Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!
About Mrs. Pancakes

Now that we  finally have a date, I figure we should probably let people know. So what do you want to hear first, the good news or the bad news? The good news is that a good friend of mine has offered to help design and print all our invites for me. She was actually my roommate in college for a semester before she transferred to design school and is now a fabulous product designer.

The bad news is that I am SO indecisive.

The first step is to find inspiration, but there are A LOT of options out there. One of my major problems is that I like things that don’t even make sense for our wedding. When I see any idea that is particularly unique I have a hard time letting it go. I want to believe I can incorporate everything into ourwedding.

After hours and hours and HOURS of searching I finally realized that the elements I like seem to fall into three general categories:

Calendars:

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Saveth

{Available here on Etsy}

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Vintage

{The Wedding Chicks}

Destination

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Two two

{Minted}

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Cr Lugg

{Source}

Floral

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Three

{Minted}

PSA: There Are Lots of STDs out There : wedding costa rica save the dates Four Four

{Minted}

This leads me to two questions: (1) How would I go about combining my favorite elements of these save the dates? (2) How coherent do your save the dates and invites have to be? Could the STDs just be the more whimsical, fun version of the invites? I would want to keep the same colors, fonts, and general feel but have the STDs be less elegant. So, perhaps we would do a destination themed calendar for the save the dates and then tie in some of the destination feel to a more floral invitation suite. Thoughts?

Did you design/pick your STDs and invites at the same time or were they two totally separate decisions?

I say do whatever you want. My STDs aren’t even close to reflecting our wedding theme, and certainly don’t have anything to do with how our invitations will look. Maybe that’s a mistake, but we just thought of an idea and ran with it! Oopsies :)

That second destination inspiration is awesome! To answer your question, my stds are totally unrelated to my invite idea and I’m thinking, whatevs dude, so long as they’re both cute, don’t care!

I agree with Miss Oatmeal (Oatie?). Our STDs really don’t have anything to do with the rest of the wedding. There is some blue and green, but really it’s just a big photo of us, which is enough to tie it in I think. :)
I think STDs are somewhere were you can be way more whimsical, and maybe use something that you love but doesn’t necessarily go with the rest of everything.

My opinion would be if you were going super black tie formal for the wedding you may want the save the dates to reflect that.

BUT since you are going whimsical destination costa rica fun - do whatcha want! Pura Vida :)

Looking at your options the ‘destination’ themed save the dates popped out as perfect for your destination wedding. How fun could you make those!

What about a calander with a pic of you holding flowers native to Costa Rica and future hubby holding a sign that says Save the Date! Deistination, floral and calander rolled into one!

Oooh, or what about a picture of you two holding a vintage Costa Rica travel poster?? I love those things. That doesn’t have anything to do with calendars or flowers, buuuut….. it sounds cute :)

our invitations and STDs are way different. We picked our invitations while still undecided about STDs in general. We then doubled-back and decided to sneak in some STDs. Simply stated, our invitations are formal and official, while our STDs are much more casual, relaxed, and fun. Good luck!

Yes I see what you mean, all of your inspiration is very different from one other! I don’t think the STD and the invites need to necessarily be the same, but it is nice it they follow the same idea or theme! We picked our STDs before choosing a theme and colors and invites, but luckily they still fit in quite well!

I made our STDs more casual and fun, just did a photo card with san serif fonts and our invites have a way more fancy feel. You don’t have to stick with one style. To incorporate the two I am doing a combo of the 2 styles of fonts on the RSVP. Just stick with the same colors and go with what you are drawn to. Love the calendar!
