I Think I Might Need This Shirt

December 29th, 2010 @ 10:42 am by Mrs. Waffle

Mr. Waffle was offered a great opportunity to do some animation for a company out in L.A. for the next few months. He leaves in two weeks, which is gonna make me a sad, cranky-pants little Wafflette.

That lucky man is getting to have two-and-a-half months of no direct wedding planning. Every man’s dream, I’m sure!

Is anyone else spending part of their engagement separate from their future spouse? How are you managing long-distance wedding planning?

Mr. Library went to study in Russia for three months during the middle of our engagement where he could only chat with me online about once a week. It did suck, but it made coming back together and really getting down to planning that much more special. And I may or may not have bombarded him with wedding questions when I got him on the phone once a month… ;-)

For the first 8 months of our engagement I was finishing up my Master’s. It was hard at first, but since I did the majority of the planning anyway, I would send him emails and we would chat online about wedding related things. And then schedule things for when I would come home from 9 hour drives!

Mr. Jam has been traveling a lot lately for work & is often gone during the week and flies home for at least a day on the weekends. HATE IT. It hasn’t been a burden on the wedding planning, but it is incredibly boring around the house during the week!

Just try to think of the positives: You have the TV to yourself to watch whatever you want, plenty of time to read some great books without interruption, and a super happy homecoming to look forward to!

we did the entire engagement long distance. it definitely made it tough at times because he had this disconnect from the planning portion. it will be over once we marry though!

My situation wasn’t quite long-distance by typical definition but it definitely came close. My husband works in retail and for 10 weeks in the middle of our engagment his store decided to go through a remodel and had him working overnight to manage the crew. We still got to live with each other but you couldn’t really tell. ALL household responsibilities were mine…on top of working, wedding planning, school, etc. I never saw him, not only did I not see him, but vendors work during daylight…hello?!? If any decisions needed to be made while he was sleeping he just had to forego any say. Neither of us deals with change too well so we spent the majority of the time arguing too…whenever we did manage to speak. (Not to mention let’s throw in his best bud’s bachelor party IN VEGAS and you’ve got some form of hell, I swear). When it was all said and done, he was asked to manage a remodel of yet another store…thankfully he declined stating he’d be divorced before he ever got married!

my fi and I are apart during our engagement - he got an opportunity to work out of state too. It sucks! It is really fantastic and special when he does come home though.
Good luck! Definitely get that shirt - really cute.

We’ve been long distance, and will be our entire engagement except for the last month. It’s hard, but we’re also long distance from our wedding location, so I’ve been planning everything over phone/email anyways.

If I were to do the whole thing over, I would tell FI that I don’t want to start wedding planning until we both have jobs in the same place. Would have been much less stressful!

Yep…we’re long distance and only see each other every two weeks. I think the hardest part is that when we are together, I want to just hang out and enjoy him, but it’s the only time we can look over plans together and discuss them face to face, so it has completely over taken our weekends together. We’re getting married where he lives (and I’ll move there in the spring), so we also do all of our vendor meetings on our weekends there.

It’s not ideal…but it’s doable! And I can spend hours looking at wedding “porn” and not feel like I’m neglecting him… :-)

Okay, first off, you need the shirt. It’s by far the cutest & saddest thing I’ve ever seen.

Anyways! Mr. G and I live an hour apart. It’s not that far, but just far enough to make meeting vendors & doing wedding stuff a super pain in the butt!

Awwww, that stinks! We spent 3 months apart the summer of 2009, a few months after we got engaged but almost a year before the wedding but it was still really hard! Hopefully the time will pass by quickly!

That must be so hard! Lots of Skype, eh? You can badger him about wedding stuff on there!

Cute shirt! FI proposed in May while I was in France. I came back in August, but had a semester to finish in Boston. The whole time he’s been living in San Francisco, with some short visits to finish his PhD, so we’ll have spent 7 months out of our 11 month engagement apart.

We were semi-long distance at the start of our relationship (before moving in together) and it was not nice to be so far away! Luckily it’s only a couple of months, with the wedding planning keeping you busy it’ll pass very quickly!

Mr. Jelly went on 3 different 2 1/2 month deployments during our 19 month engagement, meaning that he was away for more than 7 months of it. It was fine. I mean, it wasn’t ideal but he still gave me the emotional support I needed and wedding details aren’t his thing anyway. I made sure to keep busy and he tried to help in any way he could (like doing online research).

Man. I’m pretty sure my boyfriend and I will spend 2 years of our engagement an 18 hour drive apart. He can make over $25 grand a year more in a different state for the same job, so while I’m finishing college I’m pretty sure we’ll be doing the long-distance thing. On the bright side, we won’t just be planning a wedding, we’re planning a life; he’ll be buying a house up there for us, helping me pay for college, and buying the ring I’ve always wanted (with like, a week’s salary. Man!). It’s going to suck, but man does he have all these romantic ideas to make it worth it.

Don’t worry Miss Waffle - you’ll make it through! My fiance is a consultant, and his latest project has him travelling out of the country every week from Monday morning through Friday morning since May! Of course it’s not ideal, I always feel bad discussing wedding things on the weekends, since its our only time together, but we make it fun!
