Bride’s Head, Revisited

January 3rd, 2011 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Oh yes. Finally. Validation, people! I’ve been a little nervous about my gut feeling to wear my hair down for our wedding. An up-do seems safer, somehow? But no. I’m feeling great about it, and here’s why:

Oh heck YES, I want to dance like this at my wedding. Hair down, whipping around with unbridled joy. But see, sometimes blonde hair looks nicer down because you can see all the different tones. My hair is just dark, dark brown, but I think it will work. Like this:

The problem is…I’m a little….neglectful of my hair. To say the least. For emphasis, I shall take an as-it-is-now, real-time, post-workday picture of my hair, whilst blogging these very words.

Observe my shame:

  • Ends so split that they will not longer lie flat, even at the merciless hands of my straightener.
  • I don’t color my hair, but you may notice the distinct discoloration of the tips, which have, after all, lived through at least three summers.
  • A length that is at least two inches past a cut that flatters my face shape.
  • The term ponytail is painfully accurate for me. My hair is so long and the ends so coarse that truly—the back of my head looks like the view from a stable door.
  • My awesome hack-job bangs that I trim myself over my bathroom sink with kiddie scissors.

I didn’t mean to be like this! Yet every time, I drag what looks like a busted weave into the salon, blubbering apologies for the inexcusable state of my hair. It is probably disrespectful to the hair-care profession that I take their lovely cuts and turn them into a curtain of fraying wires.

I must change my ways if I want to have healthy looking hair by May. I’ve read a few tips from here because Reag is basically adorable and also a hair genius. She has great tutorial videos and regularly answers reader questions about hair care. But I’m basically hair-care illiterate.

I also couldn’t help but bookmark a few pictures for my bridesmaids. I’m letting them pick whatever hairstyle they want, but look how cute!

Any other ideas for me?

your hair looks like it is pretty thick, which is is awesome because it gives you a lot more options! i think you’d be safe wearing it down. i was in a wedding where the bride wore her hair down and it was beautiful! she did lots of tight ringlets of curls and maxed out hair spray. it held for the whole night and she looked beautiful! if your hair is thinner, usually wearing your hair down is more difficult because it won’t hold a curl for an extended period of time or there isn’t enough hair to make it look full. that’s why i’m opting for my hair up with extra pieces of hair extensions lol good luck!

I hear that taking fish oil supplements can make your hair really shiny and thick.. Maybe ask your stylist what she thinks?

This is what I’m going for because my FI says that it should be against the wedding rules to wear your hair up or to look like you are wearing a bump it! LOL!

I wore my hair mostly down and it was fun but it did end up in a pony tail by about 9:30 that night, just a warning!

I wanted to wear my hair down at my wedding, but like you, had bad split ends and hair straw like from coloring. I used Redkin’s Kpax shampoo and conditioner for three months before the wedding and my hair looked sooooo much better! It was pricey, but worth it. My hairdresser says that three months is the most you can use that shampoo as it contains protein that can actually make your hair more brittle if you overdo it.

I had the same problem - double, triple, even quadruple split ends. My hair was really ruined and I felt really bad about it. Unfortunately you’re not going to like my solution (I didn’t!). I stopped using the hair straightener - in addition to using a delicate shampoo and an almond conditioner. It was really hard at first but I think now I can more or less deal with my hair just as it is, without having to change it by using the straightener. And I have no more split ends - not one! I know cause every time I’ve been to the hairdresser in the past five months they’ve checked to judge if it was time for a trim, and every time they said the hair structure was great and no trim was yet needed.

I made sure to get a trim (’bout 2 inches) a day before the wedding. I also let my hair fall into a state of disrepair for several months at a time so it would not to do to have hair like that on the wedding day, especially because I wanted to leave it down. It still looked kinda crazy at the end of the night but I was having way too much fun to care :)
