Sewn Together: Line Dancing

December 21st, 2010 @ 4:50 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Dim the lights and pump up the bass—it’s dancing time!

But first, here’s what you need to know about awkward people like us: we only dance to group or line dances.

So go ahead and pop a blood vessel at the thought—but about 80% of the songs during the dancing portion of our reception were line/group dances.

I think we played every song imaginable: Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Macarena, YMCA, and some I hadn’t even heard of before. Cringing yet? The only one we didn’t play was the chicken dance, and only because Mr. Sew put it on the “do not play list” along with Soulja Boy.

The Macarena was popular with the men, oddly.

Luckily, the dancers in the crowd didn’t mind the overload of line dances, and the awkward dancers like us joined in on the fun. As “uncool” as line dances may be, I guarantee people will get up and boogie when they play. It’s like shouting the lines of your favorite movie out with the rest of the crowd during a special showing—you just can’t help it!

All better.

Much later in the evening one of our friends thought it would be funny to do a Rick Roll (I know, it’s old, yeah yeah), so he requested it of our DJ. Of course, it’s only natural to start a conga line, because if we’re going to be cheesy dancers, we might as well go all out.

And it was fun—more fun than I thought dancing could be, seeing as we never do it and didn’t even want to have dancing at all. We were skeptical when Mr. Sew’s parents insisted on a DJ, but it wasn’t the empty, awkward dance floor that I was scared of. Not at all.

We ended with Flash Dance. Just a tad bit random.

This is awesome. It doesn’t matter what type of music you play as long as people have fun. I’m glad you enjoyed your dancing. And I’ve loved reading your recaps!

I actually think it’s a good way to ensure that everyone’s comfortable with being on the dance floor - cheese aside!

Again, your brother is CUTE!!

That first picture is classic! Looks like dancing was a fun time, how did everyone know how to do all the line dances?

I am so happy that you posted the name of the Cupid Shuffle. I was at a wedding this summer, and EVERYONE knew that dance but me. I didn’t even know the name of it. Now I can be informed.

I think it awesome that you were able to get everyone dancing. As much as people hate the line or group dance, I think it’s the time that I see the most people out dancing in real weddings. We have a couple on our must play list!

I LOVE line dances! So much pre-coreoragraphed fun! Plus, it helps people who, like me, aren’t natural dancers boogie on the dance floor. However, I started to get wedding-blog fever and read over and over again how “un-cool” line dancing is and how trendy brides should always put pre-coreographed songs on the DJ’s forbidden list. I read this so often I started to believe it.

But then, I went to my work Christmas party. The first few fast songs no one danced. Two or three couples danced the third slow dance, and then the Cha-Cha Slide got everyone on their feet. The floor was bumping during the YMCA and everyone screamed with excitement when the Cupid Shuffle came on. Line dances just make people dance.

And my fiance said we HAVE to have the chicken dance. So, you’re still cooler than me there… ^^*

I don’t think there has been a picture of your sister YET that hasn’t made me chuckle out loud at her sassy tween attitude.

I am loving your sister’s face in that third picture! Also, holy crap, how tall is your brother? Or is everyone else just reaaally short? He looks like a giant in some of those photos!!!

Also, I’m totally in the “No dance!” camp. I’m using my super small wedding as an excuse because, seriously, when there’s 12 people (or something like that - we’re aiming for tiny) what are the chances of very many people dancing? Maybe at the at-home reception, though.

I hope the dancing at our wedding is half as fun as yours looks. It made me want to dance at my desk…too bad my co-workers would give me dirty looks.
