About Mrs. Lox

Up Up Up and Away!

January 4th, 2011 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Lox

So one Friday night, Mr. Lox and I went to our venue for dinner. This is entirely possible since our venue is one of our favorite restaurants, by the way. Anyway, the more I thought about wedding things, the more questions I had. And I was torn between looking like a crazy bride and wanting answers so I could calm down a bit. Mr. Lox took it into his own hands and sent the owner some questions, which we all discussed over dessert.

Some of the answers were very calming; some surprised me. More on that later. But one of the questions we asked was if there are any restrictions on what we can do to decorate. And the answer was…no. The owner immediately started talking about hanging things from the ceiling. The ceiling! I mean, the ceiling? Dear hive, I had never thought of this before. The ceiling of the restaurant is all exposed pipes, ducts, and beams, but painted a uniform eggplant color. Suddenly I was thinking of fabric, and paper-ball garland, and paper lanterns! This was a whole realm of things I had never considered!

So now I am obsessed with decorating the ceiling in our venue. I’ve been scouring the Internet for pictures of things like these:

These seem to be all paper lanterns, but I’m totally up for other ideas as well. So long as they don’t require an electrical outlet and can easily be done by my day of coordinator before the ceremony. So tell me, did you decorate the ceiling of your venue or will you? What will it look like?

I would love to hear ideas too! I recently took my mom to see our venue when it was decorated for Christmas and they had these beautiful large gold ornaments hanging from the ceiling. It looked amazing but don’t think ornaments will work for our October wedding. I couldn’t think of anything other than paper lanterns and I don’t think that would work either.

Hand made paper garland, paper pomanders, strings of battery operated lights, long, dramatic hurricane lanterns or other candle holders…oh, there are a million ways to spruce up a ceiling!

I have the same love for the ceiling decor. I don’t know if our venue allows it, but they just look so lovely in all those pictures! Sigh!

I love the ceiling decor also. To be honest I think it might have been the selling point for the venue. When I was searching online for a venue I saw the pictures of the laterns and fabric being hun from the pavillion and I fell in love with it.

I have seen paper laterns that were battery opperated if you really really want them but need an alternitive to the electrical ones.

I think we’re going to hang lights and string paper lanterns…. although I’ve seen some pretty adorable fabric banners that really make me swoon.

I would have loved to do that for my own wedding! I saw this venue with a friend while venue shopping for her and LOVED it (Georgetown Ballroom in Seattle):

ABSOLUTELY YES!! We had tissue-paper poms hanging from the ceiling. It was by far the biggest project of our wedding and by the end they were
“those [insert preferred expletive here] poofs”!

They were worth all the work, though! The results were amazing. They gave the whole room a really fun, colorful vibe. It was exactly the feeling I was going for.

I used honeycomb balls and disks to decorate the ceiling of a picnic gazebo for my wedding. LunaBazaar.com has some classy ones, but you can find plain ones cheaper elsewhere. Also, I used ring magnets instead of tape or tying string to attach them to the metal ceiling. My brother just threw the magnets up to get them to stick — no ladder needed.

I had intended on using paper (and fabric) lanterns and even started quite a collection. Ultimately, that idea was scraped when I realized we didn’t have the manpower to arrange them the day of and I didn’t have any idea where the tent poles would be in the tent as all the photos I saw were of a smaller tent. Ultimately, we had a few strands of round lights (the kind we could have put small paper lanterns on) that we asked the DJs to put up. It was completely random but better than nothing.
