Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

Even though lots of our wedding details are, ahem, up in the air (to say the very least), there is one thing we thought we had nailed down: The glorious honeymoon.

Mr. Jam and I had it in our heads that we wanted to spend a few weeks traveling around the lovely United States on a road trip of sorts. Europe would be terrific, but why go out of the country when there is so much deliciousness in our continental backyard?

He constantly talked about Yellowstone National Park and nature (which I was shockingly excited about), and I have been living my whole life wanting to visit the Southwest, specifically New Mexico. And I also have been sort of dying to make a stop at a sustainable community, or go to Burning Man, or sit on some rocks on the Pacific coast and gaze stoically into the water as the sun sets and dolphins and whales jump under rainbows. And then the cast of The OC throws us a beach bonfire and we snuggle up in sweatshirts and quilts and listen to some hippie playing acoustic guitar until the sun comes up.

In short, Mr. Jam and I wanted adventure and exploration, not relaxation and all-inclusiveness. And what better way to travel the US than in a rented RV or trailer?!

It also fills the need of a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom AND has the wheels to get us everywhere. Unfortunately, Mr. Jam had to get all logical (…typical) and bring up the fact that the cost of gas will outweigh any savings. And renting the RV itself will be pricey.

Translation: We would have to wait a few months after the wedding to go on the honeymoon. Whatever.

But then some new developments happened in recent weeks: First, we found out that some of our best friends are hankering to go on a BFF getaway cruise in late February/early March-ish to somewhere warm with tropical drinks in coconuts. Clearly, we don’t want to be the odd ducks out, and clearly we don’t want to miss out on the shenanigans that are sure to happen.

However, if we were to go on this trip with the friends, it would likely count as the honeymoon. Before the wedding.

And then on top of that, Mr. Jam just called me literally 10 minutes ago and told me he found a no-expiration Las Vegas hotel special, and for $99 it includes a weekend suite, a Visa gift card, and some gambling chips, which I am sure to love because I pretend to know roulette. And what does my typically analytical, perpetually researching, look-before-he-leaps groom-to-be do?

He buys the special. Surprise! Looks like we’re going to Vegas at some point.

So the question is, when to go on the honeymoon? And even more importantly, where to honeymoon? My ideal scenario: Go on the BFF getaway cruise in March, get married in June, head to Vegas for a long weekend after, and then do our adventurous road trip the following year.

Sure, it’s a lot to think about, but let me tell you that just one short week ago I was damning our mortgage, complaining that we don’t travel enough, and swearing that my womb will remain barren until we go on some trips and not waste our younger years.

And now look: We have ourselves three possible trips to plan in the coming months. Praise the Law of Attraction or attribute it to the borderline-new-age chanting I’ve been doing since my little I-want-to-vacation-or-die sob fest, whatever. Something worked.

Would you dare go on a pre-wedding honeymoon just three months before your wedding? Or is the whole purpose of honeymoon a post-wedding ritual I shouldn’t mess with? If we indeed do the friends cruise in March-ish, do you think a post-wedding getaway is absolutely necessary, even if it’s just for a few days?

Pardon me, I have some trips to plan. Egads.

We’ve just got back from our pre-wedding-moon and it was FABULOUS. If the trip fits your budget & life schedule, why not? It’s just as special. And if you’re so inclined, you can take a few days break somewhere fabulous after the wedding too. Double the fun! :D

I say join your friends as a last hurrah and then head to Vegas for a post-wedding trip with your hubby. Both sound like so much fun it would kill me to have to say no to either. Good luck deciding what to do!

PS- I die thinking of the Southwest too!

Girllllllll Mr. Octo and I are intense road-trip enthusiasts. I have lots and lots and lots of great Southwestern destinations to recommend, AND we took a glorious ten-day cross-country road trip two years ago which had basically the perfect itinerary. If you do decide to go at some point in the future, hit me up, I’m your girl ;)

I vote you go for it! I’m all about traveling as much as possible, so if you’re able to, you should go on a trip with your friends and then go to Vegas after the wedding! Why the hell not?! :)

FI and I are doing a 5 week cross-country road trip for our honeymoon! We are hiking/camping enthusiasts, so we are hitting up about 7 National Parks and camping there (between $5 and $20 a night) and then in between parks, we will stay at B&Bs or a hotel to rest and freshen up! We are so excited. If you want to know our itinerary, let me know!!! And all those other trips sound FAB!

I think a pre-wedding honeymoon is a fantastic idea! It will give you and Mr. Jam a chance to step away from the wedding and just enjoy yourselves in good company. :)

We had a pre-wedding honeymoon in Thailand and it was great. Now I’m not saying this will happen to you guys, but Mr. G and I had a couple times when we were seriously ticking each other off during the month of the wedding, so it was nice to think about our time on a Thai beach when I was bitching at him about crafts and he was telling me I wasn’t being specific enough about anything..

Do it all, if you can! We don’t have time on our side, so we aren’t going on a honeymoon right away, but we are planning an epic trip to Argentina for our 1st anniversary. Before that, we’ll probably take a trip after about 6 months, but mostly we’re just saving up for Argentina.

Lots of fun stuff in your future!!

My DH and I discussed going on our honeymoon before the wedding. We were planning a ski/snowboard trip to Whistler and the weather would have been better the month before our April wedding.

But we decided it against it. And I’m so glad we did. There is nothing like that schmoopy “just married” feeling right after the wedding.

Sounds like a plan to me! Take the BFF trip and recharge. Use Vegas as a fun after the wedding honeymoon. And then road trip for your anniversry. Love it!
