Mrs. Jam's Picture
Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

This may be the only time you’ll catch me saying this, but you know what? I think Abercrombie & Fitch really know what they’re doing. And specifically, I mean the smell of Fierce cologne as it assaults your olfactory glands as you walk by their store.

No matter what you buy from A&F, it smells like Fierce when you wear it. I even have an old A&F paper bag that I swear still reeks of Fierce years later. And then sometimes you’re out dancing with your girlfriends in a crowded bar, and all of a sudden, you smell it: someone is wearing FIERCE. That connection is instantly made.

Whether or not you judge that 30-year-old guy for still smelling like an Abercrombie employee is entirely up to you.

You know the old song and dance about smells: they bring back memories, make you think of other things, remind you of ex-boyfriends and the smell inside your friend’s first car. Personally, the smell of Candy Apple lotion from Bath & Body Works takes me back to high school…secretly, I have a small bottle stashed away so I can sniff it when I’m feeling really nostalgic. Weird?

Anyhoodle, some gals use this to their advantage at their weddings, buying a special kind of perfume and dousing themselves in it on their big day. I’ve even heard of brides who bust out that same special wedding scent on anniversaries, thus cementing the smell of their union—at least in their minds…er, noses—for all eternity.

But why stop there? What if your whole wedding was scent themed? What, you think I’m talking crazy? Aha, joke’s on you!

Recently, Mr. Jam and I went to St. Louis for a long weekend and stayed in a Westin Hotel. Oh, you’ve been to one, too? Then I’m sure you remember the White Tea Aloe scent that followed you around everywhere: white tea diffusers, candles, body lotion, shampoo, soaps, potpourri…the list could go on. It was everywhere, people. And now when I smell white-tea anything, I’m transported back to the Westin.

And you know what? I like it.

So imagine if you chose a “signature scent” for your wedding but didn’t stop at perfume. Instead, you infused it into the whole day, from bridal party to guests, and then whenever someone smelled it, they were instantly reminded of your joyous, smell-good wedding?!

SMELLS like a good idea to me.

Let’s do an example scenario, shall we? In this scent:

(source)

Yes, my friends. That is Lip Smackers in Vanilla Frosting flavor. Don’t ask me how many tubes of this I went through from 1999–2003.

So we have a theme: vanilla frosting. Let’s start with candles.

Now you may think that big honkin’ jar candles don’t really have a place in dainty, beautiful wedding-day decor, and you know what? I don’t completely disagree with you. And that’s why you need these:

Am I right or am I right? Yes, you need these scattered around your hypothetical tablescapes in vanilla-frosting scent for your vanilla-frosting-themed wedding. And if you’re feeling crafty, you could totally DIY it…but having never attempted candle making, I can’t promise that journey to be an easy one.

Moving on to personal scents for you and your ladies (and guys…rough elbows don’t discriminate):

Meet the Dylan’s Candy Bar Body Smoothie, which is just so darn cute. Obviously, you can find scented lotion anywhere, but you know that “Oooh…I’m huggin’ on this person and they smell so delicious” feeling? You can totally be that person. And so can your guests:

Delicious smells for all! Hows about chunky, homemade, vanilla-scented soap in the bathroom? Or better yet—gasp!—as wedding favors?

Awesome favor-packaging inspiration from a shop that has since closed

So there you have it—the beginnings of a scent-infused day. Vanilla frosting is pretty common, so imagine all the more unique possibilities: vanilla lavender, wildflower honey, cedarwood lime…the list could go on and on.

What’s the verdict? Is this something you would consider, or do you think it would be just too much smellovertaking the day? Anybody else obsess over certain scented memories the way I seem to do? It’s storytime…do share!

That’s a really neat idea! I’ve been thinking about the buying-a-wedding-perfume thing, but my problem is…. scents make me sneeze. Can’t stand scented candles, can’t stand overpowering soap, can’t stand other people near me wearing copious amounts of perfume, can’t walk through the perfume area of the Bay without tearing up. So I guess it is scentless for me! I’m still holding out hope that I find some magical perfume that doesn’t make me sneeze though.

I haven’t always been this scent-scroogy though! For me, Calgon’s Hawaiian Ginger means high school. AND I used to make scented candles in teacups and sell them at craft fairs! Easy peasy! You just need a double boiler (make sure that the inner part is something you will only use for wax after this though), a big chunk of paraffin, and some wicks. Oh, and essential oils.

I love the idea (and I loooooove vanilla), but I can think of two problems. First, not everyone loves the same scents, and some, like Miss Cinnamon above, are allergic. Second, I wouldn’t want anything scented where the food was going to be. I don’t think most scents go very well with dinner, however nice they might be with dessert.

Oooooh, I love this. It’s definitely a fun debate. I was thinking of putting scented candles out but, of course, I was thinking of doing a lot of things that didn’t end up happening :) I bought Mr. G a special scent so that I could associate him with our special day, as well as wearing my signature scent.

I wonder if Miss Lioness will chime in here - b/c all of the resorts at Disney World pump in specific odors depending on which resort you are at. I think this is a fabulous idea! I love lilacs and my wedding is in the Spring - that would be a good ’signature’ scent!

Oh,my! I absolutely love that idea! I was thinking about having a ton of flowers with a pretty distinct smell (lilies?)but candles could work too. And guest soaps as favor? Love it!

I thought of doing something similar, but like pp’s have noted, was scared off by the idea of guests being allergic or having it become TOO overpowering. I will be putting one of those oil diffuser thingys in the bathrooms, though.

Ooh, I used to work at Abercrombie and the scent back then was 8! I love it, but you’re totally right it is all over everything and I can recognize it anywhere :)

Love this. You crack me up with your randomness! Vanilla is a great scent to use as an example. You have started the wheels turning in my head.

This is so perfect! I was juts thinking about scents for the day. I may relegate the scented candles to the bathrooms though. Loving the teacup candles!!

I love this. Although I would have to keep it toned down because of the allergy issue, I could totally see doing a light, faint scent in several places. Scent is my strongest memory!

I love the idea for the ceremony (if the area is well-aired), but I would advise against scents during dinner. Scented candles never make me want to eat food.

Awesome idea! But I wouldn’t have them on the tables during dinner-scented candles can really really compete with food and make it unappealing.

I loved that lip gloss as well!

It’s actually how my best friend and I met.

And more on topic, I love this idea. I too am brought back to specific moments by smells and this seems like a great way to be brought back to your wedding day. Whether on purpose or randomly.

Um…I still use Lip Smackers and I’m 26 years old. It’s strictly private-in-bathroom gloss…but it’s cheap and stays! I will buy it as long as they make that dang stuff! ;)
