About Mrs. Trail Mix

Finally, An Album

December 27th, 2010 @ 5:48 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Before I got married, I never really understood what was so difficult about making an album. You pick out some photos, decide on a layout and badda bing, badda, boom, album done.

Um, yeah…not so much. It turns out, making an album really is as much of a b*tch as everyone says it is.

First of all, at least in my case, I was trying to narrow down 2,156 photos to about 60 or so. Friends, let me tell you, that is no easy task. I wanted to make sure we chose the best of the best, the photos which truly represented our wedding and where everyone has their eyes open and was smiling pretty. It took me almost a month just to choose the pictures!

Then I had to decide what kind of album I wanted to make (this one is for my parents, I’m sure ours will be a solid year or two coming). While our photographer seemed to offer competitively-priced albums, I just couldn’t come to terms with spending so much money so I decided to go the DIY route.

I ordered this beauty from Kate’s Paperie:

It’s hard to tell but the cover is actually crushed velvet with the image of baby’s breath etched into it. Dreamy.

I decided to go for a vintage look and used the old-fashioned picture-corner-holders (that’s a technical term, kids) like these:

Funny story about these photo corners: I could not, for the life of me, figure out how they got stuck onto the paper (and they did not come with instructions). I thought maybe I was supposed to peel off the back layer and it would be sticky but that didn’t work. Then I tried using a glue stick but that was messy. I finally went to Michael’s and bought glue dots but what a pain-in-the-arse that was. It wasn’t until I finally Googled the damn things that I realized you’re supposed to lick the back, like a stamp, and then they become sticky. Brilliant!

Anyways, once I had chosen the photos, uploaded them to Adoramapix, ordered the prints and received them in the mail, it was finally time to get cracking.

I organized the photos chronologically, then started arranging them on the pages, to see what would fit where. Once I finally had a layout done, I then used the photo corners to attach the photos to the pages. Since I’m kind of craft-challenged, I was certain there would be a major mishap or two but as luck would have it, other than a few uneven photos and poor arrangement choices, I actually managed to not screw it up! Will wonders never cease…

Once all the photos were in, there was one more DIY hurdle to overcome: the graphite transfer. I think it was that smarty-pants Mrs Dolphin who clued me into this technique. I wanted to add our names and wedding date to the front of the album but didn’t trust myself to free-hand it, so I tried this with greeeeeat success!

Here’s how I did it…

I printed out the text on regular computer paper (in the font I used for our programs, cuz I’m all coordinated and matchy-matchy like that, boo-yah!).

Crap, now you know our real names and wedding date…the secret is out!

Then I turned the paper over and used a pencil to trace over the print.

Finally, An Album : wedding albany albums diy Album005 Album+005

Once that was done, I flipped the paper back over, put it where I wanted the words to go on the actual album, and traced over the printed words with a pencil, thus transferring the pencil from the other side onto the album page.

Ha, note my creative use of my Martha Stewart Weddings magazine collection…and yes, I still buy them even though I’ve been married for over 6 months, shush!

Anyways, after tracing over the printed text with a pencil, I got a light outline on the album page:

All I had to do then was go over it with a fine-tipped marker. Here’s the results…

Finally, An Album : wedding albany albums diy Album008 Album+008

Finally, An Album : wedding albany albums diy Album009 Album+009

Pretty darn good, if I do say so myself!

It took me about two months and what felt like millions of hours of work to get this album finished but my mom’s face when she opened up her Hanukkah gift made it all worthwhile. It was so fun to look through it with my family and reminisce about our crazy, rainy, mad-cap wedding.

And folks, don’t hold your breath for a post about our own album because Lord knows when that will happen. I’m still toying with the idea of having a professional one made but it pains me to spend that kind of cash, so we’ll see what happens.

And to all you newlyweds out there, I’m curious to know, have you gotten albums made yet or did you slack like I did, overwhelmed with how to even begin? If you have an album, did you go the DIY route or have a professional do it?

Wow, it turned out beautifully. I love the crushed velvet with the etching of baby’s breath.

Oh, wow. I seriously might have to steal this album–my wedding colors were yellow and silver, and we used baby’s breath for our centerpieces. I die.
The weddding was over 5 months ago, and I put together a quick cheap album from Target just to get some pictures out on the coffee table. It’s really starting to bug me, though, how cheesy the album looks and I’ve been trying to come up with a better alternative that doesn’t break the bank. This album style has just become a top contender!

I really like your album! I love the photo corners!! I have been married 4 months and just made prints of some wedding photos on CHristmas Eve - and they werent even to hang in our house. So, no, I have not made an album - that will take me a while!

Was just talking about this earlier. We were thinking of doing our own album too, not spending 2k on some guy doing what I could do. Turned out great. Well done, it means more now too for you.

We made the decision to go through our photographers, and were immensely pleased with the job they did on our parent albums that we used as Christmas gifts for both sets of parents. They sent us a mock-up of the layouts for our own album, and it’s beautiful and wonderful, but it breaks my heart how many of our favorite photos aren’t included, simply because we have way way too many favorites to fit into one album. I’ve been putting off making the tough decisions necessary to get the thing finalized and off to the printer.

Turned out great! I think it’s funny how everyone does their parent’s albums first :) Me too, it seems less daunting. For sure, I think it’s almost as much work the wrap up a wedding as to plan one!

I recommend going the semi-DIY route. Design the album yourself but have it printed by a company. I’m going to use Picaboo. It just so happens that they have a deal going on today on Portland’s groupon where you can get a $100 gift card for only $35. That allows you to (almost) get the really nice flush mount Madison album! http://www.groupon.com/r/uu2351803

Also, I had made parent albums using Shutterfly and those turned out great too. And were really easy to make. I didn’t worry about narrowing the images down to 60 since the pages were so cheap. I just included like 150 images in the albums for the parents!

We used those photo corners in our save the dates and it took me a minute to figure out that you had to lick them!

I think the album looks amazing! I’m probably going to use that graphite transfer trick for one of our projects because neither of us can do free hand writing that well. Thanks!!!

We used MyPublisher for our parent albums and they came out nice. Then I made ours (which was a long process) through adoramapix and it’s amazing. I love that they offer the lay flat pages for an affordable price. The cover options are few but that was my only complaint. We got 76 pages (the max) so I included about 200 photos which was really nice as well. I would highly recommend that as an alternative to a photographer made book if you’re willing to put in the time, It’s cheaper and the pages are thick too! Mine took about 3 weeks of nightly editing (not every night but several) to get all the photos I wanted in a layout I was happy with.

YAY i’m a June 12 2010 bride too!!!!! it’s funny you ordered your prints from adoramapix but didn’t use their digital albums… did you want the old fashioned classic type of album for your parents or something? the crushed velvet cover is really pretty :) i’m gonna use adoramapix for our digital albums, they have a great type of lay flat pages that i love! i’m designing the page layouts in Gimp (a free photoshop type program) and then uploading those which is much easier than using their online layout tool from scratch. it’s taking me forever too, especially since i already had designed our books for Picaboo but then discovered Adoramapix and a whole new layout inspiration i wanted to do. plus i’m doing 2 books to cover the whole wedding day: they only let you do 76 pages max per book and you’re right, it is HARD to narrow it down!!
