Mrs. Jam's Picture
Mrs. Jam, Chicago Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Associate Wedding Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Structural Engineer Engagement Date: December 23, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Hunter’s Ridge, Princeton, IL About Me: I’m a penny-pinching cat lady getting ready to marry the frugal dog lover of my dreams. Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.
About Mrs. Jam

When people with barely-there curls come up to me and sympathize about having naturally curly hair, I get mentally exasperated and internally lose my cool. Maybe this is because annoying junior-high-school boys used to call me “raccoon,” and maybe it’s because my hair gets lampshade-shaped when I try to straighten it, and maybe it’s because I’m terrified of swimming in public because the frizzy, productless result post air dry has a monstrous life of its own.

And after years of struggling with my curls, trying to chemically relax them, and getting more bad haircuts than anyone should ever, ever have to endure (once a stylist cut my entire head of hair dry using only a razor), I’ve come to terms with my hair. It makes it easy to pick me out of a crowd, lends itself well to ginormous hair accessories, and takes a whopping five minutes to do in the mornings.

So after all this hair-induced anguish, I figured it was high time to share my wealth of hard-earned curl knowledge with people who may be cursing their own hair and fighting with a straightener on a daily basis. This post is dedicated to you, my wild-haired friends.

First up, my hair product arsenal. I shampoo my hair maybe once every three days, dump gallons of conditioner in it daily, and never leave the house without my L.A. Looks gel:

Oh, incredibly inexpensive Mega Mega Hold, how I love thee. Gone are the days of fugly vacation photos when you forgot to pack the hair gel because you can find this in any drugstore, grocery store, anystore, everywhere. It is the only thing that defines my curls and keeps frizz at bay. Two words: OBSESSIVE LOVE.

But you know what? It can feel crunchy. I’m accepting of this (I secretly like it), but I understand it can be a deal-breaker for some people. So for my soft-curl days, I present you Noodle Head and Bumble & Bumble Grooming Creme:

Pretty self-explanatory. All of these products make me happy. Strong-wind tested, curl approved.

But perhaps the best piece of advice I can give anyone with curly hair is A) find a hairstylist who specializes in curly hair, and B) get a good cut. I get that this is technically two pieces of advice, but coming from someone who recently learned the power of an amazing stylist and chop, I can’t begin to express the importance.

I mean really, do you understand your hair’s curl patterns? Has anyone actually painstakingly gone through your hair, section by section, and literally read the curl types to you as you sit in the chair, caped and shocked by this whole new world of information?

Hair's What's Happening in the Curly World : wedding beauty chicago hair Jam4 jam4

First I was like…and then I was like…

As unique and exotic as curly hair may seem, it’s easy to get sick of. When my hair was long, it was heavy and blah. It would ambush Mr. Jam’s face as we hugged. Alas, I decided to go the PWC (PRE-wedding chop) route, and put my hair-fate in the hands of a curl specialist.

After my hours-long, long-to-short chop, I cried. And no, it wasn’t the sappy “I miss my long hair so much because it was a part of me and I was used to it and now it will take forever to grow out” cry. It was actually an “I can’t believe I lived so long without having an actual style, and oh, how I wish I could go back and chop it sooner” cry.

So, wild-haired pals, whether you rock the long locks or a short ’do, here’s some wedding day curl-spiration. And yes, some of it is so awesome, I almost considered growing my hair back out. Almost.

Please tell me other people can relate to this perpetual, life-long curl struggle. Or do you hate curly hair because you were forced to get a perm as a a child even though you really wanted the timeless rattail/bowl-cut combo? Do you battle curls with a flat iron or chemicals, and are you freaking out over a curly wedding-day ’do?

And PS: If you see a curly-headed stranger and feel a strong urge to reach out and touch their locks, please refrain. It’s just weird. And it makes that person feel like a puppy.

I don’t have curly hair, but one of my first thoughts when your first posts went up was “Oooh, her hair is so adorable!” I have several curly-haired friends who struggle with their hair. You rock it out!

Oh how I love this post!

I swear by Suave mousse at $2 a bottle you can’t go wrong - apply it when you hair is wet and let it air dry. never crunchy or sticky

I love that my hair is low mainetance in the morning, but i never feel “put together” or “polished” unless my hair is straight. But there are so many people and stylist who tell me i wish i had your curls

AMEN sister! Remember when stick straight hair was in! I felt like such an outcast! I used the LA gel to control my locks back in the day. I have come to peace with my curly locks and am glad that the only time spend on my hair in the morning is to dry it and not style it. But I wish I could change it up I found a style that works but I look almost the same at 25 as I did when I was 20.

PS The middle group of pix with the red head on the left looks VERY similar to how I had my hair done for my wedding!

im a huge fan of DEVA curl for curly hair, its all sulfate free products and leaves your hair soft, not hard sticky, or wet looking (which i cant stand).

Try it out! I had my hair wavy for teh wedding…which soften my curls.

I was actually going to ask about your cut when I first saw your postings. Our hair is almost exactly the same. I do love it long (it’s taken me years to perfect my regimen) but every now and again I get bored…I’m super nervous about it though, how was yours cut? I feel your pain and your love for the curl! I couldn’t imagine not having mine now that I’m older :D

I LOVE your hair, and I’m hating my own curls at the moment, but I have never liked how I look with short hair so I’m just afraid your ‘do wouldn’t work on me :( I think it’s either long and curly or short and straight for me, and I just don’t want to damage my hair with daily flat-ironing like I did for so many years before! I should find a stylist who specializes in curls, though, before I completely give up….

I wish I could tell you I’ve reached curly headed peace, but I would be lying. I mean, I’m at peace with my hair… when I straighten it. Which I do. Every. Single. Day.

We will not even discuss the anxeity I am having over wedding hair. I mean, it’s bad. I wrote about this recently myself. It’s just that there is one serious difference between you and me. Your hair is gorgeous and mine is just unruly and weird. I hate my curls. And what’s worse, so does Mr. E. (But maybe that’s because he’s only ever known me to straighten it. Leaving it curly always kinda shocks him.

haha! I love this post! I can totally relate. I have had some bad haircuts in my life and then I found my stylist (who also has curly hair) and i drive 45 minutes just to have her cut my hair. I once had long hair too and am totally loving the face that I embraced the short curly hairstyle. Not many people can pull it off and you rock it so well! I can’t imagine going back to long hair.
I may have to try that bumble and bumble or noodle head stuff. I love soft curls and I feel like what I use now either weighs my hair down or it makes my curls fall out (my hair isn’t quite as curly as yours).
and i agree that people shouldnt touch our hair…i had a very large black man ask to touch it once…totally creepy!

Your hair is gorgeous. And I showed Mr E your last sentence asking people to refrain from touching the curly hair of others and he yelled YES! He has strangers touching his hair all the time.

I’m with you! My hair is super curly. I went the naturally curly method about two years ago, and haven’t washed with regular shampoo since. My hair is much happier.

I recommend Biosilk Rock Hard Gel if you want something super hard holding. And, yes, crunchy, but the crunch scrunches out!

My hair is not curly. It’s this gross combination of curly, wavy and frizzy. If I try to put gel or hairspray in it, the curl doesn’t stay - it just looks like crunchy kinks in my hair. I have to flat iron everyday :( Oh how I wish I could put my hair up to look as curly and lovely as those inspiration pictures, or chop it short and have it look as effortlessly gorgeous as your curls!

My hair used to be curlier and I MISS it! I do. I finally came to terms with the curls in college and then age, hormones, idk what happened, and now my hair while still curly underneath, is mostly wavy on top. I can’t stress the importance of a good cut enough. I hate when people complain of their “straight” frizzy hair, when I can tell that it’s naturally wavy or curly and they’re brushing or blowdrying the heck out of it. Gosh I had a roommate in college who was so hard on her naturally curly hair that it became so brittle between the flat iron and blow drier that when wet it felt mushy. ICK.

Rock on with your curly self!

Yes I have curly hair, though the curls are not as tight as yours. My hair is like the photo you have above of that red head on the left. Loose curls. I’ve struggled with my hair forever. If it’s long it is way too heavy and triangular. If it’s short (like it is now) it makes me look older and sorta like a soccer mom. My stylist never cuts it the right way. I always want lots of nice layers but he does it wrong! Can you PM me the name of your stylist? I’m only 6 hours away from Chicago and am going their this spring. Maybe I can get a really nice haircut for once!
Also, I wish you luck in finding a stylist that will work with your curls for your wedding day. I always emphasized that I wanted to use my natural curls but yet at every trial and on my wedding day they still straightened my hair first then curled it with a curling iron. It didn’t look like my natural hair at all and just looked pretty generic and straight. Oh well. The things I would change if I could go back and do it again!

Also, I use Suave mousse, Aveda “Be Curly”, and more recently Living Proof No Frizz Wave Curl Styling cream (it smells wonderful). I think the cheap mousse works the best for holding the curls, but it does tend to feel the heaviest and I don’t always like that.

Also, Bumble and Bumble curl creme is amazing!
