Mrs. Veggie's Picture
Mrs. Veggie, Raglan, New Zealand/Scranton, PA Age and Occupation: 27, Director of Small Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 42, PhD Student & Farmer Engagement Date: June 13, 2009 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Indian Head Camp, Honesdale Pennsylvania About Me: I am a tree-huggin' farmer turned enthusiastic wedding-planner. I live in a house truck and wear flip-flops more often than shoes. In my old life I was a high school Spanish teacher in love with a crazy guy who lived off-the grid on a farm in New Hampshire. But, we decided to mix things up a bit, quit our jobs and move to New Zealand. My southern hemisphere lifestyle involves growing veggies, teaching, running our small non-profit, and surfing. I love laughing, singing, playing, and the inspirational Mr. Veggie (of course!). For our wedding, I am committed to throwing a killer party that celebrates our values without breaking the bank. Look forward to an eco-thrifty summer-campy weekend-long extravaganza.
About Mrs. Veggie

Way way back, at the beginning of this whole process, over nine months ago, I wrote about how our goal was to have an amazing wedding that celebrated us. By celebrating us, I mean celebrating who we are, what we stand for, how we live. Our lifestyle. A lifestyle of living simply and lightly on the planet.

I’d like to pretend that this was easy, but the pull of the wedding industry is strong. Actually, maybe that’s unfair, because it’s not just the wedding industry. I am a girl who grew up in a state known for its highways and malls, in the highest consuming nation on the planet, during an economic boom. I was given Barbie dolls, and movies starring Disney princesses, and cassette tapes of Debbie Gibson and told by society, that like them, I too could have it all, especially on the biggest day of my life, my wedding day.

A princess bride? (Oh Darling Photography)

So, yes, even though my heart and my head knew the boundaries that I wanted to play within when planning our wedding. And even though I created those boundaries, not anyone else. Even though deep deep down I wanted simple, and thrifty, and eco. Somewhere even deeper, laid a girl ready and waiting to buy into all of the hoopla.

Beautiful hoopla. (Personal Photo)

So, if my recaps seem a bit schizophrenic…if you wonder why we were so staunch about non-paper invitations, and then printed out eight page programs…if you wonder why my dress is re-used but my flower girls are wearing new Chucks, all I can say is it was a struggle. It was a struggle between us and what we thought our families wanted, between us as a couple, and between myself and my inner diva.

And as I sit here in my gumboots, wiping the baby duck poo off my work pants, sorting through wedding pictures to put with this post, I am happy with the balance we struck. In the end, I think we came out on top. We didn’t end up with the thriftiest or eco-iest of weddings ever on the whole planet, but we sure gave it a go. And we did end up with a very eco-thrifty wedding, one that was also very us, and made us very happy.

Happy Veggies. (Oh Darling Photography)

I will try to give out any eco and thrifty tips that we picked up along the way as I go through my recaps, and I will definitely give you both and environmental and financial tally of the event at the end.

P.S.- Wanna see a picture of our new baby ducklings?

I thought you might! (Personal Photo)

Did you have battles with yourself or with your SO while wedding planning? What were some of the things you got pulled into that you wish you hadn’t? What are some things you were happily able to resist?

duckies! so cute!

i can imagine it would be hard to balance your principles when they are so opposite of the mainstream but in the end, you must be happy with what you were able to do and it seems that much is true. good job veggie! i can’t wait to see what you ended up doing!

Beautifully put. I absolutely love your wedding party’s outfits. We have three kids and are looking to include them-love the little boys outfit and also the charcoal gray (?) dresses for the gals. And jacket-less men!

I think that through the struggle, you likely ended up creating a wedding that can serve as an inspiring model of a beautiful, fun, and indulgent event that is also socially and ecologically responsible, and that’s the best possible outcome. Instead of a wedding where folks in the “mainstream” might raise an eyebrow and say “Well okay that’s great for them, but I want people to actually enjoy my wedding,” you’ll show that it’s possible to do both. Bravo to both of you! And congratulations!

I love your honesty and dedication! You’re not perfect and I’m glad that you’re not measuring your wedding by that yardstick. Can’t wait to see your recaps!

DUCKLINGS. Okay.. reading the blog now. ;)

I think that in the end, whatever worked for you guys was the best way to go - and a slightly haphazard mix seems perfect for you both! Looking forward to reading more about your day!

Tena korua Mr and Mrs Veggie!

I usually lurk and don’t post because I’m not yet engaged. But I just wanted to say that I’m so excited to see the start of your recaps. You seem like such cool people, you looked beautiful on your wedding day, and as a fellow kiwi, I’m a little biased ;-).

I look forward to reading about how you found a middle way between being ecothrifty and meeting external expectations.

Also, DUCKLINGS!

I struggled to, not so much for the eco-friendly, more as a budget bride. We had a strict budget, and that is exactly how I wanted it. We could have spent more, it would have been hard, but it could have been done. I was determined not to spend 5 figures on one day, there is just no way I could justify it. So during the planning I would get excited every time I found a way to save money, but sometimes, in the low points when I was submersed in DIY projects or had a to-do list a mile long, I would just wonder “Why can’t I have my dream wedding and why can’t it be easy? Sure I can save hundreds of dollars by making the invitations myself, but with a couple of clicks I could have my dream invitations shipped to me already done… at a premium. Not to mention all of the gorgeous venues that I couldn’t even pretend to be able to afford. In the end it was all worth it. It was definitely hard, though.

At the end of the day, it’s about you and your DH being happy. By the huge smiles on your faces, you’ve definitely succeeded in that regard, so congratulations on figuring out what “right” meant for you.

Beautiful pictures! You are a stunning bride!

In the planning process I am also continually struggling between my desire to limit my effect on the planet, and my inner princess who wants everything! Thank you for this post! I am looking forward to the recaps!!

Right after getting engaged I was all ‘vintage dress! Save paper on the invites! Save the world!’. And, well, my dress isn’t vintage (or even budget-friendly), I’m looking at pocketfold invites with all sorts of inserts…. but I’m still happy, and the couple being happy is what really counts. :)

@Miss Cinnamon Bun: This totally made me LOL! I was similar and now my dress only “looks” vintagey, we are making guests drive 30 minutes from the ceremony to the reception (gasp!) and I am finding a love for paper crafts. I guess be eco-conscious where you can err really want to…lol.
