About Mrs. Pancakes

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

January 3rd, 2011 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. Pancakes

I recently read another bride’s blog that provided an excellent set of arguments for purchasing a titanium ring for her future hubby instead of gold or platinum. (I can’t seem to find the blog post now, but I swear it exists!!) The point is, it caught my attention because I hadn’t put that much thought into Mr. Pancakes’s ring and had kind of (quite wrongly) assumed there weren’t that many options. The reason I am particularly intrigued by titanium is that it’s a durable, budget-friendly option, and due to Mr. Pancakes’s lifestyle, he really needs something that will both last and that could perhaps be easily replaced. By that I mean Mr. Pancakes loves outdoor activities such as surfing, snowboarding, and rock climbing, and has a history of jewelry-related accidents. To be honest, neither one of us thinks that a $1000 platinum ring would be a wise investment, especially on our tight budget.

So what are the pros and cons of titanium?

Pros:

  • Titanium is very light and extremely durable, making it an ideal candidate for wearable jewelry.
  • Another pro is the durability; it is virtually indestructible through normal wear. Unlike gold alloys that wear down over years of normal use, titanium will hold strong, showing very little wear over the years.
  • Unlike with white gold, there is no upkeep (i.e., re-dipping) necessary.

Cons:

  • Since titanium is so durable, it is very difficult if not impossible to resize. This is bad for someone whose weight fluctuates. I don’t think this is the case with Mr. Pancakes, but forever is a long time. On the other hand, we could just replace the ring if his finger got too big.
  • Titanium can be cut off in an emergency, but it may take a little longer than a gold or platinum ring. If your future husband is as accident prone as mine, this is actually something to consider.

Here are some great more traditional and uber budget friendly titanium rings I found on Etsy:

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring

{Titanium Knights - $40}

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring5

{Minter and Richter Designs - $90}

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring3

{Renaissance Jewelry - $29.99}

Mr. Pancakes thought these traditional rings were a little boring. Also, he already has a stainless steel ring that he wears that is very similar to the first ring. He (quite adorably) feels strongly about having a ring that is “special.” Here are some less traditional titanium rings that we thought were kind of cool:

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring2

{Jewelry by Johan - $167}

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring1

{Jewelry by Johan - $167}

All That Glitters Is Not Gold : wedding costa rica rings Aring4

{Minter and Richter Designs - $175}

Mr. Pancakes’s favorite is the second one, but I am not entirely sure how well wood holds up over time. The seller at Jewelry by Johan claims that he has “just about the perfect wood treatment against everyday wear and tear.” He also notes that “wood should always be kept away from water.

What does this mean?? How does the ring hold up in the elements (rain, sand, etc.)? How will getting caught in the rain or spending a lot of time outdoors effect the color of the wood? I have put Mr. Pancakes in charge of finding out the answer to these questions. I’ll let you know when he gets a reply, but does anyone have any experience with these wood rings?

What are your thoughts on titanium rings? Are there other budget-friendly ring options I should consider?

I don’t think that surfing and rock climbing count as “everyday wear and tear”, so the wood would likely not be a great option for your FI. That’s too bad, because it’s beautiful! Why not get him the ring he likes best, and just have him not wear it during those activities? My husband takes his ring off when he drums - it gets in the way and could warp it.

The other thing you could consider is a ring tattoo. My friend’s husband has one because he’s an electrician and can’t wear metal jewelry at all, while he’s at work.

Then Mr. Pcakes can have a physical ring for special occasions and a tattoo for the rest of the time.

my hubby to be and I both have titanium wedding rings ( yes my diamond is tension set in titanium). He had his band custom made, the master metal smith informed us that titanium is cut off just as easily as gold or plantnum in case of emergency, the fact that it doesn’t/is harder to cut off is a misconception

I was looking at some wood grained ones for Mr. G but he immediately rejected those because of the durability issue. Mr. G tried on some rings and really liked the weight and feel of titanium but I thought all the rings were a little too thick and clunky for my liking. Our in dealer explained to us that titanium couldn’t come any smaller than the ones we were looking at so we wound up negotiating the price of white gold. Titanium is super popular these days, especially the looks you’ve chosen!

We just ordered my fiances ring. We got a tungsten carbide ring. It is EXTREMELY durable and comes in a few shades (both shiny and less so) like gun metal, black, and a “gold-ish” color. It was VERY reasonably priced ($300). Two downsides: 1.) It can’t be sized, BUT companies like ArtCarved have an exchange program where you can get a new size for the life of the ring for a small fee ($65/per exchange). Just be sure to ask! 2.) its is very brittle. If you drop it in just the right way, it can shatter (but we were assured this was rare). Also, in an emergency (like in the ER) if they can’t get it off, it has to be shattered, unlike gold which is cut and can be later repaired.

Just a thought. He loves his. It was a very good choice as we worried that gold wouldn’t be strong enough and platinum was very pricey. The tungsten carbide was perfect! Good luck.

Mr. C has a titanium ring and he loves it. He wasn’t crazy about having to wear a ring, because he works with his hands and has never been a “ring wearer”, but he says it’s lightweight, comfortable, and durable. It’s gotten dinged a teeny bit, because of his job, but he likes it that way - says it feels more natural and real. That’s our two-cents!

My sister worked for a guy who had a wooden wedding band. Apparently the first one broke within weeks and he bought an entire bag so he could just switch them out whenever one broke!

I also got my hubby to be a tungsten carbide ride! They are very durable and scratch resistant!

After similar research to your above finds - DH got a Palladium wedding band, have you looked into Palladium?

We have titanium rings from etsy seller, Zoe & Doyle. We love them, but Mr.’s is a little scratchy.

I agree that the wood might not be such a great idea, considering how sporty your FI is (too bad, I also love the second one). Perhaps he should really look into something custom made, if titanium is so budget friendly you might be able to fit it in!

In looking at wedding bands for my hubby to be, my jeweler (and family friend) highly advised AGAINST titanium, tungsten or palladium. Many hospitals DO NOT carry the equipment to cut off these kinds of rings and would be forced to cut off the whole finger, god forbid there was an accident.

If there’s a metal allergy, platinum would be the way to go. Otherwise, gold is fine. Even if your hubby to be is active, I know I would rather have a scratched up ring that missing a finger.

My friend’s husband is a EMT and has white gold. He too is very active and although there are scratches from wear and tear, he too wouldn’t wear anything.

Hope that you find something that works for you.

I had to laugh at
“If your future husband is as accident prone as mine, this is actually something to consider.”
My man is the exact same - if there’s a way to make any happening into a near death experience he’ll find it. Lol.

I have a titanium ring that I got off of eBay for $0.99 including shipping. It has stars cut out of it and is really cute. It is definitely great quality and might be my best jewelry purchase ever. I say go for it…it will stand the test of time and always look great! To me, it is just like a brushed metal, which is great for guys anyway (I don’t like shiny/blingy on guys).

What about Tungsten?
Our Jeweler was very wary of Titanium. He said that often times it can require surgery to remove the ring. I liked what he said “It’s great for golf clubs but not something you want wrapped around your finger” :-)

Mr CB really likes a tungsten one, with a rose gold inset stripe. Our jeweler said that titanium would scratch pretty easily, and Mr CB does a lot of lifting, carrying, physical work in his job.
I think it is extra appropriate for him though, because he’s a lighting technician, and lightbulb filaments are made from tungsten!

Both of our rings are titanium, though mine is dipped in platinum. We did a Google image search for ideas and happened to find the perfect ones which ended up being titanium. My FI likes that its titanium because he says he thinks its a more manly metal, lol.

I really liked the white gold but my FI wanted a tungsten carbide ring so thats what we ended up getting. Probably best anyway since you have to have white gold redipped every few years. One of my friends hubby had a titanium ring & they ended up replacing it w/ tungsten bc it scratched so easy. I actually found my FI’s ring at a local jewelry store & then ended up buying the EXACT same ring from Sam’s Club online for half the price. Only negatives is tungsten cant be sized (but it’s so reasonably priced that you could just replace it if needed) & it costs so much to have engraved (bc has to be engraved with a special laser). I would’ve liked to get my FI’s ring engraved but couldnt find anyone local w/ the equipment to do it & it was going to cost too much to send it off & have engraved (100+). Good luck with your ring search!

One thing you might want to keep in mind with Titanium is that it is so durable that if any thing would happen where your husbands finger got caught in something… only a certain laser can actually cut the ring off to free the finger. My fiance and I had this discussion (he didn’t want to worry about his hand/finger getting caught in something and having to cut off his finger!). Titanium also scratches… we both liked the look of Titanium, so we are going with a Tungsten ring. Hope that helps!

When we got married I bought my dh a beautiful but masculine ring that complemented mine and 6 month later he promptly lost the trillion shaped diamond from it. I was crushed but dh came up with a quick solution. An inexpensive titanium ring that he adores in fact he wears his ring more than I do mine! We are both artists so really no chance of it becoming stuck in anything. To this day I wish I had pushed him a little harder to let me know what he really wanted.
