Mrs. Octopus's Picture
Mrs. Octopus, Boston, MA/Pittsburgh, PA Age and Occupation: 25, Grad Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Graphics Operator for TV News Engagement Date: May 6th, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Heinz Chapel Ceremony, Museum Reception About Me: When my best friend dragged me to a toga party in our freshmen year of college, I was not expecting to meet my future husband; but seven years later, here we are. I'm a crazy-organized planner at heart, and I am a great lover of random trivia, books, chocolate, blogs, new and exciting adventures, mockumentary-style television, and anything heavily flavored with bright orange fake cheese powder. We're planning a festive and fun mini-destination wedding in the place where we met: fabulous Pittsburgh, PA! I can't wait to marry the man I love!
About Mrs. Octopus

When Mr. Octo and I talked about our very top priorities for our wedding, everything paled in comparison to “feels like really lively, fun, ragingly awesome party.” The dance party aspect wedding reception was more important to us than anything else.

It was also the only thing that I never once worried might go wrong. Believe me, in the last two weeks leading up to our wedding day, I found a way to worry about everything else. I woke up every morning fresh out of a crazy dream about wedding disasters, and when I was anxious with stress, I considered ways that virtually every other element of our wedding could go wrong. But the thought that our wedding reception might fail to live up to the gigantic celebration of life I was dreaming of never once crossed my mind. I know us, and I know our guests. I come from a long line of party animals, and I kind of sincerely believe that Mr. Octo and I have cornered the market on really, really fun-loving friends. I knew that our reception would be fantastic, and I was right.

That said, I’ll be honest:this recap was harder to write than any of my others! I’ve found it really tough to articulate exactly how it felt to be surrounded by my brand new husband and family and friends, all the people I love most in the world, all of whom were just as excited and joyful and celebratory as I was.

Making It Up

January 31st, 2011 @ 6:56 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

I’m a really simple gal when it comes to makeup. I already have a lot of contrast going on (very dark hair, pale skin, blue eyes), so it’s easy for makeup to look “busy” on my visage. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I’m a scared of excess makeup.

It’s important to me to have someone there to do my makeup on my wedding day, for a few reasons. The most obvious is that I’m just not confident in doing it myself. But also, I fear that I will develop some sort of blemish situation that requires heavy-duty coverage. That just seems like something that would happen to me.

Since Zooey Deschanel has similar coloring, I have this look in mind, only a little less lash:

Enter Sarah Cormier, freelance MAC consultant. All the makeup I use on a daily basis, save for mineral powder, is MAC, so it just made sense to find an artist who is familiar with the products.

I also love photography, beating Mr. Eggs Bene at Mario Kart, and watching the most ridiculous natural disaster flicks you can think of (seriously, how can you deny the awesomeness that is The Core or 2012?? That's right, you can't). We are planning our weekend wedding adventure at an environmental educational center, and I can't wait for the fun to begin!

Return to Sender

January 31st, 2011 @ 6:30 pm by Mrs. Eggs Benedict

I’ve been wanting to get a cute return-address stamp ever since Mr. EB and I moved in together. Luckily I didn’t get one until now because we’ve moved three times since our first place together. (What, you guys don’t move that often?) But since we’re (hopefully) not going to be moving again for a little while, and I really didn’t want to handwrite our return address on every single wedding invitation, I went looking for a stamp.

I kept looking at different stamps on Etsy—like this one:

Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!

A Napa Fairytale: Prelude to a Kiss

January 31st, 2011 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Barrettes

While our guests were enjoying the string music in the courtyard, my bridal party and I had our final moments together before I was a wife. Amy popped a little bubbly and I drank it from a wine glass. There was a moment where I sort of forgot we were there to get me married! Kicking it in a small space with five of your favorite people can quickly escalate into an impromptu party, so I’m glad we were reined in by the appearance of a photographer.

I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!

Three Pairs of Wedding Shoes!

January 31st, 2011 @ 5:31 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

So I’ve been going back and forth about these Badgley Mischka shoes. I LOVE them, but I hate how popular they are. I told myself that if I saw these shoes at more than 10 weddings, I wouldn’t get them. Believe me, I hit the 10 weddings pretty quickly!

Newport Nuptials: the Moment I Wake Up and Put on My Makeup... : wedding newport pictures pro pics recap Augusti The morning of the wedding, I awoke to sunshine, took a shower and headed to Starfish Mom’s suite to get ready with the girls. They were already there waiting for makeup and hair. I didn’t have to stress about everyone getting there on time, because they had arrived earlier than I did.

We all sat around and talked. Starfish Mom made us and the boys breakfast including my favorite breakfast casserole. She absolutely loved that her suite had a kitchen and made good use of it the morning of the wedding.

I am an aspiring foodie with a weak spot for the unusual and I love semi-reality food television. I Bacon Your Pardon

January 31st, 2011 @ 4:42 pm by Mrs. Bacon

I am so sorry everyone. I have been blogging here for a while, going on and on and on about this wedding we’re planning, and I haven’t really even told you about the big picture, the theme. The Bacons are planning a fun, contemporary, kinda quirky evening ceremony followed by an equally fun, somewhat Chicagoan, semi-formal dinner party with (hopefully!) tons of dancing and hilarity: a concept that we’re calling “modern whimsy.” And the colors? Crimson, charcoal, and cream.

I guess it’s kind of hard to visualize…Maybe this will help?

We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

The Many Sides of Chuppah

January 31st, 2011 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Lioness

As I’ve mentioned before, Mr. Lion is Catholic and I’m Jewish. Neither of us are traditional in practicing our faiths, but we definitely identify with them culturally. As a Jewish bride who plans to have a non-denominational wedding ceremony, I wanted to somehow incorporate a few Jewish traditions. One tradition that we decided to include was using a chuppah.

I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

More Information = Better

January 31st, 2011 @ 4:03 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I know I’m over the top. You don’t have to tell me this, ’cause I already know. See, I have a hard time separating our wedding from the work events I’ve planned in my life. I realize it’s a very different thing, but there’s something about the detailed and organized process of planning a business conference or large-scale multi-day event that I love and I think is quite effective. When you plan a conference, people need information…lots of information, and I’m using this strategy with our wedding. To me, more info is better, so Hippo wedding attendees will be getting one more piece of mail before the wedding. Enter the RSVP confirmation pamphlet:

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

January 31st, 2011 @ 3:42 pm by Mrs. Biscuit

It’s easy! Just make your wedding guest list!

I should preface this post by saying that I think in numbers. It’s creepy. I’m like the female Rainman. Even as a child, I loved my name because it’s length was a palindrome of sorts: seven letters for my first name, three for my middle, seven for my last. Best name ever? Oh yeah.

Peas and Carrots: Pre-Marital Prep
