After all of the drama that I had with the sewing machine earlier in our engagement, you’d think I would never want to use one again.
But I guess I’m a glutton for punishment because just a couple of weeks ago I found myself busting out the sewing machine again for another project.
What? I had leftover fabric scraps that I needed to use! I paid good money for the fabric and dammit, I was going to use it!
But, luckily for me (and Mr. Cardigan, and everyone else who has to interact with me on a daily basis) this project was much, much (much much much) easier than the napkins.
I’ll admit that I probably didn’t do this the “right” way, but with my new attitude of “if it stresses me out, it’s gone” when it comes to wedding-related things, I knew I had to keep things simple.
What did I make, you ask?
I made a pennant banner! Now, before I tell you how I made it and you balk at all of the shortcuts I took, let me just show you how cute it turned out…

Love, love, love! Sorry for the awkward lighting—my house has the worst lighting ever.
Okay, now that you know that it actually looks cute, here’s my completely unscientific method for making a pennant banner.
I took all of my leftover fabric and cut it into triangles using my rotary cutter and self healing mat. I pretty much just freehanded the first one and then used it as a template for the others.
Then? I tossed them all inside some bias tape with approximately four inches in-between each one and sewed it shut.

That’s. IT.
I didn’t hem the edges of the triangles, I didn’t fold the bias tape into quarters like all the tutorials I read said to, and I didn’t do any sort of actual measuring.
And you know what? It felt pretty damn awesome. It was freeing to not worry about perfection, and this still turned out to be one of my favorite projects I’ve done so far!
So, lesson learned: Sometimes not following any of the rules can turn out to be awesome.
(Okay I may have twisted that a little bit, but that’s a fun lesson, no?)
So tell me – did you have any DIY projects where you tossed out all the rules and it still turned out awesome?
