About Mrs. Lox

Venue Adventures

January 5th, 2011 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Lox

Some people second guess their dress. Not me. I second guess my venue, or so it seems.

When Mr. Lox and I first got engaged and our favorite restaurant offered themselves up as an affordable venue for both ceremony and reception, we were thrilled. It was a no-brainer. We know the owner and trust him. We know the bartender. We know the chef. And we know the sommelier. It seemed perfect. We had an initial discussion with the owner about very high-level details and then cleared our date with him. He didn’t want a deposit or a contract because he said it’s bad luck. We trusted him, so it wasn’t a big deal. And done!

Of course, if that were the extent of this, it wouldn’t be a problem. But as time passed, our lack of contract started to freak me out. I felt like that plus the lack of details was becoming a giant problem. I started to panic. So we began to try to contact the owner to talk and ease my fear. He didn’t answer e-mails. He was never around to pick up the phone. Finally, we showed up there for dinner and he talked with us. I started to feel better.

That is, right up until we talked about the ceremony setup. That was the one piece that was not how I had envisioned it. The setup he outlined had no real aisle for me to walk down and a half-wall between the ceremony and our seated guests. I tried to be cool about it. I tried not to think about it. We moved on.

Now *this* is an aisle.

Then my day of coordinator asked for copies of all my contracts, and I had to explain the venue issue again. It bothered both of us, and she saw possible legal complications for her. Mr. Lox and I decided to go back to the owner and ask for a contract without a deposit if he didn’t want to take one. But in the meantime, I was getting more anxious about the ceremony and the entire thing. The owner was difficult to contact. The ceremony wasn’t what I wanted. I felt trapped.

And so it was that Mr. Lox and I hit the streets to compare our restaurant to other venues. And so it was that we found a place comparable in price but significantly farther away. And to be honest, Mr. Lox called them right away to set up an appointment for us to see the place and talk this over.

I felt guilty and bad for cheating on our venue. But I felt uneasy about it, and I wanted to at least investigate an option. I didn’t really know what was going to happen, but I needed to see it through. And since we didn’t have a contract to break at the time, I felt like I wasn’t doing anything too too wrong. Maybe.

Did you ever second guess one of your vendors or end up changing midstream? I’d love to hear your stories.

Oooh! Pick me! I did–food. We hadn’t signed a contract, I was on the fence but tired of searching, when my MIL admitted she hadn’t really liked the food at the tasting. So we went to investigate this one place on the recommendation of a friend, and instantly clicked with them. The uncertainty was gone and it felt WAY better.

@MsJeep23:
Same here. I hadn’t signed a contract with a caterer and felt very trapped by his wedding package that he pushed on me. Then, from the urging of a work acquaintance, set an appt w/her fave caterer. LOVED THIS ONE!! She understood what I wanted instantly & her vision fell inline with ours and the rest of the vendors! Best decision YET!

Go with you gut feeling and if this is not the place for you, try another place. You have to be for sure that this is what you want. Huge legally issues can come in to play with no contract. You should be happy on you wedding day, and you should be proud of the venue you choose.

I just switched photographers. I felt bad for breaking the contract but photos are just too important! Go with whatever makes you happy because they are no “do-overs” after your wedding.

I’m one answer away from switching our ceremony musicians. I don’t feel comfortable without a contract from the first one (the one that hasn’t responded in months) so I’m moving on.

If you do manage to work out the contract issue, perhaps you should simply move the ceremony to another place?
Still, if you feel uncertain or have doubts about the owner, it’s good that you are considering other options…

I haven’t swapped vendors yet but this month is a lot of details meetings AND I’m feeling extra stressed this month, so who knows what could happen.

@Miss Elephant: You’re still having trouble with that vendor? :(

I did and it was the venue…2 months before the wedding and NOT by choice! We are getting married in Jamaica and had decided to go with a venue where my grandpa had been doing business with the owner for 20 years. We booked the venue a year in advance and had been communicating with the owner over email. She seemed very accommodating and we had everything set. Then, 2 months away from the date she decided to up the price of the deal by $3500! My FH and I had a huge problem with this, so we sent my grandpa to talk to her. At their meeting, she told my grandpa that we were asking for too much (steak, downloading songs, a non white cake..) and that she no longer wanted to host our wedding! Needless to say, we scrambled to find another venue in Jamaica that was available for the weekend of our wedding. The hotel where we and all of our guests are staying ended up having an opening on Friday (the wedding was originally on Saturday), so we lucked out! It was super stressful for a couple of weeks, but now everything is ok. And in 29 days, we’ll be married!

[...] music! Fun! That was the extent of our consideration. But after we got home and before I started panicking about the venue, I started to have doubts. Would a jazz band be able to make people dance the night away? Would [...]
