I wouldn’t go there yet.
I’m talking about the maternal-instincts button. You know, the one that’s built inside all of us and somehow miraculously turns on at some point in life when you’ve settled down, feel that partying is only for the youngins, when a glass of wine tastes way better than a Slurpee from 7-11, and finally—when you travel and jet lag kicks in…it REALLY kicks in.
Yeah, I’m talking about those buttons. The infamous buttons that I told Mr. French Toast would turn on when we are ready to tie the knot.
In the Chinese household, it’s very common for the children to actually live with their parents until they get married. That’s what I did until Mr. French Toast and I bought a house last year. Suffice it to say, I lived a very easy life with my parents after I moved home from college. Easy meaning that my parents did the cooking, the cleaning, and even dogsitting Mokka. It was quite a transition to go from living with my parents to living with Mr. French Toast.
And I’ve heard the following question sooo many times from him since we got engaged, I swear I’ll throw a dozen buttons with the pins still sticking out if he asks me One. More. Time.
These are the buttons that I’ll throw! Harhar. (source)
“Honey, didn’t you say your buttons would turn on?”
Mr. French Toast especially likes to rub that question in my face when I travel and leave the house and the dog behind—when he relives his bachelor days of instant ramen, frozen lasagna, and Chinese take-out. I thought men actually enjoyed the alone time. Somehow he missed the memo.
Apparently, my buttons decided to stay kaput for a while longer, yet to be discovered. Which is a bummer because it would have been really handy to push the “ON” button when my baby nephew decided to poop within the 15 minutes that Mr. French Toast and I were babysitting him, or the time that I was supposed to cook dinner to host my family and I opened our fridge to see this:

Guess who made the dash to the closest restaurant in the neighborhood to order take-out? At least my family didn’t go thirsty.
And so I told myself—the day that I walk down the aisle, I will be fully prepared to dodge what married life throws at us. Whether it’s a cooking disaster in the kitchen or changing diapers, we’ll go through the ups and downs of life and learn the ropes together, buttons on or off. And so be it!
Are your buttons turned on yet? What are some changes that you made to your lifestyle for your significant other?
