Aishiteru: (A Hot Mess of a) Ceremony

December 21st, 2010 @ 6:53 pm by Mrs. Glasses

It was five minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to begin. After getting ready and going downstairs, a friend told me, “Half the people aren’t here yet. The backyard is practically empty.”

My first thoughts were, “$(@!&!beeeeep@!!!#$&$%beeeeep*&@()$#!” Luckily the photographer and my soul sister, Tam T. Nguyen, is a pool of serenity. In the calmest, kindest voice, Tam turned to me and said, “Mrs. Glasses, you look beautiful. It’ll be okay. Why don’t we take some bridal portraits?”

Wedding Sh*t Corner

December 21st, 2010 @ 6:27 pm by Ms. Sloth

This may be presumptuous of me, but I’m willing to bet that the majority of brides-to-be have a space in their houses that has been completely taken over by wedding supplies.

In our home, it’s the corner of the dining room. We fondly refer to the area as “Wedding Sh*t Corner.”

This is it, after I organized it last night. You didn’t want to see the “before,” trust me.

I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!

I'm not afraid to poke fun at myself, and I'm a believer that given the right pair of shoes, a girl can conquer the world. While an interest in the sciences threw Mr. Tartlet and me together (again, and again, until it finally stuck), we share a love for many things---food, video games, car dancing, food, bad puns, travel, did I mention food?---that ultimately led us to where we are now, less than five months from becoming Mr. and Mrs. We're planning a laid-back, romantic, garden-inspired affair with organic and quirky touches that reflect our love for the unexpected!

I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Arboreal Aspirations

December 21st, 2010 @ 4:29 pm by Mrs. Panther

Mr. Panther and I are in Connecticut this week for the holidays, and we’re so happy to spend time with my awesome uncle, Papo. As I’ve mentioned before, my uncle has always been like a second dad to me, and since I lost my first dad, he’s really stepped up to the plate.

Even though he’s crazy-busy, my uncle really wants to build us a wedding arbor. We argued at first—the last thing we want to do is pile more work on him, especially since he’s already walking me down the aisle—but he insists. So, now we’re making plans for a hand-built awesome arbor that we’ll keep in our backyard some day! I already had lots of arbor ideas saved to my inspiration file, so we’ll be working off of those. We know we want wood, and we think we want it to have a flat top with an arch underneath it. Like this:

When I’m not traveling, Mr. FT and I enjoy marathon sessions of Law & Order: SVU, snowboarding, photography, spoiling our 3-year old yorkie-poodle Mokka and disagreeing over what music to listen to in the car. We’re planning a small winery wedding while incorporating some cultural elements into the day as a nod to our Chinese backgrounds.

A New York Kinda Love: Day-After Shoot

December 21st, 2010 @ 3:48 pm by Mrs. Canary

All photos courtesy of the amazing Angelica Glass, unless otherwise noted. Please note that the photos have only been color-corrected and not fully retouched.

When we booked Angelica, we knew that we definitely wanted a day-after photo shoot. With a large wedding, we knew our time for portraits was limited and what better reason than to get back into the wedding garb and traipse around Brooklyn for an afternoon?

We booked the shoot for about a week after the wedding. We were lucky and got gorgeous and cool weather, despite it still being the height of summer. I got out of work early and the lovely Sachiko Yanase made a house call and did my hair and makeup. I got back into my wedding gown and Mr. Canary got suited up and off we went with Angelica to Empire-Fulton Ferry Park in Dumbo, Brooklyn. We had a blast and the park is still one of our favorite Sunday afternoon spots.

Here is a small collection of the shots from the day:

Our ideal Saturday morning includes rummaging around people’s junk at garage and estate sales followed by an afternoon date to our favorite café, where we only eat sandwiches that include the word “salad.” We actually love it so much, it’s sort of our unofficial wedding theme: Look at our delicious finds, eat homemade ham salad, and celebrate our love…barndance style. When we’re not obsessing over our love-fest shindig, we’re planning themed parties for our best friends and jamming to '90s music.

I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Nobody Likes a Negative Nancy

December 21st, 2010 @ 2:28 pm by Mrs. Zebra

Hello friends! Remember me? Well, I finished the costumes for Cinderella Enchanted and am now back in full-on wedding mode. Good things, hive, especially because as I had previously thought—December has just gone and flown right by. Stupid, stupid December.

I have been extra stressed out recently and it is not only showing on my face (and neck and back…) but has also really taken a toll on my personality. In fact, I’m working through feelings of resentment towards the wedding. I know I’m supposed to be a blushing bride and getting really excited for our big day but as the Fairy Godmother might say—Falderall and Fiddly Dee! I’m excited for everything that I can do after the wedding without feeling as though I should be home doing something for the wedding. I really loathe that feeling. It’s the same feeling of being buried under a never ending to-do list. The reason it is a never ending to-do list is because I haven’t been working on anything for the wedding. You see, I have a tendency to revert when feeling overly stressed. There is a fine line between a little stress motivating me and being overly stressed to the point where I want to just forget it and go out to dinner. You know what I’m sayin’?

I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
