Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

What’s Your “Thing”?

December 22nd, 2010 @ 6:15 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

Gift registries: they may seem innocent, but in actual fact, they are more like a minefield cleverly disguised beneath a bazillion gift-wrapped gadgets and gizmo’s.

Making the final decision as to where we’re going to create registries has been harder than we anticipated, particularly because our options are a little limited down under. All the traditional big name registries that most of my North American friends frequent don’t apply here—but we do have one fairly big department store called Myer where the majority of couples are content to go zap-happy with the scanner. I feel like they have a monopoly on wedding registries and don’t really shop there on a regular basis, so we’re considering shopping around and creating our registry somewhere a little bit different.

If I’m being completely honest, we don’t even really know what we want to put on our registry.

We’re in that fairly typical modern conundrum of living together before the wedding and being in the process of purchasing and building our own home—so we’re not really in the market for a great deal of your traditional white-goods and furnishings. We don’t want a honeymoon fund or a cash fund, but we are thinking of having some kind of donation or charity option if people decide to go that way. Gifts are such a small part of the day itself, but I want to make sure that our bases are covered in case people do ask questions about generously providing them for us.

Putting all that aside though…there is one thing that I’m craving for and secretly lusting after. It’s also the most expensive item that I can think of, which is why I feel guilty for even considering putting it on our so-far-non-existent registry. What do you think it might be?

Well, if you randomly guessed a KitchenAid, you’d be correct.

I adore them. I have these epic dreams of attaching one permanently to our kitchen bench and suddenly becoming a domestic goddess overnight, all thanks to owning one of those babies. While we were travelling in North America, I even hunted down a Wal-Mart and hoofed it on foot {about a 40 minute walk} to purchase one over there and bring it back to Australia with us. I almost got there too, and I had it in my hands ready to go, until my very clever dad warned me to check and make sure the voltage was comparable between the countries. It wasn’t. I was gutted. So close, but yet so far!

Mr. Jaguar doesn’t quite ‘get’ my fascination with wanting one and the price alone is enough for him to veto it off the registry consideration list. I think for now I’m going to keep on dreaming about baked goods and maybe, just maybe, I’ll splurge on one for myself after the wedding.

Did you have something random that you were secretly hoping you’d receive as a wedding gift?

Ooh we registered for this really amazing (and expensive) juicer. We’re both really hoping some of our friends go in on it together or something.

We registered for a kitchen-aid. Our thoughts were at least if no one buys it for us, we’ll get 20% off after the wedding (many stores do this). Well. We didn’t just get a kitchen-aid. We got TWO!!

We ended up selling the second one to my FH’s brother. Crazy world!

@emilygrace07: Fingers crossed for you! My mum won us a pretty cool fruit juice extractor (it’s in a HUGE box!) but is saving that gift for the kitchen tea, so I can’t use it yet. ;)

@afbacher: Omgosh, SO lucky! That’s a good point re: putting it on the registry for the completion discount. If only KA’s weren’t so ridiculously OVERPRICED in Australia!!

Is amazon used much down under? Their registries are great!!! You can rate items, and most exciting is that you can get an “add to registry” button which lets you add stuff to your registry from ANY website, amazing! highly recommend!!

I felt really really weird about registering. The whole people buying me gifts thing is strange. Even though I don’t think twice about buying someone else a wedding gift and am more than happy to.

But!….I didn’t even think I wanted to register for china but I absolutely feel in love with a pattern and am hoping with everything I can that someone buys some of it for us. I just adore it with my whole heart.

Keep us updated on where you’re registering. I’ve had a look at Myer and David Jones, but they feel like such a rip off. You can just see the hefty mark up they add to everything instore >.< But I have a feeling I’ll end up registering there, as I haven’t found any other Australian stores that have registries.

I wish there was an Australian version of Amazon Universal Wish List, but then, I’ve been surprised at the paucity of decent online shops in Australia too. What’s a bride to do?

Seeing as you’re doing up your house why don’t you add Bunnings or Mitre 10 Mega (or whatever the Aussie equivalent is) as an option? My finacee and I had our formal engagement parties recently (one on the North Island where I am from and one in the South Island where he is from) and we asked for Resene Paint vouchers or Mitre 10 Vouchers and we are using these to do up our home.

It might work for you :)

Oh how I crave me a KitchenAid… I almost bought one in the US too - they were only $350 USD which even with freight to get it home that only works out to be about $600 NZD. To buy a KA in NZ would cost over $900 NZD!!!!!!!

@Duckienz we’re haven’t registered but we’ve asked for Harvey Norman or Farmers vouchers so we can hopefully buy a new lounge or dining suite!

We will probably have 2 registries, Myer or DJs and somewhere like General trader, or Bed Bath and Table. We live right near Chadstone shopping centre in Melbourne, so there are heaps of boutique shops that do registries now.

Also, not sure if I’ve mentioned how excited I am to have an Aussie bee to follow!!

@Hard Hat Purple Boots: Yah, I’m not a big Myer/DJ’s kind of girl!

@Duckienz: Awesome idea - we’re actually leaning towards gift vouchers in a different store, but great minds think alike. :)

@Kemma: Boo to expensive Kitchen Aids down in the Southern Hemisphere. I wonder if they know how big a market they would have if they branched out here competitively?

@Roux: Aw, thanks! I’m loving the Aussie following on the ‘Bee, gotta keep spreading the love! :) Love the idea of having a smaller, boutique registry. Let me know how that goes for you!

I was so lucky to receive one as a joint gift from my lab! It was prob one of my favorite most sought after gifts and I am still overwhelmingly grateful for it!

OMG I love staring and drooling over the beautiful colors at the local Macys. I can’t decide between the Tiffany Blue and the Steel Silver colors. Yikes!
I did however hear of another one on Martha’s Holiday Baking show yesterday - the Breville - so I’m adding that to my mental list for research before I start registering. If anyone has any info on comparisons send them my way :D

Dude, put it on there! Expensive stuff is what registries are for. Someone doesn’t have to get it for you, but a few people could go in on one for you.

We have similar feelings toward registries. We move a lot and live in small apartments, so we can’t store a bunch of stuff yet, but we’ll probably register at a kitchen store like Sur la Table because we do love to cook and could use some quality cookware. But I’m all about the honeymoon registry because it’s the only way we’re going to have a honeymoon.
