“Tiers” of Joy

December 28th, 2010 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

Since it looks like I may not be able to make my own wedding cake (I haven’t quite given up entirely!!), I decided it was time to speak to my wedding planner about my options. When I spoke to her a few weeks ago, she mentioned that I may not be able to have a three-tiered cake! Since I will be getting married on the coast, it would be more difficult to transport a larger cake. The other option would be to fly someone out to the wedding location to assemble the cake on site.

I know…devastating!

First of all, I have had dreams of a three-tiered wedding cake for as long as I can remember. Second of all, I love the number three. I think that the best things in life come in threes. (For instance, I have two sisters, I live in apartment number three, and I was born on the third!)

One of the things that I am really loving right now is uneven tiers, which is why I really want more than two tiers. I love the look of a slightly narrower cake with tiers in three different heights. I love this green and pink five-tiered cake.

The uneven look also looks great with three tiers. I also can’t help but wonder if the wider/shorter tiers would actually make the cake more stable.

How adorable are these cakes? It also seems like they would be pretty stable, right?? I actually don’t know anything about what makes a cake sturdier or easier to transport.

That being said, I thought I should at least investigate this two-tiered-cake situation. I found a few adorable two-tiered cakes that I think might look great with uneven tiers (and the right cake stand, of course!).

I totally love the lace look (obviously). I would love a simple cake that is uber romantic with a vintage feel. I would LOVE if I could make the three tiers work. If not, I think this is not a battle worth fighting.

Does anyone have any great two-tiered wedding-cake inspiration? How many tiers did you have on your cake? How do you feel about uneven tiers?

I love everything you just posted. I hope you get to have your three tiered dream cake, but the two tiered ones look great too!

I love everything you just posted. I hope you get to have the three tiered cake of your dreams, or an awesome two tiered cake that is just as unevenly perfect!

Beautiful cakes. I love the uneven tiered look as well, but we are just going to have one small tier (plus cupcakes) to save us the hassle of figuring out how to move the tiers.

Are you dead set on having the tiers actually attached to each other? Could you have three cakes on cake stands at different levels in a nice, artful presentation? Then you could even have really yummy different flavors…

Love your inspiration! That yellow lacework cake was actually my inspiration photo for our cake!

I love the first and the third ones you posted. I think a nice wide bottom layer would give it good stability, then the middle tier could be nice and tall.

Stability of the cake should have nothing to do with height and/or amount of tiers. Think of the crazy angle tier cakes that are on food network. For a tall cake, a rod/pole/wood dowel will pass through all the tiers, straight down the center. If they are dead set against it, see if you can have a fake tier for one of the tiers. It should be a lot cheaper. Usually made from styrofoam, covered in fondant so it matches, and adds a layer to the cake. (I had a bride that was dead set on a three tiered cake but had a small guest list so the bottom tier was fake because it was not going to be needed but it achieved the look the bride wanted). If the cake maker you are using does not have access to this type of thing, maybe you could bring it. Most cake stores have these pre-cut. They are what most cake shops use in their display cakes.
