Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. A Stand Worth Taking?

December 20th, 2010 @ 6:41 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

I was talking to Mr. Pancakes about cakes the other day and trying to drag an opinion out of him. As usual, I had about 15 tabs open on my browser, and I asked him to come take a look.

This is the cake I showed him (which I happen to love).

To my surprise (and horror), he said he hated cake stands. Well, his exact words were, “That cake is fine, but I don’t like that thing it’s on. Would it have to be like that?”

I kind of hate when this happens. I really wasn’t trying to trap him; I hadn’t even thought about the cake stand. I was really just trying to get his opinion on the cake, and the thing is, I adore vintage pedestal cake stands. They are so precious and really complete the image of my perfect wedding cake. Am I crazy? Are they weird??

If we were having a huge 200-person wedding, I would not dream of putting that cake on a stand, but we’re not. We’re having a small, intimate wedding, and I think that a smaller cake deserves (needs) to be put on a pedestal so it can get the attention it deserves.

What do you think of vintage cake stands? How much thought have you put into what your cake will sit on?

You are definitely not crazy, though I definitely got the same look from my MIL the other day when I told her my affinity for cake plates. She asked if I was planning on going into the cake business because I would have to put “something” on them. Who says it has to be cake? They are gorgeous on their own!

Love the cake stand look. The green milk glass with hobnail is super sweet.

Your green cake is one of my favorites! (thank you for the source, I could not find it online since I rename all my inspiration images.)

Cake stands are SUPER adorable! But I will admit we stood our cake in the plastic container it came in I think as brides we have a right to think of all the little details!

I love cakestands. I always think cakes look a little weird without something pretty to sit on.

Let’s just say that I’m not having cake, but I’m still stocking up on cakestands for the pies!

LOVE LOVE LOVE cake stands. Unfortunately, every baker I met with said that the cake would be too big and heavy to use one :-( Boo!

Love cake stands! I’m hoping to be able to make a few (an overturned teacup or cocktail glass and a vintage plate glued together can work pretty well) or borrow them from older co-workers for our cake buffet.

Those cake stands are really cute!

Have you thought of asking him what HE would put the cake on? My DH seems to have the same issue: no real opinions…only negative ones. I’ve found that it’s easier to ask “what would you do?” At least then you can see/hear what he’s thinking. WHY doesn’t he like the cake stand, etc.

I put some thought into it…we decided on a vintage family silver-plated cake stand (we were also serving a small cake…it happened to be a British fruit cake). DH didn’t want to serve cake at all, so this was a bit of a victory.

I love the cake stands! Maybe you can sell him on them. They are too cute to pass up. :)

He might change his mind. Ask what he hates about it, or maybe even get one, place a cake on it in your house, and see how he reacts!

I like ArwenBride’s idea of asking what he’d like to use instead. Maybe he’ll come up with something just as cool. Maybe not. I think it’s a detail that I’d give in about, though, if he feels that strongly about it. I care about so many more details than my fiance does that when he does have an opinion on something, I tend to let him have that particular point.

For me personally, I’m slightly in the no-cake-stand camp. I don’t think they’re bad looking and some are quite cute, but they don’t make me jump and squeal with joy and I tend to like the overall look of cakes a little more without them.

I love cake stands! We’re having a cake bar, and I can’t wait to start finding stands for all of our cakes to sit on…

The stands in the second-to-last picture are amazing!

If there is one thing I am sure I want for my cake it is definitely the stand. Like you, I’m having a small wedding so I’ll have a fairly small cake and the stand will pretty much make it’s entire look. I don’t know what I would do if I was in your situation! Maybe go for a more modern, simpler, smaller one that doesn’t call out his attention so much? Good luck!
