Color it Fabulous

December 23rd, 2010 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Zebra

Heh hee he heh he he

That would be nervous Zebra laughter. Why would it be nervous Zebra laughter? Welp, because I’ve been hesitant to designate our wedding two colors. I just don’t get it. Why does a wedding have to be two colors …or any colors at all? Why do we assign our wedding a specific seat at the color table? I know, I know, it is so that the wedding looks cohesive. Here’s the deal though—not many people are going to notice. I can say right now with fair certainty that the heterosexual men at the wedding won’t know what color the napkins are. So…that’s 150 people I don’t have to worry about noticing the cohesiveness of the wedding. I jest.

Our wedding does have a color category which after taking a wrong turn on Google lane I realized was jewel toned. I had created a jewel toned wedding in the process of avoiding the color categorization process. I am not worrying too much about whether it is just the right shade of purple or not. I’m letting it take on its own life. I like mixing different bright colors, even if they are monochromatic bright colors.

Exhibit A:

I ran out of the lighter purple with one bouquet left to wrap. So, I used the darker one. I think it looks *awesome* in a badass sort of way.

Are you still wondering why I’m nervous laughing? It’s because some vendors expect a color theme as far as weddings go. I try to explain that we’re using very bright jewel toned colors but then I get those glazy eyes staring back at me like I didn’t actually answer their question. So, I’ve learned. I’ve adapted to use what I know to explain like Mrs. Skizzors and Mrs. Meerkat before me—I borrowed from my craft box. I hereby give you the Zebra wedding colors…IN FABRIC!

Do you have a “loose” color scheme? What is it?

Yay for a loose colour scheme. We gave up on two tones as well. I think all your colours look awesome together :)

That pink piece is raspberry, is it not? I am obsessed with it. And I love the way you combined it. Great choice!

Beautiful! We are going with a three color scheme with a theme behind it, but I love the “jewel-toned” theme. Oh aside from the red black and gold, we are also using peacock feathers, so I guess ours is kind of loose ;-) I don’t think you have to have any color scheme if you don’t want to! I am on offbeat bride tribe and there are couples whose color scheme is as vague as “bright colors” and they look AMAZING! Go with what you like, and you’re right-no one else will notice lol. I always try to remind myself of that as I agonize over these things :-)

Weddings definitely don’t have to be “two” colors! It can be as many as you want - it’s just a way to create a design scheme/vision.

Very pretty colors! I love jewel tones. Our colors are bright yellow and a golden yellow and blue…horizon, cobalt, sapphire blue. The yellows actually range from bright yellow to a darker yellow and everything in between.

Yep, we’re doing various light blues and greens, with a deep purple accent…so, while we’re trying to match the purple a little more closely, we’re pretty “whatever” about the blues and greens. Drives my mother NUTS.

@blanket: I’m not sure of the actual name of the color but raspberry just about hits the nail on the head.
@tiffinapit: The gold especially looks beautiful with the peacock feathers.

we’re doing jewel tones as well, with grey (bm dresses, gm ties) and my FI and I are the only ones with blue on (sash on my dress, his tie). i really LOVE color, so it was super hard for me to pick one.

Oh Thank Goodness, someone said it! I have not planned my own wedding, nor have I received a ring from my almost 4 year long boyfriend (and no I’m not bitter, YET!). But I have however helped out with a lot of weddings. I think I’ve actually been in 7 and help with 10 plus. Most recently I’m planning a New Years Eve wedding…2 days left…with lots of my DIY posted here in the hive. It is a 2 color wedding, however but she’s letting me use glitter, and I have glittered EVERYTHING, so I didn’t hound her about expanding the color choices. I always advise my brides others wise. I sit them down and explain to them they’re wedding colors do not have to be “two colors, that’s it, end of story, boring!” Two colors may be cohesive but its also a gag. PUKE! I suggest to them they pick out 3 or 4 colors that look pleasing together and let them know if they pick royal blue, it is completely expectable to use other complementing blues as well. I normally like to use the home decorating analogy. I ask if they think my house is well matched and cohesive. Yes it does. So why must your wedding a day you want to remember for the rest of your life get stuck in the two color box, like your bathroom. Yes I believe bathrooms have also been unfairly put in this same two color category that I like to refer to as a design nightmare. At my sisters southern wedding in North Carolina we used browns, purples, greens, yellows AND golds (to see pictures of this scheme go to http://eyecandycreationsdetroit.blogspot.com/2010/10/blog-post.html). That is a whopping total of 5 color families. Again I stress color families because it doesn’t have to be the same exact shade of brown or green through out. Deeper and lighter shades work well over all and make it a little easier on the eyes. So bees do as Mrs. Zebra did and expand the color dial. The world is not two dimensional, you and your Mr are not two dimensional, so why should your wedding be. But if you are afraid to step out side of the 2 Color Box play with the shades. It doesn’t all have to be just buttercup and tangerine.
