Color Splash

January 4th, 2011 @ 9:14 am by Mrs. Tartlet

Yes, I totally yoinked the title of this post from David Bromstad’s show on HGTV. I’m so geeked, though, that the wedding industry is deviating away from the traditional white wedding dress and allowing girls to rock some color. The shade could be subtle, like this blush pink ballgown that Portia de Rossi wore for her wedding to Ellen. (Aren’t they adorable?)

The ruffled pink dress and the giant balloons (oh, my unrequited love for balloons) from this wedding make me giddy:

Even the big guns have embraced color, like this dress from Vera Wang’s Spring 2010 collection:

How about this daring number from designer Wai Ching?

And of course, who could forget the epitome of a rock ‘n roll bride, Gwen Stefani?

My favorite, though, has to be this stunner:

I know black has the bad rap of being a color of mourning, but as one of my favorite colors to wear on a daily basis, I would delight in seeing a bride pull off a dramatic, ebony ballgown for her wedding.

Will there be any unexpected splashes of color in your wedding attire? Would you ever consider wearing a dress that wasn’t white or ivory?

Lovely dresses! I think adding color to a wedding dress is a great idea, although I’m not so sure of black or too bright (e.g. red) wedding dresses. I suppose that makes me a bit of a traditionalist, but then again I have seen some beautiful brides in strong bold colors. I will keep the color to the minimum and add some peach and light teal details to the dress.

I totally wore a subtle blush pink dress for my wedding to my ex. For reals. And it was perfect.

OMG Yes! If I had not found the dress I had I would have loved a Wai Ching dress!

I’m planning on wearing a gold gown… I love the fact that brides are venturing away from white. Black is a traditional wedding dress color in Spain and Red in China…

What a great post! I love how Portia’s dress is very subtle. I am wearing an ivory dress with black wedding party dresses… Weird about you mentioning black being a color of mourning - that is exactly what my FMIL said! Oh well! I love it! :0)

On the blogs this isn’t a big deal - but whenever I tell a friend or family member that my wedding shoes are purple - their eyes bug out of their head! I LOVE the black dress above - but I think it does have a funeral-y feel to it.

Yes! My dress will be off-white with wavy, diagonal lines of very thin blue silk dupioni piping. LOVE color!

I had an open mind when I was dress shopping, I definitely wasn’t set on ONLY a white or ivory dress, but I did end up with ivory in the end.

I wanted color in my dress but didn’t like any of the dresses that already had color in them. So I had a custom dress made that looked like one dress in the front but had a patch of royal blue going up the back. I love it because from the front I’ll look traditional but from the back the blue is very striking!

@vtbride2010: I get that reaction, too (about the colored shoes)! Mmm, purple shoes.

Love all the touches of color you ladies are adding! So creative, too!

I love seeing brides in colors but I didn’t even consider it. I think part of my problem is even though that black dress is stunning… there will (hopefully) be other fancy events in my life I can wear it to. There’s not really an occasion for a huge ivory or white ballgown… except as a bride. I think it was Sarah Jessica Parker who wore a black dress and later said she regretted it for that reason.

But, that’s just me! Love seeing it on other people!

I totally would have gotten a colored gown! As it is, mine is “caffé” (somewhere between ivory and champagne), and I loooove that it’s a little bit different.
Can’t wait to see what you pick out, Tartlet!

I thought about a purple dress…I love purple. But, I think I’m probably going to go with some sort of off-white colored dress. I’ve already gone away from my little girl dream of a cinderella wedding…I think a purple dress might be a bit much even for my dear mother….who’s oddly traditional when it comes to weddings.

So I’m having purple shoes and possible a purple or red crinoline. I’m thinking a short dress right now. :-) Poor mom..

I love coloured dresses! I knew right from the start that I wouldn’t be wearing a white dress. My dress is midnight blue, and I’m so excited about it :D

My Nana gets so scandalised about colour though. She was talking about a wedding she went to, and the sight of the bride’s pink shoes poking out from under her gown made her exclaim “oh my goodness!!”.

I’m doing blush pink dress with bridesmaids in ivory. Haven’t told my FMIL yet as I anticipate a stroke…:-/ SO excited though–lots of pearls, lace, very vintage/romantic but keeping it real for my future husband with lots of navy blue and even straight down to cigar room with rich brown leather chairs. CANNOT wait! :)
