Bridesmaid Dresscapade

Oh, my poor bridesmaids. You’ve read before that I have indeed had some less-than-stellar experiences in local bridal shops. I certainly am not willing to bring my business to a store that isn’t willing to appreciate the customer. At first, I wanted the girls to be in short dresses. My wedding gown is quite formal and gilded, as you’ve seen. Unfortunately it looked odd next to a short dress. Matching the fancy of my gown to the fancy of the ladies’ gowns never entered my thoughts but it is something to consider when purchasing the dresses.

My main sticking point for my BMs was that they feel comfortable and beautiful in any gown they choose. As for the color, I was originally thinking half in royal blue and half in royal purple. Stupid me, however forgot to take into account that I have an odd-numbered bridal party. I then began to toy with the idea of telling the BMs to go buy long blue dresses and hope for a cohesive monochromatic wedding party.

Basically, what I am trying to tell you is I was very indecisive, and my poor BMs went along for the ride. And a ride they did take, all over Massachusetts, in 15-degree weather, during the first playoffs game of the Patriots’ season. Have I mentioned that Sissy is a huge Patriots fan? I’ve got some wonderful ladies standing by me! I was indecisive as indecisive could be and at the end of that day, I threw up my white flag. We were going to a bridal shop. Not just any bridal shop, however. We were going to see the dress whisperer.

After sifting through the racks (and racks, and racks) I decided on a color and fabric. The girls would be decked out in royal blue, chiffon, floor length gowns. After those small details, the dress decision was up to them. Here’s what my beautiful bridesmaids chose:

I know, I know, I said an odd number of dresses. Cakes is having her dress made. I can’t wait to see what it looks like! So, I think I’ll have a beautiful little bridesmaid surprise on the day of the wedding.

As you might notice, not all of the dresses are from the same company. I am really hoping to have some color variation in the dresses to add a little more depth to their differences.

Did you go with bridesmaids dresses from different companies? How did it turn out?

Yeah, this is one area where I have been back and forth, here and there, to bermuda and back again. We’re supposed to be going out just to get a baseline in how everyone looks in different types of dresses in a couple weeks. I totally get why some brides just tell their girls “Just go buy any short black dress.” (Which works, but just isn’t me.) I’m trying to stick to short, all the same blue, and BMs pick their own style.

Oh I love the idea of different/similar colors and dresses! Would you mind telling us the name of the shop? My BM’s are still looking for dresses and we’re in Mass too!

Thanks!

I’m also struggling with the BM dress issue, and shopping in MA. Who/where is the dress whisperer??

I am glad to hear that you were surprised about the concept of matching formality of bm dresses to the formality of your dress… mine is kind of a classic glamour, and I was all set for short dresses, until I saw that they kind of looked like JV party members in the short frocks. I’m relieved that I wasn’t the only bride-to-be to run into this “a-ha” moment.

@CapeBride917: @Raggedy: Julie’s Bridal in New Bedford MA. It is the most amazing place in the world!

@JillBill: It’s a simple concept but I never would have thought about it. Glad to hear I’m not the only one either.

I had first intended on that the dress would come from David’s, because my bridesmaids are in different states, just to make it the easiest I could. I chose two colors apple and black. I mainly wanted apple, but allowed my MOH to do black because he skin tones does do well with red of any shade, and the others would wear apple. I chose long, and ciffon. However the cut is up to them. MOH opted to purchase her dress elsewhere, however it is still beautiful. And I am very happy with this decision.

I originally went to a bridal store with several of my bridesmaids to look at dresses. It was so overwhelming (it probably also didn’t help that I was still deciding on colors at the time and that added to the confusion). After we went home I finally settled on a color. After more consideration, I eventually decided to let the girls pick their own dresses. Not only could everyone get what they wanted, but also stay in a price range they felt comfortable. I hit up my local Wal-mart, grabbed a couple paint samples, and sent each to the girls with the request that the dress be in the same shade as the sample and hit somewhere near the knees.

So far their picks have been fantastic! I’m really looking forward to seeing the whole outcome at the wedding.

WE just went to one company, but of course I waited to the last minute. I think my BMs are going to think I’m crazy. . . oh well ;-)

Love the choices!

First Patriots play-off game? I don’t know if I would have been that nice. Go Pats :-)

and I think it’ll turn out wonderful! I love different dresses. So far I’ve been in 3 weddings…all have been matching bridesmaids. Different is good :D

i love how you call Julie the dress whisperer. The best part about her is that she is completely honest with you. If she doesn’t like how you look, she won’t beat around the bush! My mother is her main seamstress. And I tell her time and time again that she needs a total makeover in that store…but it’s her own organized chaos…she knows EXACTLY where every single dress is. amazing!
