Leaving Room for Flexibility

January 5th, 2011 @ 3:17 pm by Mrs. Lioness

A few months ago, I got a phone call from one of my bridesmaids. It went a little something like this:

Bmaid: Heyyy

Lioness: Hi! What’s up?

Bmaid: Ummm…

Lioness: (awkward pause)

Bmaid: siiiigh…

Lioness: Dude, is everything okay?

Bmaid: Welllll…

Lioness: WHAT’S WRONG? (at this point, I’m thinking that she’s about to tell me she can’t be in the wedding, she doesn’t want to be in the wedding for whatever reason, or something horrible happened)

Bmaid: (giggles) Are you sitting down?

Lioness: (feeling relieved and instantly knowing what’s coming next) Yes?

Bmaid:…I’m PREGNANT!

{lots and lots of squealing}

Lioness: Congratulations! Ohhhh I’m SO happy for you guys!

Bmaid: Oh good! You’re not mad. I’m really worried about my dress, and I was worried that you would be worried, too! I mean, I still plan to be there and everything, but what are we going to do about my dress?

Obviously, her dress was the last thing on my mind at that moment! But she did bring up an excellent point: what’s a bridesmaid to do? This particular bridesmaid had not yet ordered one of the dresses that we had decided on months before she learned this news. Allow me to remind you what those dresses looked like.

Oh, Sister Lioness. Never a dull moment.

Empire waist? Some forgiveness around the hips? Our first thought was that this dress would work with a baby bump…but then we did the math and figured out that my bmaid would be 8 months pregnant on our wedding day. Again, I asked her if she was sure she wanted to commit to standing up there next to me. She responded with things like “ARE YOU SERIOUS?” and “I’m just going to make him drive the whole way to Atlanta anyway.”

I started to look at maternity bridesmaids’ dresses. My first stop was Alfred Angelo; they make the dress that we had initially chosen, and I hoped I could find something in the same color. Lo and behold, I found this:

Is that similar or what? I was so glad this bridesmaid of mine decided to put off ordering her dress! She must have had a feeling. I called the store where we had ordered the other bridesmaids’ dresses from. I told them that one of my bridesmaids was pregnant, and they said, “Oh, so would you like to change her order to the 7002MA?” I was a bit surprised that they knew which exact style I had chosen, but she simply replied, “Well, it looks the most like the one you had initially chosen.” It’s always nice to have a salesgirl who knows her inventory!

I walked away from bridesmaids’ dress shopping having learned an important lesson: sometimes, it’s best to go with the larger, more popular designers. They’re large and popular for many reasons, and one of the main reasons is their variety. Granted, if I had chosen bridesmaid dresses from a small boutique, we would have been able to figure something out. But this switch was very easy and very inexpensive, and for that I was grateful. It’s definitely important to leave room for flexibility…especially if you have a bridesmaid who you know will make a wonderful mother some day!

What kinds of changes have you had to accommodate for during your wedding planning? Any major curve balls?

My MOH just found out she’s expecting and she’s due about six weeks before our wedding date. I haven’t mentioned it yet, but I’m worried about what size she’ll be and and what she’ll wear. I’m just thankful that we’re not doing matching dresses and hoping we can find something a few weeks before the big day!

That’s a perfect match, and it’s even one of the cuter maternity bm dresses I have seen. Is she your MOH? It would be perfect to have her in a different dress, anyway!

Oh wow, good for you and your adorable bridesmaid. How exciting and I’m so happy you could find a dress that looks so similar to others. And I agree…she must have had a feeling. ;)

I was worried when I told my sister I was pregnant. I am due about 7 weeks before her wedding, which we’re traveling from NY to FL to be in. The biggest thing with being post partum is the chest area. I went up 3 dress sizes just in the chest since getting pregnant (with a little room to spare in case I get even bigger when I start breastfeeding).
Thankfully my sister’s been awesome about it all and I can’t wait to take our first family vacation with our little one in tow.

This is a good story. I’m glad that you were able to find a solution and that she will still be able to be in the wedding. I just found out that one of the girls I wanted to ask to be a bridesmaid is pregnant too. Unfortunately her baby is due exactly 2 weeks before my wedding so she was unable to accept…. Ah well.

My sister just found out she is pregnant and is due the week after my wedding. She is my MOH, so while I understand the possibility of her not being able to be there… we are hoping for the best. I stood as her MOH and I’d be devestated if she couldn’t be mine. I’m super excited for her, this is her 3rd child and I love my niece and nephew so much already. That being said, they discontinued the color dress we have chosen and already paid the $70 deposit on, so I just said for her to get a dress in gray and call it a day. But when we went to pick out a style more suited for her 9 month pregnant belly, they said we could actually order the color until the end of Jan. Whew!

This is off-topic, but aw, Alfred Angelo. Two of my girls wore that green dress in wine. The sample was that exact dress and, before they came in, we always referred to it as “the green dress.”

I had the same phone call from a bridesmaid! (And I had the same reaction you did :) ). Luckily since we’re going the black dress route, she’s able to just buy something that works for her. But yay for a maternity dress in the same color and so close style wise!

it is better that she is due after your wedding than before. Sure she can’t drink but most new mothers don’t want to leave their newborn that early on.

2 weeks after my girls ordered their dresses my sister found out she was pregnant. She was VERY early in her pregnancy so we didn’t know how to go about it. I used David’s Bridal and they have been nothing but awesome about changing her dress. She will be about 6 months pregnant on my wedding day (April 2nd 2011) But there is no way to truly judge how large she will be which does worry me but I have a feeling these larger bridal stores deal with this often. :)

This exact thing just happened to me a week ago!!! But my BM is due two days after the wedding, so she’s decided to not risk driving out that weekend. But we had her dress ordered and arrived, she told the sales people she was possibly going to be pregnant (just was hoping to not be THAT far along come the wedding) and they told her to go up 10 dress sizes (a 6- a 16) well… she’s only 4 months along and already the dress fits well enough that there’s no way it would fit even in a few months.(and they won’t take the dress back or exchange) So you’re lucky that she held off on ordering, and can get a closer estimate! :) So exciting though!

I’ll have 2 expecting bridesmaids, one will be at 7 months and the the other at 8 months! Thankfully we already knew about the growing bellies when we ordered the dresses!

PS Love the dresses!

@Mrs. Taco: Yay! Good taste ;)

Ohhh I am so excited for baby bump pictures!
