Confession of a Non-Crafter

December 31st, 2010 @ 4:35 pm by Mrs. Lox

I consider myself to be a creative person. I always have. However, I have learned over time that creative does NOT equal crafty. This has been a lifelong lesson for me, taught by heartbreak after heartbreak as I mess up crafts and see all my pretty visions smashed to pieces. Seriously y’all, I am a crafting fail. This is something I’ve come to accept about myself and just move on from it. Well, until now.

Now I’m on wedding blogs a lot. I’m looking around for fun, inexpensive ideas for our wedding. I’m trying to find pretty things that won’t cost us an arm and a leg. It’s a job. It’s a big job. And I’ve been working hard on it like the incredibly type-A bride that I am. But what happens is that I constantly see these awesome ideas…for crafts. These days you ladies are DIY (do it yourself) divas. I am constantly impressed by all of the awesome things I see people making. You probably see what is coming here…

And now I want to DIY stuff for our own wedding. For a multitude of reasons. Because it can save money. Because it can insert personality into our day. Because it can be fun. Because we can create something that is uniquely us and that we and our guests will remember for a long time. And because it can save money. (Yes, I said it twice. Because the money is rapidly becoming a HUGE deal!)

So I am now inviting you into something that has a high potential to be a train wreck. Sit back, put up your feet, and prepare to laugh as I forget all of life’s lessons and attempt to craft. Oh yes, I have DIY projects up my sleeve and I am ready to share it with you, dear readers. Come and hope for my successes. Come laugh at my failures. Come along for the train-wrecky ride as I attempt to DIY decorations and so forth for our  own wedding. It’s sure to be an interesting ride.

And while you’re here, why not tell me about your own crafty habits? Are you a crafty person? Or are you a DIY virgin like me just trying to make your way through? What did you decide to make for your wedding and why?

Do not underestimate the power of a wedding hanging over your head to kick your craftiness up a few levels! You’ll find amazing powers you never knew you had….like accidentally gluing your cat’s tail to cardstock…or is that only me?

I love having crafty projects, so our wedding was obviously going to have a few of them! The biggest project I’ve under taken is making fabric flowers for the reception. It’s taken a life of its own, but I’m loving it!

Good luck with your projects.

Oh, yes, girlfriend I hear ya! :) I have all these super creative ideas in my head, but when it comes time to execution it’s just a hot mess. My dream is to be crafty. Well, whatcha gonna do? The key is to make friends with super crafty friends and/or have the assistance of bridesmaids.

I’m not crafty either, but I definitely still managed to DIY quite a bit. I’m looking forward to your projects!

I can honestly say that I am not a crafty person in my normal day to day. I was inspired with the wedding blogs like you to do some DIY for the wedding. It has been a great way to save money and also occupy the time in a long engagement. Good Luck on your projects!

I think the biggest trick is understanding scale; your time and patience! I made my own centerpieces…and it was way more work than I originally intended! Sure, coating 1 pumpkin in glitter and putting a pretty bow on top is easy enough…but 22…not so fun. I set up a mini assembly line in my kitchen, a la Henry Ford, which made the process a little more bearable. What really saved me was time: these glitter covered pumpkins are practically mumified…and so I was able to make them weeks before the big day.

There will be so much stuff going on in the month leading up to your wedding, and if you can get all the DIY prepped, ready and done before then then you’ll save yourself from “implosion”.

I’ve grown up doing crafts. I admire the bees who do craft project while planning their wedding. I’ve done everything from Fimo / Scuplty baking clay (to make jewllery) to origami taught to me by own dad (who learnt it from a Japanese friend). The only advice I can give is don’t overwhelm yourself. Look at websites, and get friends to help you with your projects. The more the merrier. Unless you see your craft time as quite time. Bottom line just have fun with it!

I feel your pain - I’m a sorority girl who couldn’t. The sororities at my school were huge on crafting: gifts for sisters, crafts for fundraisers, glitter for every occasion, etc. etc. I was also the one who gave up and went out to get the beers lol. I am attempting to DIY a lot for our wedding, because I really enjoy weddings with personal touches. I really think it sets them apart from the run of the mill wedding. Goodluck! I’ll be attempting crafts myself all this year, probably tossing things across the room.

It took me on sewing class at JoAnn’s learn that there is a difference between being domestic and being crafty. Am I crafty…yes. domestic…no! :)

You all give me hope! Stick around to see if I can live up to all the encouragement. ;)

I didn’t become a crafty person till it was time to plan our wedding. Now that I have no more stationary to design, no more drink flags to make, and no more programs to assemble, I’ve moved on to sewing!

Good Luck!!! I’m sure you will do a great job. DIY projects are lots of fun, they have taken over my wedding planning. I have just started reading your blog so I’m not sure how far along you are in the wedding planning…but if you are intersted I have a great save the date DIY project that I did, as well as bridesmaid gifts, thank you’s, a cute way to ask your bridesmaids, gift/welcome baskets for your guests, any many more. I’d be happy to share instructions and photos :) Excited to watch your DIY progress.

Good luck! I’m definitely not a crafty person but we did some DIY stuff for all the reasons you wrote about. A lot of it winded up being “Oh, that’ll do” rather than “Wow! I’ve truly surprised myself by how crafty I can be!” but I guess it was fun. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got up your sleeve! :)

Can’t wait to see your projects! I think there are some jaw dropping diy projects which do require amazing crafting skills - but there are even more amazing project which seem totally easy (if time consuming) to make. And with some creativity, corners can be cut and solutions found!
