Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Looking for the Kindness of Strangers

December 22nd, 2010 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Hippo

Hive, I have a problem. I’ve been searching high and low for something, and I can’t find it for the life of me. I’ve asked you for wedding advice before, but this is a little more serious. I need a tie. This tie to be exact:

Sean John Satin Tonal Stripe tie

If you remember from this post, we decided to have the guys wear their own black suits. We found ties we liked on sale at Macy’s in a perfect shade of navy to match the bridesmaids dresses. But…we are short one tie, and I can’t find it anywhere. Four Macy’s in four different cities and a ton of online searching, and I still can’t find the one missing tie. I’m running into a couple of major problems:

  1. The ties were on sale ’cause apparently Macy’s is trying to get rid of them. Once they’re gone, they’re gone and they won’t be ordering any more.
  2. Macy’s can pull a list of stores that have the tie, but I learned the hard way that the SKU for the tie is the same SKU that’s used for all ties of the same style, regardless of the color. So, while I’m looking for the navy striped tie, the computer system might say the Macy’s in New York City has six of that tie in stock. What the computer doesn’t say is that two of them are green, two are yellow, one is purple and one is red. I can’t actually figure out if the store has navy in stock unless I call or go in person.
  3. I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried to call a department store’s tie department to locate a particular tie, but it’s a next to impossible and extremely frustrating process. And trying to do it during the holiday season? Forget it.

So, hive…If you just happen to be in a Macy’s looking for that last minute Christmas tie, and you just happen to see a Sean John satin tonal stripe tie in navy blue (there’s a royal blue one too…and although the photograph makes the tie look more royal, it is definitely navy), hit me up!

In case you need a close-up:

Other than hitting up the hive, does anyone else have any brilliant ideas for finding this tie? I’m desperate!

Wish I could help you out - we don’t even HAVE a Macy’s in Sydney. *sob* Maybe you should hit up P.Diddy himself to help you locate your missing tie.

I think Miss Jaguar got it on the nose - you need to call up Diddy and put in a special request!! If I am in a Macys over the next few weeks I will definitely keep my eye out for the tie!!!

Just a thought…. they have very similar ties at Kohls (a different brand but same satin stripe)…

I suggest taking your ties to a Kohls and finding its mate… Just worth a try

I feel your pain because I went the through the exact same process with the exact same tie but in the champagne color in July. I lucked out though when one of the not too distant Macy’s had it. Good luck.

If you have a Burlington Coat Factory in your area, I would check them out. They carry a lot of Sean John stuff, at least at the one here. Also, outlet stores! I have had great success finding discontinued items at outlet stores.

And this may be the WORST thing to ask, but what about the Best Man wearing a slightly different tie, to stand out?

This is SIMILAR, but not quite the same: http://boardroomties.com/dotrne24.html

Good luck!!!

Ya’ll are awesome!!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone somewhere can find it!

@Kim: Argh! No Kohl’s in New York City… sadly.

@Jlock: And I definitely saw the champagne ones… too funny! Hopefully I will have the same kind of luck you did!

Did Macy’s do a company wide search for you? They might be able to order it directly from another Macy’s or hopefully tell you who has some backstock, good luck!

if it comes down to you can’t find the tie, then maybe the best man can wear something slightly different from the groomsmen and you can have something that matches the best man with the MOH

I just did a google search for every possible place that could sell them… Amazon had every color BUT navy… I’ll try to get to a Macy’s soon to check it out for you.

Umm… you guys are seriously awesome!

@4everdecember: Yes, the Harold Square Macy’s. They had other colors, but not navy.

@rheabee80: Yep… they did a company wide search, but it’s only by the sku number… which doesn’t say which color it is. So there’s literally no way to tell from their computer system which color is really at which store.

SKU number is 756500737242

Thank you, hive!

Oh wow, I will go to the Macy’s in downtown Philly to take a look. Did you try looking online as well? I will look a few places. If I find it in Philly tomorrow I will PM you and we’ll find a way to make sure you get it. I had a similar situation for a non wedding related affair, so I completely understand.

Idea: Buy one similar but not the same tie, and let the best man wear it. Sets it apart just a wee bit, but still fits into the grand scheme of things.

If I lived in the US I’d definitely look around for you though :(
