

4. Target wants me to get multiples of some items on our registry. How do I know this? There are certain items that, no matter how many times people buy them for us, continue to appear as unfulfilled on our registry. I have finally gotten fed up with these items and deleted them, but not before I had to make many trips to the returns counter at our local Target.

But on the bright side? We have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with returns. That was the part of registering at Target that I was the most concerned about, but it’s been a total breeze! If we don’t have a gift receipt, they just have us print out the purchase log from the registry and take care of it right away. I’m glad we haven’t had any problems in this area, since our registry likes to not mark things as fulfilled!

Where are you registered? Did you have any problems with your registry?

I didn’t do in store registering, but I had no problems with Target. They did have some items that were discontinued during our 18 month engagement, but for the most part we had good luck. And I had no problems returning anything there. There were no mystery items, things got marked as fulfilled when purchased, and we didn’t end up with anything we didn’t want. Overall I was pleased. I wonder if it was easier for us because we didn’t register in store.

We’ve had some problems with our Macy’s registry. We received one item twice, because it didn’t get taken off the registry even though it was purchased online. We received some sets of china and one single bowl was in the wrong china pattern. Some of the gifts have come with cards and some just have the gift note on the packing slip.

On the way home from doing out Target registry (in-store), my fiance and I discovered that random BABY items had shown up on our list!! Had to hurry home to get online and remove them before any awkward conversations happened with our super-conservative families. :)

This makes sense. We bought a gift for a couple this summer and said it was unfulfilled on the registry, but they actually received 4 of the said gifts. Haha, oh well.

This sounds like a complete PITA! Target needs to shape up its registry system.

@Baconprincess: Haha - that is exactly what happened with us! Twice! My MOH called me up one day and asked me if there was something I wasn’t telling her…

@Baconprincess: This happened to my fiance and I too!! Thank goodness I was able to delete the baby items before any embarrassing phone calls!

We registered for plates and bowls and it said that it was out of stock…but it wasn’t! We found it in many stores! But I still love me some Target.

I think amazon’s universal registry is still the easiest. You download a button into your web browser, then you can go to any shopping site and click on that button to add to your registry.

We have a Target registry too and I’ve had the same problems with the “Online Only” on things that are also in the stores.

That’s the only real issue that I’ve had so far, we are also registered at Pampered Chef and Think Geek and have not had any issues with those.

We actually created and then later deleted a registry at Target because their return process was such a pain in the ass … they make you jump through hoops to return things in store that were purchased off your registry!

Bed Bath and Beyond, however, and Williams-Sonoma, and Crate and Barrel, have had great customer service so far.

wow we registered at Target but never had any of these issues! I also had never heard about them til now. I also tried “registering” at Anthropologie and really wish they had an official registry tool on their website! I created a wish list which sort of works but if you think Target changes their assortment too often, it’s nothing compared with Anthro. Stuff I really really wanted kept going out of stock, it sucked.
@rosesandhydrangea: you can register at Think Geek??? No way! I wish I had known that lol!

We have a registry at target and we had some issues after registering in the store. They told us to make sure we scanned the upc on the actual item and not the one on the shelve. When we got home and looked at the registry and edited it -because we registered at Macy’s too, there were items on there that I had no idea what they were. They didn’t even have a picture, so I’m assuming one of us mistakenly scanned the upc on the shelve. I had no idea that there were any other issues with target. I love target!

we registered at depositagift.com and it has worked out really well. the customer service is excellent and you don’t have to worry about any returns or wonky things with the registry itself. we liked that we could show our guests how we would spend the gift money without having to commit to anything today. we are just too transient and didn’t want to have to put everything in storage or return it. we mostly registered for experiential stuff like date nights and honeymoon excursions. but since we do know that we’ll buy a home in a few years, we also registered for some furniture that people could contribute towards. it’s been perfect.

I had a lot of problems with the Target registry re: things going out of stock, low inventory, picture disappearing, etc. also. Endless trips to Target ensued - it was magical ;)

We had no problems with target but- we had BIG problems with Macys. They discontinued my China pattern 4 months after i registered and 6 months before my wedding- which was a major brand name and advertised on their website and registry literature ( so not a small , little known or unpopular brand) and I already had several pieces purchased . I had to change my pattern and now have pieces from two sets. UGH. l have been able to return them, but still a hassle.

We did have some trouble with a return, but the problem had several parts…first, I regretted registering for a cheaper vacuum than the one I really wanted. Had I picked the one I wanted in the first place, none of this would’ve happened…

We went to return it and were told we needed to print the “Purchase log” from one of their in-store computers b/c they needed to scan the code on it and couldn’t use the regular registry, however the site was down (they were updating it for Xmas) and we couldn’t print it…they were also telling us that normally you can’t make a return over $300 (I believe b/c we had no receipt or gift receipt, plus it was an online purchase). Eventually one of the managers called a number and got a code for it and returned it for us. She was super-nice about it even though we didn’t buy another vacuum there (found it cheaper elsewhere during Black Friday deals), and she gave us a gift card for the amount that was paid for it (this is apparently why they needed the purchase log–so that they can tell when it was purchased/what the person paid for it, in case it was on sale, which ours was).

Overall, I’d do the registry at Target again, that was really our only issue. I’d just pick the right vacuum!
