Costa Rica or Aruba?

December 29th, 2010 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Brooch

What type of honeymoon would you suggest?

Personalized service in a secluded and exotic location (Costa Rica)

or

The all-inclusive resort experience along crystal-blue ocean water (Aruba)?

We honestly do not know.

However, what we do know is that we want to be nearby a beach, secluded, at a romantic and memorable location, preferably in a modern room or villa, and if it were all inclusive, that would be perfect.

It’s taken us awhile, but we’ve finally narrowed down our list of possible honeymoon destinations to two places: either Costa Rica or Aruba. We found really nice resorts at both of these locations, but now we’re faced with some pretty tough decisions. Do we want to a television? Should we be within walking distance of the beach? Do we want to go someplace adventurous? Do we want peace and quiet, or are modern amenities and entertainment more important?

These are the two places we’re comparing:

Riu Palace in Aruba:

  • Beach within walking distance
  • Modern amenities, including a television
  • Multiple restaurants and entertainment options
  • All inclusive

We tried to imagine what we’d experience upon arrival if we went to Riu Palace in Palm Eagle Beach, and after a short shuttle ride to the resort from the airport, voila! Paradise is ours! We’d drop our bags off in the room and no doubt head straight to the beach. There are seriously miles of blue beach and it’s a perfect setting for the Caribbean honeymoon we’ve always imagined.

We absolutely love TripAdvisor and even though Riu Palace is only 77 percent recommended, some reviewers claim it’s the best all inclusive in Aruba! This review from a few happy honeymooners got me really excited about the possibility of going there!

After all, this place has a lot to offer: more than five restaurants, a casino bar, swim-up bar, two pools, complimentary sun loungers, towels and parasols, a complimentary gym, sauna and jacuzzi, and even use of computers with internet access.

Riu Palace fits our criteria perfectly except that it’s not secluded. There are a lot of indications on Trip Advisor that the resort is crowded with families and children, but I think we could easily retreat to our room if necessary:

The only other downfall with Riu is the price. While it’s within our budget, it’s a little more than we had anticipated spending and it’s twice the price of our other option in Costa Rica.

The total estimate for this trip is $4784.00. A Junior Suite with an ocean view is $630 per night and airfare would be about $400 for each of us round trip.

Oxygen Jungle Villas in Costa Rica:

  • Very secluded
  • Unique and exotic location
  • Modern living space, but no TV (only a portable DVD player in the room)
  • Affordable

*Sigh*

Isn’t it gorgeous? I think so!

I found Oxygen from a thread here on Weddingbee, Our Costa Rican Honeymoon from ETwedding (thank you!). Mr. B had been talking about going to Costa Rica for a while, but I was still set on the Caribbean. I didn’t prefer the place he found there, Villas Hermosos. It has high ratings on Trip Advisor, but is a little too rustic for my taste.

When I looked up Oxygen it blew any other options out of the water! It’s 98 percent recommended and there isn’t a single terrible or even average review; 65 of the total 68 reviewers ranked it excellent! Not to mention, Conde Nast Traveler magazine also listed them on their 2010 Hot List, and it’s no wonder.

Oxygen’s resort villas are scattered through the jungle of Uvita. It’s secluded and offers uninterrupted peace and quiet. We probably would share the resort grounds with just a few other couples, unlike Riu, where hundreds (maybe thousands) of other people will be.

Um, and oh yeah! By the way, the villas are totally glass enclosed!!

How cool is that?

Everyone says these private porches are a joy, as well:

The other great thing about Oxygen is the personalized service that would be available to us. Everyone on Trip Advisor mentions the owners, Flora and Edwin and how wonderful and helpful they are in planning day trips, accommodating special needs, and giving recommendations.

There’s also a lot of talk about the food and how the resident chef is really talented; the food is not included, but it’s very reasonable (about $25 per person for dinner, but that’s for four courses)!

Oh yeah, and there’s a yoga studio!

The only thing Oxygen doesn’t have (or doesn’t seem to have as far as we can tell) is that beautiful stretch of blue beach. I think we can purchase day passes to go to the nearby beach, but it’s not like taking a five minute walk from your hotel suite.

Then there’s the issue of getting there.

Remember how I mentioned the ease of arriving in Aruba and heading straight to the beach? Well, if we decided to go to Oxygen, we’d most likely have to rent a car at the airport and drive three hours to resort! Three hours! That’s a long time and we’re going to need a GPS to get us there. I’m afraid the roads might be steep and windy too. Eek.

We’re definitely nervous about this, but it could be worth it for a view like this:

Costa Rica or Aruba? : wedding arlington honeymoon Statue Oxygen Jungle Villas: Statue with a view

Source

One of our favorite things about Oxygen is the price!!

The total estimate for this trip is $2520.00. Villas are $170 per night and we would need at least $100 per day for food for both of us. The flight would cost about $300 per person round trip, plus we’d need about $300 for a rental car for the week.

Which place do you think looks better?

OMG, both of those locations are beautiful! I’ve never been to either so I can’t really give you advice except to go with what you like doing. If you are a lazy, beach couple I’d go with Aruba. If you like to explore I’d say go to Costa Rica. I’m sure you’ll get tons of helpful comments :)

I studied abroad for a semester in CR and then returned for a week with Mr TM in 2008, so I’m all for Costa Rica!! It is an incredible country, you’ll definitely see monkeys, birds, lizards, etc and you could probably arrange transportation from the airport through the villas so you wouldn’t have to drive…But honestly, both options sound pretty darn good to me as I sit here with 2 feet of snow outside, so I’m pretty sure you won’t go wrong, whichever you choose!

Costa Rica!! I went and stayed there and loved it. You won’t have to drive, check out Interbus - that’s who we used for transportation - very reasonable and reliable. Such a beautiful place and such wonderful people. Enjoy whatever you choose :)

@Mrs. Glasses: They both DO look beautiful which is the trouble we’re having! I think we’d love the all inclusive atmosphere and ease of everything, but you don’t go to a place like Oxygen just an ole’ time! @Mrs. Trail Mix: Aww yay! I never knew how beautiful the place was until Mr. B showed me pictures and talked to me about it. When I found this place, I was blown away! I really like the idea of having a little exposure to new culture on our honeymoon, you know? @KLloyd1: Sorry I made it harder!! Had you heard of either of these places? These are two really tough locations to chose between! KIT and let me know where you guys decide to go!

We went to Aruba in November for ours. We got stuck during a week when it was raining, which it never does but we still loved it. It has a great mixture of laziness and adventure. We stayed at the Marriott and it was really nice. Every restaurant that we ate was super good. Honestly, if you go to Aruba, you can get a hotel and eat on your own for a lot less then the all inclusive price. We took the bus to the grocery store and got beer, snacks and breakfast stuff. Buy a bottle of booze at the duty free in the airport, buy a cheaper cooler, and you have your own bar at the beach.

We ate good, drank plenty and had a great time regardless of the weather. We were there Saturday to Saturday, did a couple tours and ate well every night, and didn’t spend a ton.

Everyone is so nice in Aruba!! We will go back for sure.

We went to Costa rica and it was beautiful! I wouldnt drive there, the roads in remote areas suck, there are no signs and no railings on steep roads. If you do CR, you will want to put some money in your budget toward tours of the rain/cloud forest. Relaxing is awesome but it would be a waste not to go exploring!

We went to Aruba for our honeymoon in Aruba. While we had uncharacteristically bad weather, we loved it. Honestly, though you can find a hotel and eat out for a less. We stayed at the Marriott. The restaurants were amazing and weren’t bad at all in prices. We had a great time. Perfect mix of beach and still some adventure. You don’t have to rent a car, we just took cabs or walked. Cabs are cheap too.

We really loved it, the people are so nice, everywhere takes USD, another added bonus. We will go back for sure one day.

We stayed at the Westin Aruba which is nextdoor to the Riu. The Riu seemed awesome and we would definitely look into staying there if we were planning it again! So I guess my vote is Aruba :)

COSTA RICA!!!!!!!!!!!!

We got engaged there, so I’m partial to it :)

Anyway, if the main thing you’re concerned about is the drive, get a taxi or a driver at the airport and have them drive you. For a 2 hour ride, we found it cost like $100 each way. We took a GPS and still had a major FAIL, getting seriously lost. Next time we go, we will be hiring a driver to take us to our condo (it’s in Jaco, CR) and would then rent a car in the town we stayed in.

I love CR. It’s beautiful, reasonably priced, off the beaten path, and the room in CR is way prettier!!

@Westie: Thanks! I’ve heard good things about the Westin too! I’m glad there’s a vote for Aruba. It’s hard to turn away from that beautiful blue beach, and neither of us have ever been!

@blondeeebuckeye: Aw :) Yay! That’s great news to hear! I do love that it’s off the beaten path. Also, Mr. B is calling TODAY (as we type) to talk to them about getting there! We seriously don’t want to get lost - yikes!! Thanks for your recommendation! I agree the room is way nicer!

Oh wow! They are both gorgeous but being the thrifty (ahem *cheap) person I am, if you are between two places I’d go with the cheaper one. Over $2000 worth of savings! They both look wonderful, and I love the thought of all inclusive, but I just don’t know if it’s worth all that extra money if you’re torn. Do what will make you happiest though:) Happy deciding!

We had to make a similar decision. I wanted Costa Rica, but we ended up at an all-inclusive, adults only resort in the Dominican Republic. After all the chaos of the wedding and having just finished a semester of school (I got my master’s and hubby finished his first year of grad school) it was nice to sit around and not have any set schedule. We only planned two excursions in seven glorious days. The most scheduling we did was trying to catch World Cup games.

My hubby’s little brother also got married this year and they went to Costa Rica. They absolutely adored it and were constantly moving around the country for two weeks.

I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

I love all-inclusives and have also done a major road trip through Costa Rica. It was fantastic. The one thing I will say about Aruba is stay tuned for sales…Make travelzoo and cheapcaribbean your bffs. I am suprised that you cannot get a better deal right now. You may have inspired me to find you a better one myself! Best of luck, you cannot make a bad decision!

@heather25: Aw, thanks Heather! That’s super UBER sweet of you! We actually check Travel Zoo like every week! We hold our breath waiting for that top 20, but we haven’t seen anything YET that can compare. We are holding out though, at least a little while longer! @BrianneG: Oh wow! Looks like a lot of folks picked between these two places. We’re thinking we don’t want a schedule either and it’d be nice to have access to TV and cable :) @mg1363: You sound JUST LIKE Mr. B! It’s a no-brainer when it comes to cost, for him, cheaper is the way to go!! $5k is A LOT to spend in one week on a vacation! Maybe we can find something a lot cheaper that’s also all inclusive on Trip Advisor - fingers crossed!!

I’m not a fan of crowded all-inclusive resorts, so I vote Costa Rica all the way!
