Hair Color Chronicles

January 4th, 2011 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Brooch

Hello, my name is Brooch. I am only 25 years old and I have grey hair.

And wrinkles, according to this picture:

Do you see it?

Do you see the grey?

It’s there. I promise. And I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s all over the place, and really heavy in the front.  People notice it. Seriously, Mr. B knows it’s there, and not because I’ve pointed it out. It’s just there.

Thank goodness my mom’s a hairdresser! Yup, you heard correctly, my mom’s a hairdresser so I’m always doing new things to my hair. You may have noticed from the pictures of Mr. B and me over the years that my hair color has changed quite a bit.

I used to always do new things to my hair. I haven’t bothered with it much this last year though because I’ve been letting it grow out for the wedding. I haven’t wanted to color it or add highlights, because that could be hard to maintain. Plus, I’ve been really busy!

It’s gotten really long, which is a big plus:

The color has gotten pretty wretched, though. I’m not at all happy with it. It’s really boring and faded, and we need to do something to get the color right these next few months. If nothing else, we at least need to slap some color on those roots!

So that’s exactly what Mama Brooch did:

You can see how happy I am to finally be doing something to my hair!

Hair Color Chronicles : wedding arlington hair Imag02801 IMAG02801

Ooh la la la…

Looks gross now, but just wait and see!

Hair Color Chronicles : wedding arlington hair Imag02803 IMAG02803

Uh oh.

Hair Color Chronicles : wedding arlington hair Imag02804 IMAG02804

It might not look like anything is wrong, but it turned out way too red for my liking!!

These are what they call “hot roots” in the biz!

Hair Color Chronicles : wedding arlington hair Imag029 IMAG029

MOOOOM!!

“Mom, what’s happened? This isn’t what I wanted. You never fail me! Why didn’t it turn out darker?”

“It’s way too red!”

She assured me with a few washes the roots would eventually fade, which they did.

She also promised to fix it. She said this is the reason we’re doing this now and not the night before the wedding. Sometimes hair colors are fickle and don’t turn out the way we imagine, and it may take a few tries to get the look you’re going for! It’s still not what I want, but it’s close. Oh, and at least the grey is gone (for now)!

This is the REAL look I’m going for:

Something darker with slightly red highlights and bronze undertones:

Are you trying to achieve a certain hair color for your wedding?

Grrrr for hot roots! She’ll be able to fix that no problem, just slap some darker neutral or cool toned color over it and hot roots be gone :)

I’m having a hard time deciding what color I want my hair for the wedding. I was a blond child and was blond up until college, when I got sick of having it done all the time, so now I’m a brunette (b/c my roots are dark the blond always had to be highlighted to keep it bright on top) now and I’m torn what color to dye it for the wedding. Big decision.

I have the exact same problem and I’m only 27! I love that color on you. My roots always come out a little lighter when I do mine than the main color. I thought it was because the grey roots don’t hold color than the longer strands that have been colored many many times? Any advice on this would be great since I will have to get mine done a week before our wedding.

I’m another 25-year-old cursed with grey hair. My best friend jokingly calls me Silver Fox, and one day he & I decided to dye the grey away.

It turned out jet black and horrifying. Also, it refused to fade. Total nightmare! You’re so lucky to have a stylist in the fam : )

I completely understand with the grey! I was 25 when I found my first one. I didn’t really color my hair until then, but it’s been going a couple shades darker ever since.

@ManciasToBe: Oh man! I’d love natural highlights! Hopefully your mom is wrong about the grey! @Mrs. Nachos: I hope so! She promised! @Mrs.Pollietobe: Aw, so good to know I’m not the only one! The color has definitely grown on me! @Miss Jam: LOL @SIlverFox! OK, that makes me feel A LOT better. Thanks Jammie :-)

It’s definately good to try things with your hair with plenty of time before the wedding. The color looks good, I’m sure your mom will get it perfect before your big day!

And I’ve had grey hair since I was 10. I’m serious! I got teased some about it, so my mom let me start coloring my hair in 5th grade. I’m 27 now and some of my girlfriends are stressing about get grey hairs, and I’m like, “welcome to my world!” hahaa! It was pretty traumatizing as a kid :(

I’ve had gray hair since I was 18, and now, at 22, I’m pretty much salt and pepper. I dye my hair too…but always the same color. I’m trying to fake the natural look :p

I also have gray hair!! And strangely, only at the top part of my head - so it’s super visible!! I’ve been changing some colors lately, also trying to find the right shade for the wedding, but it’s not easy… And it’s expensive (no family hairstylist for me!) and not good for my hair, so I’ll need to make up my mind soon!

I started getting gray hair when I was 16. What a bummer! Luckily, my hair was blonde (up until recently), and it was well-hidden. Now, I don’t know what to do with it because it requires so much upkeep to dye it. I wish I had a hairdresser in the family!

[...] I decided to phone my hairdresser for the day of the wedding and set up a hair trial. My mom (who I mentioned is a stylist) isn’t going to do my hair on our wedding day because it would be too stressful. We want her to [...]

That’s my natural color too!!! Dark dark brown with auburn highlights. Mom always brings me with her to a new hair colorist (or the hair dye aisle of Wal-Mart) to compare. And you’re mom is right!!! This is why you did a test run now :)

Good job growing your locks out! I’m starting to contemplate all this too. I’ve had two gray streaks since as long as I can remember, kids started noticing in 6th grade and my mom (a hairdresser too) let me start coloring it. I was always doing a dark red. I always get hot roots, and my color fades fast. I’ve started to go super dark and it’s amazing how much lighter it ends up. The only color that ever stayed was black that was supposed to be temporary wash-out stuff. I’ve been growing it out but it just seems poofy. Argh.

This is such a great post/chronicle of hair coloring adventures! I know exactly what you mean about things getting too red! How were you able to maintain the color you wanted?
