Stand and Deliver

January 5th, 2011 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

As you might remember, we are not having cake at our wedding, we’re having pie instead! I happen to think that pies can be just as pretty as cakes with fancy icing, so I want to make sure they are displayed as best as they can be. I had decided to collect some mismatched cake stands, and have the pies on those. There has been one picture in my inspiration folder from the very beginning that got me on to this kick:

(from OnceWed)

We’ll have many more pies than in that photo though, so we’ll need many more stands. Yay! An excuse to go antiquing!

Sadly, my very favourite antique mall has shut down so I didn’t really know where else to go in town, so I put it off. I’ve managed to gather (and by I, I really mean Cinnamum) a few nice new ones that look vintage. But, for Christmas, Cinnamon Buns’ mum gave me these:

Is either one in wedding colours? No, but that is the whole point of mismatched, isn’t it?! Cinnamum-in-law found a weekend market/bazaar or something, one of those wonderful markets where most people are selling junk, but if you dig you can find something amazing. She found these! I gave them both a good soak in soapy water, and they came out sparkling. I love the stubby little feet on the yellow one:

It is great to have such a low one, because I think the pie table will look best with many different levels. I’m still wondering if I can work books in there too… I’ve toyed with the idea of a pie on a stack of books, but I’d be worried about them all tipping over. Maybe glueing or screwing or tying the books together would work to make a stand?

I still want to find somewhere to go and find a cakestand myself. I get that thrill-of-the-hunt thing and it feels really good to find a gem in a crowded little shop that is mostly full of junk. That I know I get from my mum, Cinnamum. She knows her antiques, and I’ve been towed around antique stores by her for as long as my dad has towed me around used bookstores. I don’t do it very much, because the condo Cinnamon Buns and I live in is pretty full already!

Do you like antiquing and the thrill of the hunt?

Those cakestands are awesome! If you choose not to go the dessert/pie table route, my girlfriend got married a few months ago and is a baker by trade; each centerpiece was a cake on a stand with then two or three blossom vases with a few daisies in each. Simple, easy, and the tables were named after the cakes…so we were pistachio, another was coconut. After they cut their own cake, all the guests ended up walking around scoring slices from the neighboring tables. I thought it was an awesome idea and one worth sharing.

(Although seriously the pie table is just as good, just putting out what I thought was a good idea to the universe!)

Also, YUM pie!

If you have a Home Goods near you, they have super cute cake stands all the time! There is a white one with a tiffany blue ribbon weaved around the edge that I love and have stared at over and over again!!

Love antiquing! I hit up our second hand stores looking for inspiration and things to incorporate into our decor.

If you can’t find cake stands that you like it is really simple to make. Here is a link to a blogger I like that has made many of her own.

We decided to do pies as well, and I’m planning on doing something similar. But I’m only going to display 3-6 pies, and the rest will stay with the caterer to be cut up, and so will the ones on display. But we’re having a fairly large wedding, and there won’t be room to display 15-20 pies.

You definitely could get a stack of larger books- old encyclopedias perhaps, and place a pie on top.

Don’t forget that you can also have sturdy boxes covered with table linens so that your pies can be all different heights.

here’s another inspiration:

Love the idea as books for pie stands… maybe some really cute vintage cook books.

@twitchee27: I’m honestly not sure what these cost… I’d feel guilty if they cost more than $25 each though! Not because of any particular dollar value, I just find it way too easy to feel guilty about being given stuff.

@Ms Cheetah: It sounds funny, but I hadn’t even thought of using cookbooks! That is an awesome idea!

I am doing something similar but with different types of cakes on small stands. Good luck on your search for them…it definitely isn’t easy! Hopefully you are able to find some near you if not I found an amazing online store…Sweet and Saucy Supply… AMAZING stuff!
