Wedding Priorities (and Cake)

December 22nd, 2010 @ 8:14 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Eight years with a scientist is chipping away at me. I’m usually a “go with your gut feeling!” and “trust your instincts!” type, whereas J goes for anything quantifiable and Excel spreadsheet importable. And somehow, now, so do I. Which explains why I created this:

Wedding Priorities (and Cake) : wedding cake cincinnati Wedding02 wedding02

OK, 11 was a joke.

The rest are real, and my priorities look something like this:

Higher range

  • Photographer 10
  • Really great photographer 8
  • Food 10
  • Really delicious food 9
  • Really delicious cake 8
  • Music 9
  • Really great music 8

Mid-range

  • Specialty linens 7
  • Photobooth 5
  • Passed appetizers 4
  • Videographer 5

Low-range

  • Ornate invite suite 3
  • Huge, tiered cake 1
  • Specialty chairs 1

Not only does this give you a better idea of where your budget should be allotted, but it also highlights discrepancies. Here’s an example:

  • Really delicious cake 8
  • Huge, tiered cake 1

I have no interest in an ornate fondant cake. I have a LOT of interest in how delicious and creamy and buttery-sweet the cake is. This discrepancy lead us in a different direction, cake wise. A little more like this:

or these:

How do you figure out your priorities? Have you found that some items rank higher/lower than you expected?

Miss PD (or as I like to call you Miss P-Diddy Combs!) I LOVE this idea! I have SO many ideas that I am debating whether or not to include - for example rented overlays and napkins, chair covers or chair rentals, a billions different ideas for favors, adding specific appetizers, adding live music during cocktail hour, etc, etc, etc. I think that that writing all of this down and prioritizing will really help!

@vtbride2010: HAHA- i’m totally going to refer to myself as PDiddy, haha

@photographernico: yeah…i’ve never quite understood the draw, but it’s probably that i already like our venue’s chairs?

OOooo I LOVE THIS THING!!! I totally need to steal it, and implement it quick! Even though it would have probably been a good thing to have a few months back! Darnit! Oh and haha chairs for me are 10, but it’s cause I don’t like our venue’s chairs. Boo! I think I’m going to have to scale that down to like an 8. ANYWAY! LOVE THIS THING! Genius!

This is a great idea! I guess I subconsciously ranked some of these things, but I like methodology of actually writing it out. I would have ranked ornate invitation suite a 2 or 3 as well, and seeing as how much money invitations can cost, I just decided to go a less-expensive route.

Love it! I think I’ve spent way too much time agonizing on some number 1-3 items.

We didn’t sit down and number things, but we did make lists in groups of how important things were to us. For the really important, we did everything we could to budget for them. For the less important, many things fell away.

The first wedding book I read told me to rank my priorities. . . it didn’t work well when I thought everything was equally as important! haha!

Now the most important are photos and invitations and I’m A-OK with that!

For us most important were food, pictures, then venue. After that they get listed down like center peices, DJ, video etc.

This is a good tool and I am so with the future MR. on spread sheets I love them

My friend sat us down and had each of us name one must have item for the wedding. Then together we came up with the “gotta haves” and the “can do withouts”.

Mmmm, caaaaake. My priorities are pretty much arranged by budget, but in the beginning, we did do a similar thing for both of our wants and gave the things we both really wanted priority. Our guest list is more broken down like this.
